nortynorty
It seems of late, I have been pulling out many of my old albums. While they are enjoyable, they lack the punch/presence of my cd's. (Well duh-h many of you are saying). I am not expecting that the same music played on vinyl as compared to cd will sound exactly the same, but the difference is greater than I think it should be. My records are well cared for and in good condition. They are cleaned with Discwasher D4 before each use and the stylus is periodically cleaned with an Audio Technica liquid from about 20 years ago that still has about 3/4 of the fluid left. The records are kept in plastic coated sleeves. I have an old Dual 1219 turntable with a Stanton cartridge (don't recall the model, but it cost around $50). My question is, how much of what I'm experiencing would you attribute to the cartridge? I put the Stanton in about 3 or so years ago when I rarely put a record on the turntable...maybe once or twice a year. Now however, that I am listening more, I'm wondering if the cartridge is my weakest link and a change would increase my listening pleasure. Mighty Favog
Norty- The cartridge does IMO have the most to do with it. Other factors will contribute as well but the cartridge should be the biggest one. Of the three I own/use here is a run down: Sure V15 Type V w/VN45HE stylus- the quickest of the three with accurate tone qualities. My favorite of the bunch, and the most wore out.(Paid $200 in 1984) Ortofon VMS30 mkII- much smoother and less bright than the Sure. Definitley for the romantic evenings with whomever. If Barry White ever designed a cart., this would be it. (Paid $180 in 1985) Stanton 999SS- although the least played it is with out a doubt the sturdiest cart. of the three. Still not bad for the money. lynnm
The tonearm on that Dual is also likely costing you a lot of performance as well. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca.1900)
Frzninvt
My suggetion to your problem would be to buy a used DBX Dynamic Range Expander preferably the Series III model which is a fantastic component for adding tremendous dynamics and impact to records. So much so that they will sound warmer than your CD's will. The DBX 3BX-DS unit has 3 bands of impact recovery and the Series III only has one, the Series III has a little more ooomph which will be beneficial for record playback. They can be found on eBay quite regularly, trust me you will not be disappointed, they make quite a difference. It is completely user adjustable as well so you can dial in the amount of dynamics that you want. Try it you'll like it. ------------------ Living Room Sony KP-43T70 43" Television Denon AVR 3300 A/V Receiver DBX BX-3MkII Power Amplifier (LF/ALF/RF/ARF) (Belle's - Oak Clear/Cane) & LWE-I's w/Motion Feedback (Mahogany) DBX BX-3MkII Power Amplifier (RR/ARR/LR/ALR) (Heresy II's (Walnut/Cane) & Infinity SM82 (Walnut) DBX MPA-150 Mono Split Spectrum Amplifier © (KV-4 - Black) Klipsch KSW-15 Powered Subwoofer (2) Nakamichi DVD-10 DVD/LCD/CD Player Nakamichi MB-10 Music Bank CD Changer Technics SL-DL5 DD Linear Tracking Turntable JVC HR-S7500U SVHS Video Cassette Recorder RCA DRD-303RA Satellite Receiver VC3 Deluxe Video Clarifier DBX 400XG Program Route Selector DBX 120X-DS Subharmonic Synthesizer/Electronic Crossover DBX 3BX-DS 3-Band Dynamic Range Controller (2) 1-L, 1-R DBX 14/10 14-Band Computerized Equalizer/RTA Analyzer/SPL Meter Panamax 1000+ Surge Protector/Line Conditioner Sega Dreamcast w/3 Controllers & VMU's/S-Video Output Bedroom Yamaha RX-900U Receiver Panasonic DVD-A120U DVD/CD Player Sony SLV-740HF Hi-Fi VCR DBX 400XG Program Route Selector BBE Audio Recovery System DBX 2015G 15 Band/Channel Equalizer A/D/S L300E Mini Speakers (Eggshell) GE 20" Television

jdm56
Nay, nay, nay on the dbx, my friend. And this I speak from experience gleaned during my "black box" phase of audiophilia. They do make an audible difference, but with time, at least in my extremely humble opinion, they also can get wearisome. Noise modulation starts to become noticable. And it seems they work the poorest on recordings that need them the most, if you know what I mean. Skip the trip down memory lane with that record player! Just hang on awhile longer for the market to settle down, or if money is no problem, geez, just buy a DVD-Audio player AND an SACD player and enter the world of tomorrow today! ------------------ JDMcCall
