kde
We are looking to hide our electronics in a closet, yet still be able to operate them via remote. Any recommendations on a good infared remote, or should I just head down to best buy and pick up whatever they have? Can I still use my remote and just pick up an infared signal? Johnny dB
You won't be able to use an infared remote unless you leave the closet door open or you relocate the infared receiver part. I'm sure someone makes a kit to do that. I rented a beach house that had a home theater room and all the components were locked away but there was a little infared receiver that was behind the screen and a universal remote to control everything. Maybe someone makes a universal RF remote you can use.
dougdrake
You'd need an RF (radio frequency) remote to operate them in a closet/cabinet, or an IR repeater which will pick up your IR signal in your room and then "blast" it inside the cabinet. There are lots of those around. A good place to look for information is www.smarthome.com. Not sure I'd buy there, though, as they're a little pricey. For other info, check out www.remotecentral.com or www.avsforum.com.
Malcolm
I have a simple Xantech IR system. The receiver is small enough to be unobtrusive. A three wire cable runs from it through the walls and attic to a connecting block in the closet. The connecting block has four IR emitters connected. Two emitters control all the equipment on each of two shelves. Total cost was around $100 a few years back. Ofcourse, you can get much fancier, and pricier. Xantech You'll have to do the searching to find the best price now. Also, there are other companies with equivalent gear.
picky
One of the cheapest, easiest and quickest IR repeating systems I've seen is Powermids. They've been around for years and several places sell them including Rat Shack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2104477&cp http://www.x10.com/products/x10_pm5900.htm They're a piece of cake to set up and use and a lot cheaper than my Niles System. j-malotky
IR repeaters are easy to set up. When I built my HTPC, I put in an RF remote to control everything since radio waves do not have to have line of sight. Works great. mbajner
I have the RS pyramid shaped IR repeater and it works very well there is a socket on the back of the receiver that I plugged in IR extension cable to my equipment the cable is split and has two lights on it did not buy this cable from RS it came with my Mits RPTV and never used it with the RPTV itself so it was just laying around and thought I would give it a try glad it worked
