justin_tx_16
BOSE has a suspension system coming out in the next few years, sounds freaking awesome but... who knows. http://www.automobilemag.com/news/0410_bose/ Check it out, sorry if it has been posted already... DrWho
They've been doing suspensions for quite some time now actually. I wouldn't be surprised if Bose tried to claim they invented the concept. I know they tried to patent the idea of an electronic stabilizer system, but got shot down by the many companies already implementing it. Duke Spinner
i woder if they will offer a re-foam, after 15 years ....
Daddy Dee
I had no idea Dr. Bose was interested in building automotive suspensions.
picky
As others here have said, active suspensions are nothing new......just Bose' name being associated with them is new. Back in 1989, I was a suspension designer at General Motors and we were working on a cloak-and-dagger (skunk-works) project out in the garage at GM's Milford Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan. We had an experimental, "King-of-the-hill" Corvette outfitted with a full active suspension system. The thing was a monstrosity of cables, hoses and tubes and it all was run from a laptop that sat upon the passenger seat. I'd had several rides in the car around the track, and I can tell you that the car's performance at that time was amazing. However, due to the cost of manufacture, packaging problems, leaks and the "almighty" price point issues, the project was canceled in the early 1990s because during that day it was not feasible to manufacture a car with such an elaborate suspension system that would be reliable and still remain affordable. I imagine with the advent of today's newer technology, this pet project has again surfaced, more because of improvements in reliability, cost and packaging (due to nano-technology) and less due to the fact the Bose now has their big, fat name plastered all over it. But, I'm sure Bose will be there to take all of the credit. After all, that's what their good at.
efzauner
This is surely going to be amazing. They do make the best speakers in the world, the article says so, right? Just imagine all those top notch engineers now putting their talents towards the auto industry. I just can't wait to get my hands on one. It does make incredible sense, the similarity between speakers and active suspension is incredible. Both are basically electromagnets, and the DSP control circuitry is the same. Hey maybe they will even use the same paper mache! It does a super job in speakers to dampen cone resonances, I assume it will do the same to dampen suspension. That's how they can get rid of shock absorbers!
michael hurd
I wonder what the shock life is going to be like with that ferro-fluid in there.... probably pretty short.
kenratboy
I heard the big problem is it is heavy as hell. With the issues of fuel economy, nothing heavy will be tolerated on a modern car, probably not even a luxury car.
