Mr Tech Posted April 3, 2006 Share Posted April 3, 2006 Over the weekend I installed the new crossovers that Al K just built for me. WOW !!! What a difference! I got the AP12-AK3 & the ES5800 crossovers. I did one khorn at a time and did an AB (left / right) comparison after the first one was installed. I have to say I'm very impressed & pleased with the results. I thought my khorns already sounded great before the crossover upgrade, but I couldn't believe how much better they could sound. The bass response was much improved, so much so that I could turn my subwoofer off. The entire sound was much "tighter", cleaner & precise. I am currently using all original drivers. Thanks Al, great job! I am waiting for my Trachorns to arrive any day now. I will be installing them along with JBL 2404 tweeters. I'll post my impressions of that upgrade soon. Mr Tech Posted April 3, 2006 Author Share Posted April 3, 2006 Currently I'm using an average Sony receiver in my Home Theater set-up. I listen to a fairly broad range of music. Mostly comtempory jazz, some classical & some rock. I listen to it as loud as my wife will tolerate it. As you may already know the AP12-AK3 network replaces the original AK-3 with the exception of keeping the lower bass bin section of it intact. Al Klappenberger Posted April 3, 2006 Share Posted April 3, 2006 Wade, I'm a bit surprised to hear you say there is a difference in the bass. That netwrok uses the original woofer filter of the AK-3. The only difference could be that your amp now see a constant 6 Ohms rather then a rising impedance as you go up. If you are using a small amp, like a SET, you would probably hear a difference. I wouldn't think a it would matter much to a big SS rock-crusher. Anyhow, the AP12-AK3 is the simpelest network I make. It could be described as a stepping stone to the ES400T. It is literally half the AP12-350 which uses the same part values in the woofer filter as the Klipsch AK-3. That's how it can utilize what's already inside the AK-3 bass hatch. AL K.
