  1. I can't believe you removed that strategically placed piece of styrofoam. You would have done better to find out exactly where it went -- now, your player will never be the same
  2. Pick your poison. http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?ampstube&1052463195&class&3&4& http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?ampstube&1052461319&class&3&4& http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?ampstube&1052408094&class&3&4& http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?ampstube&1052598937&class&3&4& http://www.divertech.com/mgsi15dt.html
  3. Well, I got two Cornwalls packed inside a sheet metal vault, weighing 315 LBS. -- from San Jose CA. to Dayton, OH. for $132. I'm getting weak from the repitition -- but I'm convinced most of the magic with tubes resides in the Class A realm. The longer you can stay in Class A -- the better.
  4. What was the compared? The M-Audio card and the Card Deluxe? Or one or the other against the Planet? Please, define "more pleasant".
  5. These folks are primarily known for their crossovers. Tom V of SVS likes this company. At close to $1000 for an assembled amp -- this get us into AE-25 Superamp territory. For that kind of money -- I'd rather have an AE-25. On the solid state end -- there's Monarchy Audio. Neat looking stuff though, and with only one transistor -- probably sounds killer.
  6. Read very carefully, especially the last paragraph. "Everyone in the audio tube business knows that the justly famous brand names of yesteryear, such as Brimar, GEC, Mullard, RCA and Telefunken are scarce and often expensive. Although we supply all the major brands as available, and we have many in stock, our policy is to offer a range of tubes. These are all new and mostly of current manufacture and are always the best we can source from around the world. The result is a range, which we call our CVC Premium brand. Our special processing gives you a selection of valves for low noise, hum and microphony on pre-amp tubes and controlled burn-in on power tubes to improve stability and avoid weaknesses." When you click on the link for 'CVC', you can scroll down to the tube in question. This is either a relabeled Sovtek KT-88, or a nice Chinese copy. Sorry Dale.
  7. Justin, my comment was directed at Tom, and his statement that SET takes care of half of his music. He realizes the benefits, as well as the limitations. I would never slam you. Oh my, Tom -- it's going to fry your brain getting a tube preamp in front of these -- really.
  8. That's a very healthy attitude. Yeah, the transparency of SET is to die for -- no doubt about that. I would have loved to have kept the Apollos -- but $2K and $450 in replacement tubes was a bit much for the "other half". Of course, maybe down the road I can build something like these for myself. Was it painful? Some of those areas inside the chassis look kind of cramped -- you did an excellent job in there -- looks very clean!
  9. Well, they are very pretty. So, what do you think about SET?
  10. Think I'll stick with crossovers -- Nice Job! Guess you still have to do the other one before you fire them up?
  11. Jeff -- right now, as I write, there is a set of Welborne 300B Laurels with the ultimate upgrades on AudiogoN. Included is an entire collection of various tubes for the monoblocks. $2500. These will go fast. http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?ampstube&1052436689&class&3&4&
  12. If $1800 is merely the cost of two crossover boards, and does not include drivers -- then I would have to say shame on Klipsch, as that would be a ridiculous amount of money for crossovers.
  13. That sounds like a plan. Oh my...I'm turning into a Heritage Bigot.
  14. The Tesla KT-88-S is supposed to be the bomb, and I've been reading all kinds of good things about the Slovokian tubes as a whole. My Quicksilvers are using the Tesla EL-34's, and the system sounds very dynamic and smooth. It wouldn't be fair to not give some credit to the 8 Tesla output tubes.
  15. I actually thought the same thing. Betcha it's her.
  16. No problem. Yeah, that's about right. My Cornwalls in that 'vault' weighed 315 lbs. San Jose, CA. to Dayton, Ohio was around that as well. Hope things pan out -- have you heard from her yet?
  17. What a shame about the 3045's -- such beautiful amps. A pair showed up on Audiogon about a month ago, and I was drooling all over them. Researching the information on the tubes was depressing. Man, what's up with Fish? I didn't think I was being rude. Sorry Fish, I didn't mean to raise your scales.
  18. Who the hell is 'Georgie'? Welcome to the forum.
  19. Be careful. The Genalex Golden Lions are extremely rare and often faked. You need to know what to look for. The real deal should be between $250 and $300 PER TUBE.
  20. http://members.lycos.nl/Aren/id52.htm Well Leo, you could always add one to your DIY list.
  21. The unit seems well liked by the reviewers. Don't forget about diminishing returns and hair splitting. If it sounds good -- then it sounds good.
  22. I predict the treble of the Planet will sound dry and emasculated. Roll off that treble baby -- cuz that's what them 'audiophiles' like.
