  1. I'd pull those 2 EL34s so fast the pins would spark!
  2. Oh yes, Phoenix in the summer! Were you there the day it hit 122 deg F (50 C)? I was-couldn't really tell much difference from the usual 112-115! Yes, dry heat--like a pizza oven!
  3. Go with a GOOD sub if you really want low bass and your room is on the large side.
  4. This guy is going downhill fast. Sold his Ducati to buy golf balls, fer Chrissakes! But Nina buys some neato clothes. Maybe she'll model for us?
  5. What is it about caps. that can make some sound better than others? Assuming 2 diff. type caps. of the same value, why would they sound different? I hate this electrical stuff!
  6. I also converted my Khorn AA's to A's, but then converted them back and added the 1.0 uFd bypass cap. that has been described here somewhere. It sounds real good now with SET amps. Eventually I'll try some other crossover things-there is one described in detail here too.
  7. This thread makes me wonder about the reverse condition-running "8 ohm" Khorns on a 4 ohm SET tap. If I have power to spare, would the distortion be lower? Think I'll give this a try tonight.
  8. I'm using 2 genuine Cerwin-Vega Earthquakes as subs-crossing over from Khorns ~50Hz. I have them firing right into the rear corners of the room. Don't know if the bass is "fast", but it sure rumbles the house when it's on a CD.
  9. I was asleep too. Any thoughts here on how a BAT sounds vs a Granite 657? They're both way to many $$$$ for me, but I'm curious.
  10. 4F, as in 1. Find 'em 2. Feel 'em 3. F#&k 'm 4. Saving the best for last, FORGET 'EM!
  11. Al, Any idea about how much 2 of these new steep-slope Khorn Xovers will cost-especially the first pair (hint, hint). Benesesso
  12. I'm going to N.O. in 2 weeks for a company "celebration/meeting" for the fabrication work we did in Italy-and the installation of the world's biggest nuclear steam generators. But time will be limited, so I'll have to ask for a rain check to see you. Any good tips on where to eat/things to do (Sunday, 1/18)?
  13. Y'all see that white thing in Gort's visor? Well, that white thing became a strong light beam-strong enought to vaporize things that Gort didn't like-such as Army tanks, etc. So, let's see. Maser (~1953) became Laser (patent 1958, Maiman's first working laser ~1960). Release date for the movie (w/Gort)-1951! That's when I saw it at age 10. Big event in my life. 1963 was another-heard my first Khorns!
  14. Agree, fascinating. So what to do now? Wait for Al's extreme-slope Xovers for Khorns, or do something to my "bridged AA's"? I was thinking about ordering the Solen 2.5 mH air core, 14 ga. woofer inductors. Would they make the most "low cost" improvement, or should I try something else? FWIW, the tweeters now sound great-I hear things that I never did before. Great demo CD is the soundtrack from the movie "The Sting".
  15. Go for it! Just remember that something like 90% of bike accidents happen in your first year of riding. You'll learn to regard cars and trucks as "cages" that are just waiting for the right time to KILL you. You'll also learn about "reverse or countersteering", whereby you put pressure on the handlebars to lean the bike with no effort-but it's backwards to some people. You press forward a little (not actually turn) the right side bar to turn RIGHT! You also get to list your bikes in the bike fora (forums)just like we list our music-making gear. 1988 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10 (1000 cc) 1986 Honda VF1000R (1000 cc) 1989 Honda Hawk GT (650 cc)
  16. Christmas Day (noon) Left Milan Italy to DRIVE all the way up to Dubai2000's (Wolfram) house in northern Germany to see/hear/buy his Wright preamp and 3.5 SETs. Had a great visit (too short), and headed back to Milan. Now they drive pretty fast in Italy, but I was repeatedly passed on the autobahns while running over 200 KPH! Great fun until we (wife and I) exited the St. Gotthard tunnel (17 km long). Ran right into a blizzard! Fortunately had a set of full chains with us. Drove for about 2 hours at 35 KPH behind 5 (yes, FIVE) large dump trucks w/snowplows. Finally made it home to set up the new gear. Discovered that SETs/tubes really are so good! Also discovered that an old CD I had, and stopped listening to with my old SS stuff, makes a great tube demo. Try the soundtrack of "The Sting" movie. Listen to the clarinet near the end of track 2. Those faint popping noises are (I think) the closing of the air holes (fingers or "lids"?) Never heard them before. Also try track 10-crank it up. THIS is heaven! Thanks, Wolfram, and everyone for converting me!
  17. Al, OK, I think I've got it now. When I read the previous posts about the trumpet blare that was eliminated by the bridge cap., I assumed it was from the squawker. In any event, the tweeters seem to be as extended as they became when I first modified my AA's to A's. Am I hearing anything different from that dip/notch/whatever at ~3,500 Hz? Was that freq. being emitted by the tweeter in the orig. AAs? This is all very confusing for non-electronic types like myself, to whom caps. block DC and transmit AC. Also, I should have written 1.0 uFd, not mFd! Makes me wonder why a Farad is so big!
  18. I just finished converting my AAs back to AAs and added the bridge cap-supposed to be 1.0 mFd, but they are unmarked. But the difference is amazing. I'll have to try re-reading all these messages, but what Hz area of the midrange is affected by this little cap? They sure seem "smoother" now.
  19. Forget the nitrous, unless you can get dental/medical grade. They put some awful-smelling sulfur compound in "car" N2O to prevent the young punks from breathing it to get high-or whatever. Anyone got one of these Bybees I can examine in a lab.? I'll find out what's inside and what isn't!
  20. Something doesn't add up here. I'd think that the Hz of those cannon shots would be down in your subwoofer range, which is self-powered. Are you sure you don't have a case of VU meter needle overshoot? I happen to have that CD, and the cannon shots don't hurt your ears because the Hz is so low. You pop on over here to Italy and I'll let you hear them at a level that your sub and amp. would probably catch fire trying vainly to reach--800 watts into 2 18" driver-dia. folded-horn enclosure of 28 cubic feet each. So don't be so quick to put down SET's-they can have real big brothers lurking behind them. My SETs are only 3.5 watts each-far more than enough w/Khorns.
  21. From two Italian words-since I'm on a very long-term assignment in Milan, Italy Bene=good sesso=sex I send my reports back to the home office using my e-mail address benesesso@XXXXXXXX. One of these days I'll have to tell the guys back there what it means.
  22. Thanks, John I've been busy reading (and rereading) the thread about Al's new efforts in building "extreme-slope" xovers for LaSs and Belles. Very interesting. So I'm wondering about a xover I use between my Khorns and Earthquake subs. It's a Dod SR 823, with 24 db/octave (an active xover). They are pretty inexpensive, working on the preamp side of things. With bi or tri-amping, would something like this work well for mid and high freq. as well as it seems to work at ~50 Hz? Benesesso
  23. Thanks,Rick I sent an e-mail to Al K., and he doesn't sell parts or kits. Looks like I'll have to try and round up all the stuff when I'm back in the US next month (Ft. Lauderdale). Benesesso
