blake_mooney
I'm wondering if I should place my PM 5.1 sub on the carpet or not? I've heard you get better bass if you place a small flat piece of word under it, or something of the like.Any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance. 33klfan
It depends if it's down firing or not. If down firing then yes. If front firing, then not really.

Speedball
if it's downfiring and you want a change, try it on spikes then on top of a slab of concrete....
Briankz
It's not going to make that much difference wood, carpet or cement. Position of the sub in the room is the key factor.
Roc Rinaldi
.....and what is the best position for the sub? 1st choice; 2nd choice; third choice, etc.
Speedball
Disregard what I said IF it is not a regular old subwoofer. What is this PM5.1?
colterphoto1
Carpet doesn't make hardly any difference to the low frequencies. For any serious discussion on this topic, witness the threads on the Architectural section talking about the immense size of bass traps needed to tame low frequencies. Even a thick carpet with pad will have virtually no effect on sounds below 80 Hz.
Roc Rinaldi
but carpet can have a big effect on love making don't you agree?
colterphoto1
but carpet can have a big effect on love making don't you agree? NO idea on that one Regarding sub positions, I think a good place to start is non-equidistant from the floor, front wall, and side wall. ie, pulled slightly out from the front wall (necessary in the case of rear loaded like RSW) and a different distance from the side wall. Placement in the corner will make the sub louder but more boomy in most cases. I experiment about 6 inches at a time. Doc has a good primer on sub placement. And it makes a difference where you sit in the room.

h2only
I had to put my RSW-10d on a peice of carpet, I have wood floors and the sub itself was moving all over the place on the wood. I didnt notice any difference in sound though.
