Foost
Does anyone know why the new reference floorstandings weigh a substantial amount less than the KLF series they replaced? It's a 10 to 14 pound difference at the two levels. Why is this?
Mighty Favog
Well....uh, the KLF horns are also made of resins. I don't think the factory could have cross threaded one of my midranges that easily if they were metal. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. TheEAR
Most of the weight was in the larger cabinets. The newer drivers are also lighter(RF-3,RF-5).The RF-7 drivers are not much lighter then the KLF30 drivers(anyone with exact specs here?). The KLF tower series speakers are simply larger,if some want to feel better they can always add balast to the RF line. Guest BobG
The RF-5 and RF-7 use better cabinet construction than the KLF series but are made from the same basic material, double veneered MDF. The Front panel of the new models is a more dense MDF sometimes called double refined MDF. There is one less driver in the RF's versus the KLF's and the cabinets are quite a bit smaller if you'll check the dimensions. That is the single greatest factor in the weight difference. The horns in all of these models are injection molded of the same material. Klipsch had problems with Legend models that were treated roughly in shipping. The very heavy midrange driver could be pulled completely off the threaded mounting to the horn, or as in the case mentioned above, merely appear to have been installed cross-threaded. The new models use an attachment method which eliminates the problem.
