Cut-Throat
Yeah it's not a good thing, especially if you are company that sells interconnects by the foot!
PrestonTom
I read some where that too short of an interconnector is not a good thing. Any thoughts? t It is probably the other way around. In certain circumstances the cable capacitance can become larger (due to the extra length) and create some problems. One example would be with a "passive pre-amp" (which is actually a volume pot and some switches between a line level source and a power amp). In this case the volume pot (resistance) and the cable (capacitance) can function as a low pass filter. This is not cable voodoo, but it typically would not occur since the capacitance is typically not that much. Very long cables are another matter and can create all sorts of vulnerabilities, particularly in picking up noise. Good luck, -Tom
Erik Mandaville
t I think another forum member mentioned the disadvantage of interconnects being too short to reach equipment -- which isn't good for obvious reasons. Get one that's long enough but not longer. Tom addressed the problems with long runs of cable with certain 'passive' equipment or sources/preamps with high output impedances, which can roll-off high frequency info. Some preamps with very low output impedances can actually drive pretty extensive cable lengths with very little degradation of sound quality. Tom mentioned the other possible problem, where ICs can actually act like antennas and pick up stuff from the air one wouldn't want -- particularly a case with conventional coax, where the shield is supposed function as a shield against the bad stuff and also serve as the ground connection. Painful Reality
I read some where that too short of an interconnector is not a good thing. Any thoughts? It is really bad if your components are far apart.
Erik Mandaville
"It is really bad if your gear is far apart." Well, the word 'far' is relative -- kind of like one's person's preference for filet mignon vs another's for flank. Or Italian instead of Chinese! Excellent example! Actually, a certain amount of separation can be a good thing. Erik
