I have a pair of la scala's I bought of a friend and I would like to know where the serial number is located. I had them refinished and they look good. The guy I bought them from was in the navy when he got them in singapour. That was awhile ago, though. I like the way they sound. The "thing" on the back is a type AL. doug

The serial number is written on the label on the back. If the label has been removed or if the SN has faded, you can also find it stamped into the wood on the back. Look for it to be stamped on the top edge of the back panel.

The Type AL thing on the back is called a crossover.

if the big old horns have been refinished, the serial number may be filled and you might have to narrow down the model year by looking at each of the drivers and giving us the model numbers off the drivers, this method may not produce the exact year, but it can come close ...
