Anyone know why these Forte woofers would look like this?

The Forte' had a pleated surround like the one on the right. The gray looking one is not factory. It's either a foam surround or a "rubber" surround that's cot some 'crud' on the surface. That's not the problem, but the very different surround design is a problem if you expect original performance.

Dang, Forte's and Chorus don't seem to come up very often in Indiana. I'll keep looking.

The Forte on the right has a reverse half-roll rubber surround, that's the way they came from the factory.

For that matter, so does the one on the left. The grey color is due to surface oxidation of the rubber. Armor -All will probably clean it up OK.

How did it happen?

I think the guy might own one of those negative-ion generators sold as air-fresheners. They produce ozone witch will cause the type of damage seen here.
