  1. Make an adapter plate out of wood, with 2/4 holes for the OmniMount bracket, and a thread-matched bolt for the S-1....
  2. Amy - I challenge your marketing copy writers to match the prose on woot, to wit: "The rumble of the 4 inch shielded woofer made the cabin boy wet himself in fear."
  3. Have you checked out Omnimount speaker mounts? They used to have a tool on their website where you could find compatible mounts based on speaker model, and some of them could articulate pretty well (which may address your need and still let you use the Klipsch-provided mounting connection on the cabinet).
  4. Goodbye HD DVD - we hardly knew ye... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080218/bs_nm/dvd_toshiba_nand_dc_1
  5. Yes, the C-2 can be bi-amped: "The C-2 offers bi-wire capabilities allowing the use of one or two speaker level inputs as desired for improved connectivity." Is there a pair of jumpers in the box with the speaker? Even if there is, the simplest, cleanest way to address this is to cut a very short piece of speaker wire to connect the binding posts together on the back of the speaker - positive to positive, and negative to negative. Then just hook one pair of speaker wires from your Sony to the speaker.
  6. Not sure if it's still there (I bet it is), but I always liked Luna in Little Italy (on Mulberry St near Canal). It's a dive Italian place that serves your wine in a short little juice glass, and the food was great.
  7. I think it's also worth checking into the Onkyo line up. They seem to lead the pack as far as features and price/performance now - with HDMI audio processing on the 605. Several home theater magazines have given these rave reviews. Worth a listen, anyway. And remember, in most cases you can buy these receiver from a B&M store so you can audition and then return the ones you don't want - check the return policy before doing so.
  8. It IS a beauty, for sure. Well done. May I ask how you cleaned the chassis? I cosmetically restored my Fisher 101 and found that to be a huge PITA - used Mother's Billett Polish with rags and q-tips and still couldn't get to it all. Also don't know how/if to clean the front brass faceplate with the silkscreen lettering on it - I don't know how to do that without the lettering coming off as well.
  9. Ah, the plan is working perfectly....
  10. You can check the woofer by gently pressing on the cone with both thumbs, moving the cone in and out, and listening for rubbing or any rasping noise.....should be silent.
  11. If we start enough threads on this topic it will be like a Denial of Service attack on mas [] I think you may be seeing the difference between filming on film, and filming on videotape. Extras are often shot on videotape, and it produces a different look than shooting on film.
  12. You are exactly right - when streaming starts, it'll be a pissing match of which streaming format is superior. Round and round it goes!
  13. Glad you had a good experience with a boutique company. Of course, at those prices, I'd hope they'd do that for you [:|]
  14. I do not believe the A30 supports analog connections for more than 2channel, so you won't want to use that. Given your DSP-A1, your audio will be limited to standard DD and DTS over an optical digital audio connection (unless it supports MPCM, in which case the Toshiba can convert TrueHD to PCM and pass it to your DSP-A1 for playback). For video, you can use HDMI from the A30 to your TeeVee. (I assume you meant COMPONENT video is what you're using now, rather than composite - 3 cables versus one).
  15. Damon - I, too, have been watching this unit and the Onkyo Pro 885. What made you choose this over its cousin from Onkyo?
  16. Alot of your answer depends on what you are planning to use as signal sources, and how many of them there are. I don't know how many HDMI inputs are on your planned TeeVee, but you will at least need some type of input for every source, or a separate switching unit, or a receiver to do the switching. However, not all the connections need to be the same. If you don't plan to buy a high definition DVD player, then you can likely feed the Sony with component video - it will easily pass a DVD signal (480p) to your set. You can pass up to 1080i over component cables. And without a HD DVD player, you won't be passing any audio via the HDMI so there's really no point in going through the receiver. Bottom line - if your only source for now will be a standard definition DVD player, just connect it directly to the Sony with a component cable. And you can buy them cheap from places like www.monoprice.com if you don't already have one. For heaven's sake, don't buy a Monster cable or some other exotic brand - save your money. If you want to connect via HDMI from your DVD player (assuming it has the outputs), you can just connect directly to the Sony and not go through the receiver. Upconverting in a DVD player would only benefit you if the scaling chips in it were better than what's in the Sony - I have no idea how good they are. But, you hear good things about the Oppo players, and the Toshiba HD DVD players are said to do a great job upconverting standard DVDs also.
  17. Probably lots of folks that don't have 1080p-capable display devices, though.
  18. Hey Doug, still enjoying those Academy speakers? Yes, although right now only 1 is in servce as a center channel between my Chorus speakers. When the basement is finished, I may press 2-4 more into service as surround speakers.
  19. The KV-4 is the center speaker designed for the CF series - maybe you could find one of them and sell the OP your KV-3.
  20. I also bought an SACD player a few years back and I have maybe 10 discs. I have no regrets about the expenditure - I got to enjoy a killer audio format on a killer sound system and it brought me goosebumps. Worth every penny. And I bought a Fisher tube amp to see what that sounded like. And I bought 6 Academy speakers to see what they sounded like. I guess my point is that to me this hobby is about having fun with new stuff and widening my experiences.
  21. Or everyone can just sit on the sidelines and pontificate....man, you'd spend that much on a fancy dinner for one night. Why not just have some fun? Sheesh, everyone is so "god this is the most important debate in the world" about this - lighten up!

  23. Onkyo 605 and 805 receivers are currently getting lots of positive reviews for their leading edge capabilities....
  24. Perhaps - not here to debate that. Just wanted to mention that if an average movie (with extras) takes up about 6GB on a DVD, you'd need about 9 hours to download it on a 1.5mb DSL connection (which is probably what the average DSL-equipped home has these days). I realize that doesn't take into consideration any additional compression techniques that might be utilized, but it also doesn't take into consideration retranmissions/restarts that might be needed during a 9 hour period. However, given I wait 3 days to cycle a Netflix movie, it's not unreasonable to think I'd wait a day to download one. OTOH, those file sizes are not High Definition - how long would that take? (Here's the simple calculator tool I used: http://www.ibeast.com/content/tools/band-calc.asp)
