Try an old H/K 430 for ~$50, it is a good receiver, especially for the money. If you end up not liking it, you could probably sell it and get most (if not all) your money back.

The laser reads from the bottom of the CD, the transparent side. However, if I remember correctly, the data is directly under the top label, so a scratch to the top of a cd can damage the data permanently.

I don't even think they are sure if it's electromagnetic. I read this thing about and it claimed that affected people could still hear the hum clearly even inside a highly shielded room.

I believe the hums in New Mexico were rather different. IIRC, they were not sound waves but the people were actually hearing them INSIDE their heads. Definitely a weird phenomenon.

Well, I can't give you a full explanation of 'how decibels work' since I don't understand it all too well myself, but I'll answer you because I don't think anyone else is gonna reply to you anytime soon. I'm pretty sure when they say down 3dB at 30hz they mean that the sound coming from the speaker at 30hz is 3 decibels lower than everything else. As for the sensitivity ratings, those tell you how many decibels a speaker will put out on 1 watt of electrical power measured from 1 meter away. A Klipschorn, for example, has a sensitivity rating of 104 dB/1W/1M. While a Klipsch Forte has a rating of 98/dB/1W/1M. If I remember correctly, a 10 dB increase in sound output will sound twice as loud. Klipsch has a sensitivity chart that tells you about how many watts are needed to drive speakers of varying sensitivity ratings. Now remember, I am not too familiar with this subject and I wouldn't be surprised if I've made a few errors. I'll let someone else do the overview since they will be much more knowledgable (and accurate).

I'm willing to sell my H/K 630. It needs to be cleaned up a little bit (including the knobs) but, other than that, it works perfectly fine. All lights work, too.

Between the two speakers, there is a dramatic difference in the sound. With the Khorns, I can turn the treble knob almost all the way up and it doesn't quite have those 'sparkly' highs of the Fortes. If this is the case (that the Khorn's highs are weak), then what do you suggest should be done to improve them? I've retightened all the screw connections on the crossover (that is what I meant by 'free crossover tweak') but it did not seem to change anything. I ran a 20hz-16000khz frequency sweep and it sounds just fine, but for some reason it sounds a bit limited in the top end when playing music. I don't know what the condition of the capacitors are on the crossovers simply because I don't know what I'm looking at.

I have a pair of '74 Klipschorns with type AA crossovers (with zener diodes) and AlNiCo drivers and they sound absolutely fantastic. However, there doesn't seem to be much high frequency sound coming from them. The tweeters are working (confirmed by ear), but you really can't hear the highs. I've powered these with an HK430 and a Dynaco tube amp. I've used a pair of Fortes in the same room with the same equipment and there's definitely a lot more top end on them. I've tried that 'free crossover tweak' from the earlier thread too, without much difference.
