meagain
Did the top look melted? Why is it screwed up?
Deang
Same question on this end. More specifically, I'm curious about the discoloration/nasty looking stuff on the side of the cap in the pic with the quarter next to it.
BEC
Dean, The nasty looking stuff on top seems to be soldering flux. This is the cap that is so bad that my meter can't read ESR. More interesting perhaps is how it acted in the circuit. The symptoms were that the tweeter did not work and the midrange sounded muffled. This cap was the first cap in the tweeter filter on the AL crossover. It's high ESR and change in capacitance were why the tweeter did not work. Seems also that the resultant bad cap and the next inductor made some sort of a funny circuit that dragged down the squawker. Bob
boom3
Hey Bob, what kind of dielectric was this?

Deang
Undoubtably polyester film and foil. Since the layers can be separated, it's not a metallized type. Nice cap actually. Well, it was before Mrs. Beasly's second grade art class got a hold of it.
