garymd
Died today at age 87. What a voice. Her first album (from 1956), Anita O'Day Sings Jazz, (later reissued as The Lady Is A Tramp), was Verve Record's first LP. http://www.anitaoday.com/
Allan Songer
Around 7-8 years ago Anita started gigging again around L.A. with a trio--I cought her about a dozen times at both the Cinegrill and the now defunct Atlas Grill. Though her voice was gravelly and she lost much of her range, her timing and swing were not diminished at all! She was great. I will miss her. If you want to hear and see her at her peak, check out the film "Jazz on a Summer Day." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuzWegDm2HY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKqUsxG4yuA&mode=related&search=
ben.
I hadn't heard - been away from media other than upstate classic rock radio at in-laws' house. Thanks guys. I wonder if she bumped into Mahalia at Newport - can't imagine they had much to chat about...

Allan Songer
This was the first Anita O'Day record I ever bought. I was at Berkeley, probably a junior and it was the COVER that got me as I was flipping through the used record bins at Rasputin's. Then I took the record home, slapped it on my old AR and really FLIPPED. This was about 30 years ago and I'm STILL hooked! Adios, baby! WE LOVED YOU!! Pick Yourself Up . . .
