Extension cable for headphones

I've got one of those coiled extension cables to use with my headphones. But I absolutely hate the "coiled" wire. If I took the jack and plug apart could I attach them to some speaker cable? I assume it's just a matter of soldering two connections on each end? Is there any reason this would not work?

It will work just fine.

For years I had the TV and stereo on the other side of the room and used a non-coiled wire extension to get it over to the sofa. It may have been a Radio Shack product. In any case, it is just wire and nothing high tech.

BTW, I took apart what was considered a good set of stereo headphones in its day. Koss Pro-4-A's. The drivers turned out to be just little old Japanese radio speakers. So there was nothing high tech there either.

I think the coiled wire thing was a product of Western Electric. The Model 500 boxy dial telephone was the first to have it.
