Bring Corns Back Up?

Jeff Matthews

Recommended Posts

Sorry, not clear. I have the "drum room" upstairs where I play drums to my favorite rock tunes. This is why I got a serious stereo set-up. I recently bought KHorns. Now, I have KHorns and Corns. I can bring the Corns downstairs and use them for TV - and pretty much TV only (so movies is about al they'd be good for). Or I can use them upstairs and run my stereo with both KHorns and Corns.

Drums will not be coming downstairs in TV room.

the Khorns should be loud enough to play drums with, what other speakers are you using in the TV setup? I'd keep the Cornwalls downstairs as the main part of a music/HT setup. You can fill in with anything for now, but eventually aim to get more CW's or Heresies for rears.

Michael, please read my "Bringing the Corns Down" thread and give me some more advice. What gets me is that for 20 years, I've shaken the roof with just my Corns. It's sad to see them "wasted" on a TV. KHorns are definitely plenty for drumming. So are Corns. Is your vote still to keep them on TV? Seems like such overkill for such fine speakers. I'll say I would like to have them for good action movies with explosions, etc., but the use would be limited to just about that. What more to say?

Ah, welcome to my world. Having multiple systems is always confusing. I have four in the house now.

Sounds like you need two receivers and not that monster amp. What are you using for preamp for drum room now? You need some power, maybe 150-200 watts depending on how loud you like your playback for drumming. Khorns are the most efficient speaker in the lineup, so I would keep them where you need it loud. But a simple receiver or smaller power amp should suffice instead of that MicroTech. (and yes, I'll buy it)

If you ever want to go HT properly now would be the time. CW's are fantastic for Movies, I love the full range sound, for now you can get by without a sub, since you're not used to it anyway. But you should have a 100W x 5 minimum receiver for your starter HT. Yamaha 657 or similar is a new one that is feature loaded (PM BillH who just bought one)

Michael, my buddy! You slightly misunderstood. Nobody gets my Crown over my dead body. I saw you mentioned having a Crown earlier, so I was kidding that you might want to sell me yours, so I'd have 1 for up and 1 for down.

Tell me more about that Yamaha 657. What should I expect to pay for a good used one?

My pre-amp is Yamaha C-80. It was born for my Crown, and there, it will stay.

Thanks for your input. You're getting me on track.

Thats a brand new Yammie unit. Check BillH threads on it or PM him. He'd be glad to give you the run down.

Sorry about the misunderstanding on the 1200, I thought you wanted me to have a matched set. Isn't that overkill with the Khorns though? I really need it to biamp my double stack of industrial split LaScalas! bwhahahahahaa

Actually, it is overkill. But it's what I have, so hey, why dump it? I do wonder what speakers handle what the 1200 can really deliver. It's be nice to hear something that can take more than half. My KHorns might take half on a "soft-spoken" tune - or just a drum solo like in Santana's "Soul Sacrifice."

Will set up a post for BillH, so others can chime in if they're familiar. Thanks.

yeah, I have the LP to Moonflower, but everyone kept talking about it, so I broke down and got the CD this week. Awesome, simply awesome piece of music.

Michael, are you sure we're not related? That is one of the CD's that would be my choice if I was marooned on a deserted island and could only bring 10 CD's. It is definitely an awesome piece of music. Almost brings tears [:(] to think how that must have sounded to those who were there in concert (at least most of it was in concert). It is a CD that almost nobody knows about, and they really, really don't know what they're missing. Sounds fabulous through Klipsch at high volume. Enough raving, but I love this 2 CD Set.....

Michael

A double Stack of split LaScalas powered by a pair of Crown Microtech 1200's....

I am thinking it won't be long before the Airport is complaining about the noise!!![:D]

I agree with the K'Horns up and Corns down theory, BTW...

how does having the stacked bass bins sound? is it good for critical listening, or is the extreme height a major disadvantage for anything other than just blasting music? i ask beacuse it may be a fun project to create a second bass bin for the scalas when i have some more free time (and money).

well.. atleast i could get rid of my 6" risers

edit: and stacking my scalas ontop of another bass bin would look quite intimidating in this 11x11 room

sounds... LOUD... It's just imposing looking and it's the way we always did it at Calliope Sound, where I worked PA as a young lad. The neat thing about stacking the splits like that is that you get the mid/hi's working in tandem and at the critical 4-6 foot height. Cut's their heads clean off!

It does got the resistence quite low, so you've got to have an amp that will take it. Crown power never complained about the load..

Being a percussionist myself...I would use the Cornwalls as monitors w/ the drumz

....and use the KHorns downstairs w/ the movies.

The fidelity of the KHorns is perfect for movies and the Cornwalls could be placed

closer to the drumz , like stage monitors.

What's your decision ?

**Try my suggestion and see if it makes sense while your playing the drumz w/ your fav jams ! **

~ Happy wood-shedin' to you !

Born2Rock, I've used those Cornwalls w/drums for 20 years. Never a disappointment. I even had to refrain from turning stereo up too high. They out-do live drums.

No way will I use KHorns for TV! If stereo was in same place as TV - yes way. But KHorns need to be where the jams are. Sometimes when not playing drums, I like to put on something like YYZ, old Genesis, Chicago and just crank the snot out it and smile. [:)]
