thebes
Hope everybody has some money left over after paying taxes to buy a cd or two. First a personal note. I want to thank the steady handful of weekly contributors for continuing with this effort in spite of lagging participation. Quick frankly, I feel that I am to blame. Aside from starting the thread I seldom participate in the discusson that some recommendtions provoke and I have been very lazy in reminding our other members that this thread exists. The latter, is very important for something as ethereal as a BB where attention spans tend to be short. I do aim to take steps to correct this, so please be patient. I also have a couple of additional ideas in mind to expand participation. Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp etc.) As usual I'll start it off with: John Coltrane, "Legacy", jazz, cd This is a four cd box set from Impulse. Coltrane is considerd to be one of the major gods of jazz and certainly, even, today is recognized as one of, if not the, best sax players ever. The way they have broken otu his recordings on this cd is also interesting: Disk 1: Harmonic and Melodic Disk 2: Rythmic Disk 3: Elvin and Trane Disk 4: Live There are upteen billion Coltrane releases, re-releases, re-issues etc. and it can all be very confusing. Buy this set instead and sit back and enjoy. Very well recorded and mastered. So what do you have to share this week?
grog
Inside Roxy Music 1972-1974 # DVD Release Date: March 1, 2005 Roxy Music hit the ground running with four amazing albums which were recorded and released in just two years. This is the long awaited critical guide to the formative years of this legendary band. Featuring rare archive footage of the band in performance alongside the views of leading critics, working musicians and admirers this is the independent view of Roxy Music from the quirky first recordings with Bryan Eno to the effortless cool of Country Life. Key performances of material from each album in turn is revisited and reviewed by a team of leading music critics, to discover the secrets of the music which defined the art rock movement. This is one of the most interesting documentaries I have ever heard. This is one you will want to watch several times. The best work of Roxy Music still has to be the live concert at the Apollo in 2002. Roxy Music - Live at the Apollo (2002) # DVD Release Date: July 8, 2003 Recorded live at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, Roxy Music performs their greatest hits, fronted by the always mesmerizing Bryan Ferry with original band members Andy MacKay and Phil Manzanera. Spend a glamorous, glorious evening with the band that defined modern musical romance, heartbreak and grace. Songs: Re-Make/Re-Model, Street Life, Ladytron, While My Heart Is Still Beating, Out of the Blue, A Song for Europe, My Only Love, In Every Dream Home a Heartache, Oh Yeah!, Both Ends Burning, Tara, Mother of Pearl, Avalon, Dance Away, Jealous Guy, Editions of You, Virginia Plain, Love Is the Drug, Do the Strand, For Your Pleasure. Two great DVD's by Roxy Music. Great performance with great sound. Greg

oldbuckster
Thebes, out of respect for you, I'll do this again. It sometimes feels like a waste of space when you only get one or two responses, anyway here we go; ACID EATERS: the Ramones CD This would be the Ramones paying homage to the songs they remember as a young band starting out. I liked some of their music, but I would not consider myself a fan. I still wonder why I bought this, maybe the title caused me to have a Flashback (remember those guys) I don't know, but I did, and am I glad. Starts right out with,Journey to the center of the Mind, watch out Ted, these lads stole your song, and never lets up until the final song,Surf City, Yeah, Surf City the same one. Guess I should list the songs, didn't want to but; Journey to the center of the Mind (Ted before he became Ted) Substitute (the Who) Out of Time (great version of the Stones) The shape of things to come (Yardbirds?) Somebody to Love (great Airplane) When I was Young (ahh the Animals) 7 and 7 is (Love I think) My Back Pages (good Dylan) Can't seem to make you mine (when's the last time you heard the Seeds?) Have You Seen The Rain (Classic CCR) I can't control Myself (got me on this one?) (the Who maybe) Surf City (Yes, Jan and Dean) That's the song list and it's a GOOD one. I really think you Geezers will really like this disc. It's a nice trip down Memory Lane, done by a REAL Punk band. Balls to the wall, normal stuff for the Ramones. RIP Joey Ramone!!!! Let the Music on this Disc speak for itself!!! PLAY THIS DISC LOUD, Dare Ya!!!

RichardP
I will submit my endorsement of the newest from Donald Fagen, "Morph the Cat," DVD-Audio, Reprise, 2006. This is called the "special edition CD" (at least on Amazon) which contains two discs. One is a regular CD, and the other has the 6-channel mix, in addition to the DD5.1, DTS5.1, and advanced resolution 2-channel mixes. Amazon had it the cheapest of any online retailer, about $17. A regular 2-ch CD is also available. The songs are not unlike his other recent releases, ("Kamakiriad"), and perhaps nothing will match the songcrafting of 1980's "Nightfly," but I like anything he has done. All his and Steely Dan DVD-A's were mixed by Elliot Scheiner, who, IMHO, is a genius in the multichannel world. Apparently, he has remixed most of SD's albums in 5.1, but none are yet scheduled for production because of multichannel market uncertainty. grog
Feeling a little classical tonight. So let's go for the world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Yo-Yo Ma has a discography of over 50 albums - which have won him 15 Grammy Awards. Yo-Yo Ma - Japanese Melodies Audio CD - Release Date: June 25, 1985 01 Matsushima-Ondo 02 Kojo-No-Tsuki 03 Zui-Zui-Zukkorobashi 04 Defune 05 Nara-Yama 06 Chin-Chin-Chidori 07 Sakura, Sakura 08 Oroku-Musume 09 Chugoku-Chiho-No-Komoriuta 10 Chiran-Bushi Sakura for example is one of the most beautiful and well-known of all Japanese melodies. The word "sakura" means "cherry blossom" and one of the most spectacular sights you will ever see anywhere in the world is the blossoming of the cherry trees in the springtime in Japan. It lasts only a few days and it ends as quickly as it begins. Perhaps that is why this melody is so sad. I picked up the Yo-Yo Ma - Japanese Melodies CD when it came out back in 1985. When I first played it I must say I did not care for it. But the second time I played it I liked it. Now after playing this CD over the years I must say I have come to love this work. This is music you must be in the mood to listen too. But if you are in the mood to allow yourself to flow into this work you will find it to be one of the greatest masterpieces of all time. Greg's pick: Chiran-Bushi. The deep sounding cello with soft bells from on high make this selection simply incrediable.
