intotubes
Model 19's are in the house! I am in audio heaven right now. Yes, there is music blasting out of them right now. 902 drivers on the horns - yeseree

intotubes
[:S] No, they sound like crap there. I keep moving them around but it gets no better.
Parrot
Did you get them with front grilles?
intotubes
Yeah but one is in rough shape. I will need to rebuild it and then recover all four of them I think they look cool nekkid and I don't have any small children or cats. They do look more refined with grills and I plan on restoring them. BTW- I didn't know you and gonzp were friends. He lives a few miles north of me. Great guy, and great hi-fi. -Mark

intotubes
Yowza Michael. Thumpers to boot. I'm sitting very close to them so I have to go easy with the watts. They are waiting for a bigger room.
edwinr
They should restore nicely.

cjgeraci
I agree with Parrot. I've always liked the look of 19s better without grills, and 19s done right are great speakers. And doing them with 902s is doing them right!! Gorgeous, and I bet they sound even better than they look. Congrats!!! BTW, is that a stock crossover in them babies or did you upgrade??? Carl. TBrennan
Here's the ones I bought a couple of weeks ago. 1976 models, got them from the original owner. Today I swapped in a "light diaphragm" 902 (that I got from Shawn this week) for one of the 802-Gs and couldn't tell a difference. Best turnkey speakers I've had, kind'a like a VOT with bass and highs. The big cabinet and EQed crossover are the keys.
intotubes
Those are nice. Thanks for posting the pic. I needed to look at the risers. Mine came without. I need to build some. Man these speakers kick serious *** (butt). VERY nice. I think I will keep them. What happened to the black material that covers the damping material behind the slots? It makes the slots look black. TBrennan
Tubes----Maybe these speakers had no covering over the vent, everything was original and in very nice shape. Jeff Markwart's site has the Altec factory drawings for the 19 cabinet. Here's what the 19s replaced http://home.earthlink.net/~jmarkwart/
intotubes
Yes, you've spoken of your A7's before. I think you had the Heathkit 9844's too. You can sure pick 'em. What I was getting at was mine have a black (nylon? Cotton?) material covering the fiberglass inside the cab. It only spans about half the cabinet, just so the area behind the slot looks black. It should be pretty easy to install/replace so when you have the grilles off you can't see the fiberglass damping material. I have seen pics of 19's both ways. I don't doubt you have a bone stock set. They sound incredible. Good to hear there isn't much diff between the 902 & 802 drivers. Many future upgraders will appreciate that. TBrennan
Tubes---So you put yours together from parts eh? That's swell. I'm gonna pull the woofers and staple some cloth over the vents from the inside so the damping isn't visible, it bothers my wife a little to see it. Later Model 19s used 902 drivers and ferrite 416-8C woofers and by all accounts I know of they sound just as great as earlier versions with 802-Gs and 416-8Bs. I'm a big fan of the 902 and no Alnico cultist. I was at Parts Express the other day and bought Dayton 1% caps to put in the crossovers but my wife gave me some good advice----They sound great, leave them alone. So now I think I'll build complete new crossover sets so if the new ones don't sound as good I haven't ruined the old ones. Plus many astute Altechies say the caps Altec used are unusually stable in spec over the years. Your Carmels are furniture 9844s, right? Great speakers, the 414 was a fine driver. I'm thinking that Model 19 style EQed crossovers would be just the ticket..........
ben.
Your Carmels are furniture 9844s, right? Great speakers, the 414 was a fine driver. I'm thinking that Model 19 style EQed crossovers would be just the ticket.......... Me, too. I'm going to play a bit with active networks to see what I hear first, but I see it ending up there. I've got the 9844A and a pair of 605A with only one N1600C network. I think only one can stay, and I think it'll be the bigger horn - I know myself that well. I've got to play around with those Dupes, though. I'd regret missing out on it if I didn't. I just wish I had a good box for them. All I have is the old Karlsons that've been sitting. I'd have to make the 12" cut 15", but that's no biggie. I'm probably going to start playing with top horns with the Khorns, too once they get situated back in the basement studio. I know where there's a half dozen or so A7 collecting dust... and a pair of 2360 short throws... Going multi-amp makes sense to save with building a new network every time you change things. TBrennan
Ben----Well the EQ of the 19 crossover is certainly what gives the speaker the best highs I've ever heard from a horn speaker, note that I thought Altec highs were very nice even when uncompensated and down in level. No doubt the same could be accomplished with an active crossover and proper EQ. Given a choice between 9844s and 605s I'd keep the 9844s. In fact both my A7s and my 605As are going on the block. That will leave me with my 19s, Heathkit AS-21s (9844s in sheep's clothing) and 890C Boleros.
sunburnwilly
They look like Belles or is it Belles look like them ?
TBrennan
Willy----Yes, the look of a smaller box floating above a larger one is like the Belle, the Belle was made before the 19.
sunburnwilly
Thanks Tom , Good to see you around these parts . Did I mention that I work about 10 doors down from the Provost Dungeon ?
