This gave me my first view of Sony's aggressive stance toward any type of digital replication of media, their IP or not. They put all sorts of limitations on what you can copy, how many times you copy it and in what direction you copy (PC to device only) But, this latest fiasco of Sony has convinced me that I will never buy any of their major products again, and will only purchase their media products if there is absolutely no other option. Sony needs to be taught a lesson. Boycott their products. I, for one, will NEVER buy another Sony product. (I don't do Micro$oft either). In thier effort to "protect" thier content, they are only going to make the problem worst with this kind of crap. Think about it. I figure I'd do the "right thing" by buying the CD. The CD is generally better quality than compressed audio files downloaded off the 'net, plus I like having the lyrics and liner notes and so forth. Now, why, after spending my money on the CD, should I have to put up with that kind of crap, when I could've just downloaded the tracks off the 'net, for nothing, and without being hobbled by DRM crap? That copy protection does absolutly nothing to actually "protect" that content, and only punishes those that are being honost and buying the music legitimatly. I've did a quick search, and I found every single one of those "protected" albums on the P2P services. Way to go Sony! What a nice way to say "thank you" to those that bought the album when they could've just downloaded the tracks! I personally did not buy any of those albums myself, simply because I was not interested in any of the artists and/or music that was on those. After reading all this, even if I was interested, I'd would not buy them anyway, and instead, just to give Sony the big finger, I'd probably go and get it from a site such as allofmp3.com! For example, Van Zant's Get Right with the Man (one of the "protected" albums, no less), is available on there for a wopping $1.13 in 192kbps MP3 format! One of the guys at work has that Van Zant album, and he was pissing and moaning about not beeing able to put it on his PC (he is one of those that likes to rip all thier music onto thier PC). I went and showed him all this stuff about the Sony copy protection. He was Furious (with a capital F) when he found out what it did to his machine! He even told me he was starting to get errors from his DVD play-back software. I told him that it could very well be related to this XCP crap. I went and showed him this article (yes, that is the famous blog article that started the whole thing) which goes into nice technical detail as well as how to get rid of it. I agree with the general sentiment (and it there was a quote along this line, but I forgot who said it - it was in one of the congressial sub-committees) that it is "Yes, it may be Sony's intellectual property, but it is my computer". They may have a right to protect what is thiers, but they have no right to put crap on there without my consent (and there is nothing in the EULA that even mentions it, only a bunch of restrictions). Especially something that could leave my PC open to vulnerabilties (and thus leaving what is essentialy my own "intellectual property" unprotected), as well as damaging it and my data contained therein. I've already seen/heard about some horror stories about people having to pay a couple hundred dollars to get thier machines straighted out because of this. Fortuantly, I am enough of an expert with these things that I could repair it myself if something like this happens. I'll be more than happy to repair anybody else's machine within the local area that got infected by this crap without charge. None of that music is important enough to me to have to open myself and my computer to this kind of crap. As a result, I will never, ever buy any DRM'd disks, Sony, or otherwise! Maybe the artists will become a little more proactive. If not @#$% 'em. I'll take it one step further, not only will I not buy any Sony CDs for the forseeable future, I will also not buy ANY Sony products, or any CDs for that matter, these Corporations can Die for all I care. I mean, it's bad enough that they can sue its own customers and get away with it. And now they want to take over our computers as well? And we just lay down and take it. If there is a CD I really have to have, I'll buy it used, I'm not giving the record companies a nickel. Yes, I am sorry that the artists had to get caught in the middle of the crossfire of this whole thing, but like Todd just above me said: "Hopefully this will make the artists more proactive! If not? f' em!" Like I already said above, none of this music is important enough to me for me to have to put up with this kind of crap anyway. It is also very unlikely that I'll buy anything Sony again myself, which is a shame, as I was really getting interested in the Play Station 3. But than again, after reading the kind of obnoxious crap they plan on for DRM schemes for the BluRay high-def DVD format, I am seriously reconsidering my stance on that as well. The HD-DVD format is looking better and better. I won't go so far as to never buy another CD period, as I don't mind supporting the smaller, independent labels, such as Nightmare Records, who has much of the music I am interested in, plus I've met the owner, who is a really awesome guy. If we look at this from the standpoint of "hard lesson learned" on the part of Sony I would say they hit a major PR nightmare they will not want to repeat. From that standpoint I think they will think hard about any technoligy they try to introduce in the future. In this respect Sony may be the safest place to buy from for some time to come. They don't want another PR blunder. We know what to look for in the Sony XPC series of CD's that were released should we fine one at Walmart for $0.99. If the CD say's it has copy protection then don't buy it. If buying online look for the XPC or copy protection in the description. If we buy one then return it. Sony has recalled all XPC CD's and you will be able to obtain non-XPC versions. From my standpoint it seems that is Sony did it again there would no longer be a Sony label. The best advice I've heard is buy their printers install their driver off their disc, then don't ever update it-- Any updates include invasive programs designed to monitor your use of the printer--but what else could they monitor? I pointed out to my girl fiend that there is spy ware on them there things, and the Media guy said they pulled all the infected CDs out of there a few days ago, because of a lawsuit. grog Posted December 5, 2005 Share Posted December 5, 2005 I think there are some artist who have good contracts with Sony and I would hate to see them hurt by this Sony PR thing. I know most of the labels are bad in the way they treat artists but I also know some of the Sony artists do great things for their fans. Take UK artist Adam Ant for example. There is a great deal of great music that was released by Adam Ant. The Remaster BoxSet with Redux was released this year with only 5,000 copies made. You think I would pass that up because some stupid Sony exec decided to put XPC on a few CD's. Sony was involved with working out the released on the Redux set but guess what, the actual label for the CD's is Columbia! I know, I got the boxset for my wife on her birthday a few weeks back. But since Adam Ant is tied to Sony under contract why should he suffer because some group at Sony thought they could get away with this PR nightmare? Sony has suffered great about of loss in the terms of money and the loss of a good number of customers. Still I would rather see the team who thought this was a good idea at Sony working at McDonnald's. There are a lot of other companies do handle copy protection worse than Sony. I remember when I bought a Disney Sound System for my daughter so she could play some of the Disney educational games. They sent a hard to read sheet with the system and you have to match the characters on the sheet with what was on the screen to unlock the program each time you used it. Nothing about the protection method on the box. This was over 10 years ago but still the case is true. We don't get a lot of permission for what is installed on our computer and that is wrong.... but it is real world. We just become educated on what we will allow and what we will not for items we have a choice to put on our systems. Even with the Sony protected CD with XPC technoligy there was a warning on the CD and every site I have seen those CD's also had a warning. So back then... just don't buy those CD's!
