oogins
If you're getting a progressive scan DVD player, I suggest you look here first. http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_3/dvd-benchmark-progressive-shootout-2-8-2001.html It reviews several DVD players according to which features they have, and if they have the chroma bug problem. ------------------ -Paul AMD T-Bird 900 Asus A7V Micron 256 MB PC-133 IBM 30 GB 7200 rpm ATA 100 Pioneer DVD-105 Slot-Load (16X/40X) 3Dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP NEC MultiSync M700 17" SB Live! Ray Garrison
The most recent issue of The Perfect Vision, issue #38, Sep/Oct 2001, the sister publication to The Absolute Sound, has a rave over-the-top review of the Sony DVD-NS700P, which is $349, and they state it is "Near to the best you can buy at ANY price." ------------------ Music is art Audio is engineering
eq_shadimar
Ditto with what Ray said on that Sony player. It has been kicking butt on all the reviews. I am not sure if it has the SACD abilities of the higher priced Sony player taht you mentioned though. Your link to the Toshiba did not work but I believe that Toshiba only supports DVD Audio. If you have to get one of those two units I think it would come down to features vs. price. For the most part DVD players are getting like CD players in that there is not a whole lot of differences when purchased from a name brand. Kain
Here is the info on the Toshiba SD-900E: · 540 Lines of horizontal resolution · Progressive output · DVD audio · 3-D Video DNR · DTS/Dolby digital decoding · HDCD decoding · CD-R compatible ------------------ Home Theater (getting soon): TV: Samsung SP-43L2FX (43" LCD Rear Projection HDTV) DVD Player: Toshiba SD-900E (Progressive Scan DVD Player) VCR: Sony SLV-ED100 (HiFi VCR) Receiver: Denon AVC-A11SR (230V version of Denon AVR-4802) Speakers - Center: Klipsch RC-7 Mains: Klipsch RF-7 Surrounds: Klipsch RS-7 Subwoofer: SVS CS-Ultra w/Samson S1000 amplifier
NastyHabits
Kain, The Sony 9000ES is an awesome machine. It was my first choice. But it has some problems. It has the "Chroma bug" (so does the Toshiba). It also has limited format abilities (no cd-rw, mp3, DVD-RW, etc). It does, however, have outstanding SACD playback. Further research let me discover that several high end DVD players, including the $8000 Camelot, use Panasonic transports and decoders! I spent many hours on the internet and more hours in various stores. I finally settled on the Panasonic DVD-A7. (It doesn't have the chroma bug). The Sony DVD-NS700P is also way cool, but the DVD-A7 plays DVD-audio and has really cool blue lights. I was also able to pick one up on Ebay for $350. ($999 list). I have not seen the Toshiba you mentioned, but I have spent many hours watching the Sony at my friend Mike's house, and I honestly prefer my Panasonic. The picture is better and more stable. That could be due, however, to a difference in TV's. (His is a Pioneer Elite projection unit, mine is a Panasonic direct-view HDTV). Anyway, I highly recommend the site mentioned in oogins' post. It's highly informative. Then make up your mind. Good luck! ------------------ Yo!
Audio Flynn
NAD is coming out with a 5 disc progressive scan DVD Audio/Video player sometime in the next month. I look forward to seeing a review of that player. The product offerings come out so quick recently in the DVD and SACD technologies it is difficult to determine when to wait and when to purchase. My Sony DVP S 530 D sounds great for movies but seems real obselete for music.
Kain
You probably haven't seen the Toshiba cuz it is most likely a Asian/European model as I live in Dubai, UAE. Secondly, does the S9000ES support DVD-Audio? Last question, sorry but I am a COMPLETE newbie to Home Theater and its relating stuff but, what is the "Chroma bug"? ------------------ Home Theater (getting soon): TV: Samsung SP-43L2FX (43" LCD Rear Projection HDTV) DVD Player: Toshiba SD-900E (Progressive Scan DVD Player) VCR: Sony SLV-ED100 (HiFi VCR) Receiver: Denon AVC-A11SR (230V version of Denon AVR-4802) Speakers - Center: Klipsch RC-7 Mains: Klipsch RF-7 Surrounds: Klipsch RS-7 Subwoofer: SVS CS-Ultra w/Samson S1000 amplifier
maxg
I think the Sony NS 900 has progressive scan in the US. I would take a look at it as not only does it excel at DVD's it throws in multi-channel SACD as well (it does an amazing job there too). Another benefit - it seems to be very competitively priced compared to the other sony offerings.
Kain
People, I CANNOT get the Sony 900 or 700 DVD players as they are not available here in Dubai. Please stick to the two players I mentioned in my first post. Thanks. ------------------ Home Theater (getting soon): TV: Samsung SP-43L2FX (43" LCD Rear Projection HDTV) DVD Player: Toshiba SD-900E (Progressive Scan DVD Player) VCR: Sony SLV-ED100 (HiFi VCR) Receiver: Denon AVC-A11SR (230V version of Denon AVR-4802) Speakers - Center: Klipsch RC-7 Mains: Klipsch RF-7 Surrounds: Klipsch RS-7 Subwoofer: SVS CS-Ultra w/Samson S1000 amplifier

The main reason is that Sony co developed the SACD format and is trying to make that one the winner. Since Sony is a music publishing company and provides consumer electronics I doubt if they ever will support DVD-A. Kain
Then is DVD-Audio better or SACD? ------------------ Home Theater (getting soon): TV: Samsung SP-43L2FX (43" LCD Rear Projection HDTV) DVD player: Toshiba SD-900E (Progressive Scan DVD player) VCR: Sony SLV-ED100 (HiFi VCR) Receiver: Denon AVC-A11SR (230V version of Denon AVR-4802) Speakers - Center: Klipsch RC-7 Mains: Klipsch RF-7 Surrounds: Klipsch RS-7 Subwoofer: SVS CS-Ultra w/Samson S1000 amplifier
Ray Garrison
KAiN64, Asking whether DVD-A or SACD is better is kind of like asking whether tubes or solid state is better. There are people, otherwise normal, nice people, who have widely polarized viewpoints on this. Most of the high-end audio pundits have come down solidly in the SACD camp. A lot of the home theater folks are just a firmly in the DVD-A camp. As of today, there are a LOT more SACD players you can buy than there are DVD-A players. However, most of the SACDs released to date are two channel, and every single one of the DVD-A's (both of them ) are multi-channel. Also, a lot of the material in both formats was not originally recorded at the higher sampling rate / extended resolution offered by either DVD-A or DSD (the SACD recording mechanism, direct stream digital), but are simply remasted copies of old recordings that were at one point squished into CD standard bitpacks. I think it's way too early to make any kind of definitive evaluation - producers and recording artists first need to learn how to take advantage of what the new formats offer before we'll really know how good either is going to get. On another topic - when you say the players aren't available in the United Arab Emirates,.does that mean you can't log on to, say, outpost.com or something, buy it, and have it shipped to you? Different power line configurations, or is it some customs import / export thing? Curiously, Ray ------------------ Music is art Audio is engineering
Kain
I could buy it from outpost.com but normally the shipping rates are very high.
