artto
Sometimes its fun to admit your ignorance and I guess for me this one of them. Were any of the earlier Klipschorns (1950's) factory built with an enclosed back on the bass horn such as this one? http://cgi.ebay.com/Klipschorn-Klipsch-Shorthorn-Vintage-Speaker-System_W0QQitemZ5863164473QQcategoryZ50597QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
D-MAN
Boy, you got me! However, it looks real nice - great execution - why haven't we seen one of these before? DM
CaptnBob
I don't think so - those backs look "aftermarket" to me - like those level controls on the tweeter and midrange. A lot of people added backs like that so the speaker could be freestanding, sort of, but I really doubt they left Arkansas that way. It looks like the top plate on the Shorthorn had some surgery too. I've surmised PWK left those off his corner horns - most horns of the period from the Aristocrats on up have them - because they didn't add anything to the performance and kicked up the construction and shipping costs. D-MAN
I could see a "special order" for a church or something - back then it would be mono, of course, so only one and not a pair. That thing looks as good from behind as it does from the front! Clearly meant as a free-standing single unit in a relatively "classy" environment. Definitely NOT a hack-job, that's for sure. But as to being a factory original, who knows? DM
Gilbert
Ooooooweeee! Just one day to go, and the bid is way up there. Almost $50, whoa! That was certainly interesting to see though. Apparently, with factory installed false corners. Custom Order???
JBryan
Just an aside...These big green controls look exactly like the ones that came with a pair of 1957 Pioneer coaxial drivers (PAX-12) right down to the white zip cord.
khorn51
Not factory and kinda a hack job side grill are missing. I thoght the added control might be Jensen. In 59 Klipsch had a stereo guide that showing a short horn add to a khorn sytem for a stero a stereo pair.
Soundthought
Hmmm. I have a pair of vintage Pioneer coax and those are definately what the tweeter controls looks like. Exactly. Guts look pretty stock, otherwise. K-5 horn w/ University SAHF. WE 500-5000 network. Regards, John.
