Where will the surrounds sound the best?

My room is square 14 feet by 14 feet. My sofa is 2 feet from one of the walls. I have two options for surround placement. Please tell me which is better.

1. Since I am about 2 feet from the back wall, I can place the surrounds 1-2 feet behind me and then 7-8 feet vertically on the side walls.

2. I can place the surrounds on the back wall 6-7 feet high.

Which is better?

From the rear wall it is about 2 feet and from the side walls it is about 3 feet.

Then what about the back wall placement I mentioned?

Secondly, what is the ideal surround placement?

I believe that up on the side walls is the best and most in keeping with a standard layout.

There are a couple of reasons to think so.

The first is about simple position relative to the listener. The surround sound is about ambiance rather than "behind". Most "standards" put the surround speakers directly left and right, plus or minus 10 degrees or so. Therefore, even a bit forward of 90 degrees is okay.

The second is about aiming the surround speakers. It is probably fair to say that the designers do things with the assumption the listener will be "on axis". That is to say, the side wall mount will aim the speakers toward the listener. Even with wide dispursion speakers, mounting them on the rear wall is going to have the listener in such an "off axis" position, as to mess up the frequency response.

There is something to be said for being off axis. One theory says that ambiance works best when the sound can't be localized, i.e. sprayed around the room.

I would suggest some experimentation before you make the final choice. If you can get the surrounds up in the corner, that might be optimum.

Again, the standard diagrams suggest the side wall.

Kain64 - Think of a lighthouse, and the way that the light that comes out is focused into a beam, and that beam has a dispersion to it that causes it to cover a larger area the further you get away from it. The WDST surround speakers have the same effect -- the further you get from them, the wider an area you cover. If you are too close to them, and that "beam" of dispersion starts too high up the wall, you may be under the "beam" and the sound will pass over you.

The 60 degree thing refers to the angle made by two lines, drawn starting from the center of the speaker, with one line going down towards the floor and the other line going up towards the ceiling. If you measured the angle at their intersection (like the top of a triangle, for example), it would be 60 degrees, and this is the dispersion pattern of the sound from top-to-bottom.

I don't know if this made any sense -- haven't had my coffee yet this AM.

Ah, I see what you are talking about. Smile.gif

How far vertically and horizontally should the surround speakers be if I place them on the side walls?
