Read article the other day where MS is being sued by class action since these new machines overheat and then lock up.....

It was on yahoo news somewhere.....

If true it seems maybe they rushed to market a bit too soon....IMO

Anyone actually have one of these? How is it? Just curious!

I got one and I really like it a lot. I only use it for games so I

don't stream MP3's or watch DVDs on it. I play Call of Duty 2, 720P to

my HDTV and it looks great. I love the online multiplayer games too.

Some unit have been having problems, hang-ups, heating up, etc. but I

have never had the problem...so far. The unit and especially the power

supply is really heavy compared to a PS2. Weight comparison is to like

a big notebook (Dell XPS M170). Wireless controller design is superb

and doesn't feel cheap. Overall, great unit IMO.

I also have one, and I love it. The graphics are amazing, and the

games are good. The xbox live marketplace is cool because you can

download game demos, and high definition movei trailers. I am running

digital audio to my reciever so the sound is great too. Probably my

favorite feature is being able to stream mp3's off my pc and listen on

them on my rf35's. I have the 2.1 computer speakers but with as much

music as I have it's great to hear it on my 35's.

don't get me wrong there are things I dislike, but I have had no overheating issues, and I am overall happy with the system.

I LOVE mine. Call of Duty 2 is awesome, looks and runs better than the PC version.

The dashboard interface is super-slick, and the media center

functionality is awesome, except for the lack of xvid and divx codecs

(may support in future).

You can stream music, movies, pictues, etc...hit the big x button on

the controller to access the dashboard at any time or play any music on

your network in game...awesome.

Couple that with great XBOX live arcade games for cheap (smash TV,

geometry wars evolved), backward compatibility (still been playing Halo

2 online) and the best controller ever, and I've been glued to it for

days.

And yes, the first run of systems had problems....it's funny that no

one remembers all the problems PS2 had at the time of launch ( I worked

at babbage's at the time). The average system failure at launch

for any console ever is 3-5%...Microsoft is well below this threshold,

around the same as the PS2, Gamecube, or Xbox 1 launch.

As for the PS3, I'll buy one if they make a God of War sequel or Shadow

of the Colossus sequel, but I guarantee it'll have the same sort of

problems at launch (the PSP was a nightmare, sony is not known for

their quality)...there is a class action lawsuit against them right now

that actually holds water...disc read errors on consoles sold up to 3

years after their launch...ahem. The microsoft lawsuit was thrown

out of court BTW. Add to that the fact that lately Sony's

strategy has been to plany rootkits on their consumers devices and

computers, and I'll say no thanks until they prove that it's worth the

$500 price tag it's likely to carry.

What I don't understand, is the shortage of units. MS had to know about the demand for this unit. The same thing happened with xb1 and ps2. If you weren't in line hours before the launch, you couldn't get one for months. Do they do this on purpose, or are they really that inept at meeting demand? Its just annoying.....

Well, it's not exactly on purpose...

Think about it. The final hardware structure for the 360 until

about August (the betas were shown at E3, but those weren't

final). So they had from August to November to get as many as

they could produced and distributed (not a lot of time at all).

This is compounded when you consider that this is a completely new

custom chip...there are ALWAYS manufacturing issues with new chip dyes,

and they process is constantly refined over the first few months to

reduce/eliminate dud chips coming off the line (the dud factor is

always high at the beginning of manufacturing of a new chip).

Compound that with a worldwide launch (never been done before) and you have your shortage explained.

My brother-in-law is an area manager for gamestop, and he exchanged his

first run console. First one manufactured in August, new ones in

November.

So, despite speculation, I doubt the shortages were purposeful or

manufactured (even though I originally thought they were until I did

some reading).

This is I guess the main reason why you have those overheating, game

freeze, and other problems some users are encountering with the unit.

As a matter of fact, Microsoft already had support articles in their

website prior to launching the unit.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;907588

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;907586

Also, ever wondered why the unit came with a microsoft offer for a 2

year extended warranty? Makes me really ponder. But all is well for me

until I get any of those problems so I'm knocking on wood. I would most

likely get the extended warranty too before the 90 day basic warranty

is over.

Don't have mine yet. Just couldn't see standing in line all night. Every time I check the stores around here, they still have not seen any new shipments since the original launch shipment.

However, the good news is, I hear Japan got theirs. <--insert sarcasm

I understand Microsoft wants to compete with Sony, that's great, but if I'm not mistaken PS3 is not due for months right? That being the case, why didn't microsoft give the states at least another month of supply before supplying Japan and other countries.

I am glad that I did get one from the second shipment! [;)]

Yeah, I'm excited for the PS3 as well, I'd like to see some more

details on the machine and some 'real' graphics. Sony's E3 booth

was all smoke and mirrors.

I'll probably get it when there's a game I can't pass up. After

all, right now, I have a Gamecube, PS2, XBOX, and XBOX 360 hooked up to

my rig...[:$]. (And a Dreamcast in the other room).

I agree that PC is usually the place to go for performance, but with

the architecture of the new consoles, the consoles will be besting even

High End PC's for a few years to come. The architecture is so

much more tuned toward games, and you don't have to worry about an OS

getting in your way.

I used to PC game quite a bit, but got tired of it becoming a money

pit. Console titles improve with leaps and bounds over the life

of the console, because developers can actually learn the hardware and

optimize for it, unlike PC which is constantly changing..hence the

ridiculous system requirements for games like Half Life 2 and Doom

3. The developers have to develop for the least common

denominator with PC, so those $600 graphics cards never even come close

to being truly utilized.

It is true though, that toward the end of a console's lifespan, PC's

are ahead in terms of graphics. This is the advantage PC's have,

of being upgradable.

And yes, Sony does have some good franchises. I'll be forced to

buy one when they release the God of War sequel...what a great

game. And the GT games are great if you have a wheel. Lots

of fun. Hopefully they get the online thing right this time

around.

Only thing I can say bad about this unit is THE DRIVE IS SO NOISY when playing a game!!!! Geezzeee, the loud "whirring" sound is starting to annoy me.
