Arkytype
Back in March of 1974, PWK wrote a tongue-in-cheek article for the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society. It was a response to various claims made by "experts" regarding loudspeaker design. It later became a Dope from Hope which I've attached. One prevalent premise back then was that the more power a loudspeaker could handle, the lower its distortion would be and the frequency response would be more linear. Now 35 years later, McIntosh Labs offers the ultimate amplifier load bank--oops, I mean loudspeaker in the XRT2K. At a rated sensitivity of 89 dB/1watt @ 1 Meter, the 452 lbs. XRT2K with 110 drivers will output 122 dB @ 2,000 watts input. By comparison, the 175 lbs. Klipschorn with three drivers will output 121 dB with 1/20th the power!! http://www.mcintoshlabs.com/data/brochures/XRT2K.pdf Lee http://www.mcintoshlabs.com/data/brochures/XRT2K.pdf'> Ultimate LSH Loudspeaker.pdf
Coytee
Masterlu isn't going to like you very much!! [] They can do with 1 watt what I can do with .0078125 watts and to get to 119 db's, it's going to cost them 1,024 watts and me? only 16 Heaven forbid I ran 256 watts through as I'd be about 133 db's to their 131 db's (with 16,384 watts []) They DO have me on "plug ugly" though... oldbuckster
McIntosh makes wonderful Amps and Receivers, electronics period, but their speakers SUCK, so big, such power hungry speakers, but who am I to say? After seeing and hearing them, now I know why McIntosh makes 1000 watt per Amps.............
michael hurd
I think I will keep my amplifier load testing bank that will absorb 1.5 kw for hours on end, with negligable compression. Can't wait to get my 7kw + load bank up and running.
