wuzzzer
My h/k DVD player is a DVD-A player. Since I'm only running a 2 channel setup, would it pay to look into getting any DVD-A discs? I'm also using the DVD player's RCA outputs since my amp doesn't have a digital input, if that matters at all.
Me Loves Khorns
Some of the dvd-a discs have the option of playing them on the surround option or stereo option. The only trouble is, that you have to make that change on the menu of the disc. This requires a tv or moniter in order to switch the tracks. Easy if you can see what you are doing. Sound is great too, but, you have to be able to see where you are on the menu. Paul
wuzzzer
Not a problem as my DVD-A player is hooked up to my HDTV. Should it say on the DVD-A disc box if it has a 2 channel option? My DVD player has an option to turn off all the video circuitry and I usually do that when I have a DVD concert on. I usually don't watch what's going on, I just like to listen to the music. Fish
I think most disc are marked, most of mine have 2ch option.Since there are only a limited # of releases pick your favorite and give it a try.
Me Loves Khorns
Look on the back of the cover box thingy. Usually at the bottom, will say something like: dvd a : surround or stereo Also, many of these discs have the option to listen in Dolby Digital, but the true dvd-a will give the better sound. You could probably just turn on the video component of the dvd player just long enough to navigate the disc, and then turn it off. RichardP
Over at www.avsforums.com, there is a DVD-A/SACD/Surround/multichannel section, which has been going for a long time. In it are many threads where people nominate their favorite discs. To the above, I would add: Steely Dan - Everything must go any Donald Fagen - Morph the Cat, The Nightfly, Kamakiriad Eagles - Hotel California Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms (a dual disc w/CD & DD5.1 mix; not a true DVD-A) Any Porcupine Tree DVD-A In case you see one and are tempted, I do not recommend any of the DVD-A's from the "Live from the front row" series; all I have heard are very poorly done and do not make good use of the format. Unfortunately, you are getting into the format in its dying days. Most labels have abandoned it, in part due to the meteoric rise in the average person's desire for downloadable music listened to over iPod earbuds. Apparently only a relative few of us with 5.1+ HT setups really liked the multichannel mixes. The discs are getting harder to find and more expensive (many over $20) than even one year ago. I am hoping that the new HD DVD formats will somehow keep multichannel music alive.
Fish
My copy of "Brothers in Arms"is an "advanced resolution" dvd audio, but surround only in highres, the cd version(24 bit highres) is quite good though.
Mike Lindsey
I also own Eagles "Hotel California", and Doobie Bros "Captain and Me", and both are very good... as is America's 2nd album "Homecoming" in DVD-A format. Mike

I stand corrected. It is a true DVD-A, not a DualDisc, but has the redbook CD side, which most DVD-A's don't have. It also comes in a regular CD case, not the usual larger DVD-A case. I was confused.
