Allan Songer
You'll hear one set and maybe half of the next one. The cover is low, the music will be great and the food is very decent as well (Ethiopian). But if you want to eat somewhere else, let me know. I lived in SF for ten years and get back there 5-6 times a year.
Mike Lindsey
OK... I'll tell my buddy let's stay for 2 sessions and then head out. Yeah, we saw it was Ethiopian and are skeptical. Since he doesn't come on until 9:30 I would be interested in hearing of same places to eat in the area. Thanks, Mike
Allan Songer
My favorite "old school" SF Restaurant. Great bread, stiff drinks, and the best Petrale Sole (local fish) and Cioppino in the whole wide world. Sit at the counter and sink it all in! http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2005/09/28/FDGFEES3F81.DTL
Mike Lindsey
OK, thanks! We'll definitely go there one night. Will probably go down to Fisherman's Wharf one night as well. Mike

Mike Well, if you MUST go to Fisherman's Warf, there is really only one place to eat that's worth a damn and and still has that Warf ambiance: http://www.scomas.com/

What else would you recommend? We have 2 other nights to fill. []
Allan Songer
North Beach is a HULLVALOT of fun and no trip to SF would be complete without a wander through City Lights books and cocktails at "Specs" (on of my college haunts in the 70's that's still going strong) or Tosca. Plus, THE greatest jazz club I have ever known was here--the late GREAT Keystone Korner where I heard Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Art Pepper, Bill Evans, Johnny Griffin, Joe Henderson, Horace Silver, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard and MANY MANY others back in the 70's and early '80s. The best restaurant in North Beach and one of the THE very best Italian restaurtants in San Francisco is: http://www.rosepistolasf.com/ CITY LIGHTS: http://www.citylights.com/ SPECS: http://www.bestofsanfrancisco.net/specs.htm TOSCA: http://www.sftravel.com/food/tosca.html

Oh, hell--EVERYTHING is good at Tadich!

Took it for granted! I used to hang at a cafe down the street "Cafe Italia" which sadly is now a crappy Chinese restaurant. In the old days you may as well have been sitting in Rome. Cannot agree that Rose Pistola is the best Italian restaurant. Its a nice place but certainly not the best IMO of course. My office is within walking distance and I rarely if ever choose to go there. I prefer the North Beach Restaurant for classic Italian fare and some of the more neighborhood (US Restaurant, Cafe Sport) spots for family style Italian. josh
Allan Songer
I too generally prefer the heartier fare at US Restaurant (great Calimari!) and the like, but as far as quality and freshness of the fare, Rose Pistola is hard to beat. It's a bit on the "foodie" side for me and there IS a bit of pretense, but the fried chick peas are so freaking good I DREAM about time from time to time. And the dessert chef is a genius. North Beach Restaurant is great too.
Mike Lindsey
Ahhh... this is great, I could talk food all day! As far as Italian, I love the classic Italian places (red/white tables, dimly lit, good house Chianti, etc), so if you can recommend a place like that it would be appreciated. I think we will do Tadich's, an Italian place and a seafood place down on the water (maybe the place you recommended in Fisherman's Wharf). Well, that 'aint the Rose Pistola!!! Go with Josh's fave-- North Beach Restaurant: It's a great old-school Italian restaurant!! A bit fancier that the red-checkerd table cloth and candle in the Chianti bottle places, but not at all stuffy . . . http://www.northbeachrestaurant.com/ And then walk up to Tosca for after dinner drinks! If you have your heart set on the bare bones approach, then go for "US Restaurant" on Columbus in North Beach.

He is right about Rose Pistola it is a bit foodie and I say that in a good way. North Beach is a classic italian place. Good Calamari as well! Also plan on going to Tosca for an after dinner libation. A real classic SF spot. And if you are here for a few days you should also take Allans other choice Tadich Grill. If you like old school you will love it. Great fun and a real classic. Josh
Mike Lindsey
Thanks so much, guys! I think we're set on the food! I wish I was staying out there for a few more days, but unfortunately it's a business trip. Josh, I wish I had the chance to hear your system! It is somewhat similar to mine, and I would love to hear your TT. Maybe another time... Mike Edit: Just wanted to point out that I love good Calamari! I am going to be jonesing for that now until I have it. []

I live in the East Bay which appears to be off your travel pattern of south to north to south to north. When are you going to be here ( im sure its here in the thread but I am lazy) ? Mike Lindsey
I will basically be there the 23rd - 25th, and have all of those evenings free. By day I will be in SF, but I am staying at the Sofitel next to Oracle Headquarters in Redwood Shores. Let me know how far that is from you. I wil be in the desert for a conference that week. I normally travel a bit but this month has ben the pits. St Louis yesterday, Chicago next week and Palm Desert the week of the 23rd. Redwood City is BTW a fair bit from where I live. i am in a town near Berkeley which is much closer to SF than Redwood city. If you get to the area again lets try and hook up.
