  1. You know those receivers are probably more than you need for the RF-62s. There are quite a few receivers that will do a great job for less money. See if your local costco has Onkyo HT-RC160. They had a great deal on these at $299.Or 607 (same as 160 plus extra HDMI and a few other inputs) for $390 from newegg.com or Amazon. Free shipping and no tax. Onkyo's run hot, so give them room for ventilation. Or see if you want to get a Denon like mine - AVR1910. I've used it with RF-62s and now running RF-7s . 6ave.com has the open box one for less than $400 and it comes with full denon warranty. There is a ton of options...
  2. There are a lot of refurbished Marantz units in retailers and online, which makes me wonder about quality. HK receivers were known to have all kinds of HDMI bugs (don't know if they have been solved yet). Don't know anything about NAD. Generally Pioneer Elite sounds very good with Klipsch (I've got a Pioneer, which is a basically rebedged Elite) and the quality of Elite models is very good.
  3. I've got Denon 1910 90w x 7 and Pioneer 2012 THX select 100w x 7 (same as one of the Elite models) and RF7s as main front. From the sound - like Klipsch Pioneer combo more, but Denon is newer model and has HDMI, so RF7s hooked up to it. Denon sounds good with RF7s, but i though that Pioneer was ever so slightly more pleasant.
  4. I don't see a point in using anything but HDMI if you have HDMI capable gear. Speakers will always use regular copper pair, so that's safe. If someone's equipment doesn't support HDMI and they want it to last a bit longer, well - start putting money away on new system and cables. It always suck to replace an entire AV rack when single AMP or DVD goes and there is nothing else copatible to replace them with. Oh, and there will always be somone making equipment compatible with older technologies - it just may cost extra.
  5. I've wired my entire house with Cat6 and new coax, but i really don't think HDMI is going any time soon. It will last at least another 7 eyars before the replacement cabling will start to gain popularity. And even then, it's not going to be a problem since most of the HDMI cables are used inside the AV. So replacing them will be easy. Those who run 1080p projectors, 70" or bigger silver screen with 50" HDMI - if you have money for such setup, you will be able to pay for new cabling installed. Harsh? Sure, but also true.
  6. I would rather get an AVR that i don't have to ship back and forth in the first place. Look at how many refurb HKs there and how many Denons. I've made my choice.
  7. Wife needs to be upgraded or modified would be my guess. After all, that's the section where it's posted.
  8. Stretch your budget to $300 and run to Costco to see if they still have the Onkyo HT-RC160 receiver. It is the same as 607, minus a few inputs. Bang for your buck - it is the best deal out there. Be warned - Onkyo's run hote and need a lot of cooling, otherwise you will fry it. I don't like HK because of all their HDMI bugs and failure rates.
  9. Onkyo's generally run very hot and require a lot of cooling. Make sure there is a lot of room where the AVR is and that it doesn't overheat. Onkyo is generally the bang-for-your-buck type of brand and defenetly does well in providing features for the price. I looked at Onkyo (and i still have one) but went with Denon for my recent install due to heat issues. Denons run very cool.
  10. Its a great how-to article that i will use for instructions. However, can you give any advise on repairing/leveling the sport where the edge veneer broken off? I need to remove the glue and then level the surface out. Goo-Off and Bondo? Also - what tools/technique did you use to make straight edgebands? I can't see how i can cut 5 feet in one motion without messing it up somehere... Just pinning a long metal ruller to the veneer and cutting? Thanks!
  11. That's what i was thinking... but not sure how to remove the veneer glue from the cabinet after i remove the veneer. I don't want to soak the cabinet with any liquids, as im afraid it may deform or have issues with adhesion of the new veneer. Any advise on removing old veneer glue?
  12. It is an excelent receiver. I'm sure i will be using mine just for stereo for now, since my main system is on the HDMI on Denon. There is definetelly something in these higher end old units that makes one smile...
  13. yea, looks exactly like mine on the back too. What model is yours? Remote is kind of cool for these too. Are you using regular speaker wire for antena? I should try that... I've paired this thing with RF-7s for a bit and it was awesome - really like the sound. I also have Denon 1910 and i think i like the sound of this Pioneer more...
  14. That wasn't even the full price, at which point I gave up on the idea. Just not worth spending $600+ in parts alone...
  15. I'm in San Diego. I've just got a quote from Bob Crites for all the parts and it comes out to $530+shipping. Ouch. At this price I don't know if it's worth working on it instead of just waiting until a working unit comes up, even if it is not in top shape.
  16. The speakers are a little beat-up and do need a bit of work to get them back to excellent condition. I don't mind the work part, as long as i know that what i'm doing is going to work. Here are the pictures
  17. Hey all, I've found a La Scala empty shell. Wondering how much in parts it would cost to put everything together (speaker, horn, crossover, etc). I may take it on as a restoration project if the parts are avaliable. If restored to fully working condition and great visual, but with after market parts, what could it cost? I love working on old speakers, but don't wont to bother with this if i'm going to loose a lot of money on the project. Right now the box is black - i was thinking to either take old paint off, fix dents, scratches and put new one one. Or take the old black paint off and just put light stain with clear coat to show the grain. Any suggestions? If i take on the project, i promise to post pictures of the progress.
  18. Can you snap a picture of the back of the unit? The front looks exactly like the one i got, minus the Elite name.
  19. Yes, I'll get them done tomorrow when i get some light. Too dark right now for detaied pics.
  20. Any advice or recommendations on refinishing two chery RF-5s that are in somewhat rough shape? It looks like they have a really thin veneer and i was wondering if it is possible to sand it lightly and put a new coat of stain. Right now cabinets have a few chips in veneer (missing pieces her and there) as well as scratches and marks from drinking glasses... I've searched the forum and internet but most are talking about working with thicker veneer or plywood cabinets. I don't know if the veneer on RF-5s can be resurfaced or if it needs to be stripped and new applied. The problem as i see it is the fact that RF-5s are not made of wood/plywood but in part made of MDF. ANy thoughts?
  21. Ah, good ! It always feels good to make a quality item yourself instead of paying for lesser quality. It looks good and can be a conversation piece
  22. Why not make one yourself? I needed stands for my RB-5s and with about $35 in supplied made great looking stands with great stain and all. They will even cut the wood for you at Home Depot
  23. They actually sound just fine, just the caps pushed in.
  24. Hey guys, Anyone has or knows where to get replacement drivers for RF-7s? Just need to replace pushed in membrane.
