Don Richard
I have a pair of '70s era K-33 woofers (square magnets) with severe cone damage. Can these be reconed?
Daddy Dee
I've used speakerrepair.com for reconing. I'd suggest to compare the cost of reconing with one of Bob Crites K33 replacements.
Tom Mobley
Bob Crites is known as BEC on this forum. He posts plenty. He commisioned the production of K-33 replacements, there's a stamped frame version that looks like the factory model and a cast frame deluxe version. I'll bet you can have two new ones for less than the cost of the re-cones. These things are identical to the factory K-33 down to the smallest measurable details of the electric and acoutic specs. Don Richard
Thanks for the info. I was hoping that an accurate replacement would be available, but I couldn,t find one that was suitable. I'll check with BEC, thanks again!
Daddy Dee
Not to quibble, but to be accurate on Bob's K33 replacement, it is not a copy of the current K33. I don't think Eminence would sell a clone of the woofer they build for Klipsch. Bob's replacement has lower bass extension than the current K33. As Tom says, Bob's woofer is a superb drop in replacement.
Groomlakearea51
Agreed with Daddy Dee. Attempting to recone, etc is nt worth it. BEC's are reasonable, and a perfect drop in... and they match the early ones with the lower resonance freq at 26Hz.
Duke Spinner
jbl, altec ..recone eminence .. replace
djk
Re-cone costs $60 each, new from Klipsch $129 each. If you have to ship to the re-cone center add $30 a pair. $150 pair vs $258 pair, or if you live in a larger town with a re-cone shop, $120 vs $258. $100 is $100 (in my wallet).
