jwc
Was wondering if it is better to have more ports or go with fewer/shorter ports in a particular cabinet. Trying to choose between 2,3 or 4 ports as a principle. In the diagram, there is two ports 4 inches diameter that are 3 inches long. The other one is "tuned" the same but is four ports that are 3 inches diameter that are 4.5 inches long. Could go with 3 ports 3 inches in diameter that are 2.75 inches long (not shown). The numbers in the diagram show length of ports What do you think? The motorboard has just enough room to accomidate any configuration. Duke Spinner
personally, I'd go for the 2 bigger ports the determining factor, tho .. is the "mach", or speed of air in the port my Valencia's when driven waaay hard, do have a little port noise
hwatkins
As mentioned above - the physics doesn't care about the number of ports as long as the escaping air adds little to no extraneous sounds. You will hear arguments otherwise, but my personal experience is that as long as you design to limit port noise there is no difference in sound. I prefer fewer ports because it usually makes it easier working with the baffle and provides a cleaner look IMO.

Daddy Dee
Well, I think the four ports drawing looks very cool.
intotubes
I prefer the look of the 2 port design. To each his own tho.
Marvel
jwc, I think that from a technical point, the baffle will be stronger with the two port design. Could be my imagination though. Two would certainly be easier to work with as has been mentioned. Bruce
jwc
Thanks again for the input. I prefer the two port design as well but I was worried about any compromise with "short" ports. If there is none, than 2 it is.
Duke Spinner
the volume/ weight of air in the port remains the same, no ..??? i like'um stacked on the side, like the jbl 4430 .....[]
D-MAN
When in doubt, choose the larger diameter tubes - they result in less noise. The minimum values of port "acreage" was put forth by Small of Thiele/Small fame although I haven't got it in front of me right now. But to rephrase, in general, the larger the port, the more velocity it can handle before "chuffing". DM
