  1. The bottom of my Tube TV is approx. 2 feet(horizontally) from the top of my Chorus II's and I have NO problems whatsoever. I think you would run into more trouble if the big speakers were closer since they have the bigger magnets. In other words....don't listen to your Chorus II's upside down!
  2. Ya know a long time ago(back in '93) when I bought my Chorus II's from Sound Advice down in South Florida, I bargained price with the sales guy for a bit. When I thought I had him down to a reasonably fair price, I told him I'd take the speakers if he'd throw in some Monster cable....otherwise, I was walkin...... It's kind of like dealing with a car dealership. I got it thrown in for no additional cost(which means he made it up in what I paid anyway) but I walked away with my speakers and cable feelin pretty good. As my friend once told me though...."if you THINK you got a good deal.....then you got a good deal!"
  3. I had the weekend to think things over and took some of your advice and solved the whole problem! I went back to Rad Shack and traded in my unused/unopened crimp-type connectors for some really nice gold plated screw-down connectors for about $2 more per pair. I finished all my connections in a matter of 15 minutes and packed up my solder equipment for the next home project! The other thing that's great about the screw-on connectors is that if you need to resize your wires or change things, you simply unscrew 'em and put 'em on whatever else you want. It was well worth the extra $12 for 6 sets. Thanks again! (and by the way...it WAS acid core solder so I got rid of that!)
  4. Since this is my own thread, I guess I can redirect just a tad. What's frustrating about this whole 10 minute job is that I purchased crimping style banana plugs. I've never had good luck with crimping style and this turned out to be no exception. I even have a great set of wire crimpers and other electrical goodies. I strip the 12 gage wire back far enough(but not too far) and slide it up into the connecter and then using the 12 gage setting on the crimpers, I smash the "you know what's" out of the thing and wah-lah.... The wire almost falls out under its own weight! That's when I resorted to solder!
  5. You guys are way too fast.... Don't you have jobs? Ha! Yeah....I'm well versed in soldering procedures(making sure the heat goes to the part and THEN to the solder) but only if things are working like they're supposed to. Okay...I'll have to check tonight and see what type of solder I'm using(I don't think it's acid core but since you asked and I don't know for sure, I'd better check). I'll try re-seating the tips and cleaning it. I want it to heat quickly so the heat doesn't transfer up the wire and start melting the insulation. Thanks! (maybe you've saved me some money)
  6. I was reading one of the other posts and it reminded me I needed to ask around to find a good soldering iron. I'm trying to solder my 12gage wires to some gold banana plug connectors and my cheesy soldering iron won't get hot enough ('cause the heat sink is too big). It's a 100 watt craftsman (as opposed to a nice Hako(sp?)). I even tinned up the tip with solder to get the heat flowing as best as it could.....to no avail..... I solder stuff about two to three times a year so I don't need some high dollar industrial machine. Does anyone know of a decent soldering iron that will generate enough heat to solder something of this size that doesn't cost a bunch? My cheesy iron has worked fine up until now so I'm asking around to see if I can just borrow one......but if I can't.......
  7. Maybe I'm missing something in the hi-tech world but we have wireless computer networks for the home now that work pretty good. Just plug a router/transmitter into your cable outlet and you can take your computer virtually anywhere in your house and get the internet. So why can't we do that with TV's? Buy a transmitter and hook it up where my cable comes into my house and then take the TV(s) anywhere I want in the house? Makes sense huh? Is the bandwidth too high or do the money-hungry cable company's just not want us doing that 'cause they'll lose too much money? I'm adding a room to my house for the kids (not an HT room) and I hate having to decide where I need my cable outlet in case I'm wrong. When they built my house 3 years ago, they also forgot to add a cable outlet in the master bedroom and now I'm stuck getting that done as well.
  8. As I've said many times before on this forum.... I got my HK7200 from J&R off the web for $900 (including shipping) and I couldn't be happier!!!! It's an awsome machine matched up with my Chorus II's(and the rest of my surround gear)..... Although I tried, I was never able to do a side by side comparison of the Yammy 2400 vs HK7200 but too many folks talked about the warmth of the HK's with the Klipsch and they are right..... I've had it now for 6 months and love it!
  9. hmmmm..... 121dB ..... Let me just tell you how loud that is.... I used to test the air horns that mount on top of the big yachts you see heading out into the ocean for corrosion and sound pressure levels(i.e. VOLUME)!!! If I remember correctly, the US Coast Guard spec said from 1 meter away they had to be a minimum of 120 dB. That is ear splitting, mind numbing madness!!!!
  10. I don't know what kind of setup/decor you have but I had to please my wife when I put my RS's in the back of the living room. It wasn't cheap but we actually found some nice 4 foot long shelves that mount right to the back wall in Pottery Barn (Restoration Hardware also had them). They come in Black, white or cherry wood stain. You can get them in 2, 3 and 4 foot lengths and I think they are 10 inches deep which is just about right for your RS's. I'll get pictures soon because I'm still working on the front of my set up but they actually look great and my wife is "most" pleased!!!! We got the cherry wood ones and they "de-modernize" the whole contemporary BLACK speaker on the wall effect. I placed them so that the speakers are about 8 feet apart. My wife was then able to decorate however she wanted on the shelves (pictures, candles, etc). She's happy so I'm happy!
  11. Ha! Nope....no connections! I'm just one of those people that believes its not "YOUR" fault that "I" got hit by a hurricane and therefore I don't EXPECT something from you. (I'm waaay over generalizing here). It's a mindset thing. I'll gladly accept help when its offered and I'll also be the first to provide help if the tides are turned but I think the attitude problems start occurring when people EXPECT government aid or EXPECT someone to provide them with a free generator and chainsaw or EXPECT the local news to be correct all the time (and be blamed/sued if they're wrong). We need to be mature enough to take responsibility for ourselves and humble enough to accept help when it's being offered..... Geese...I gotta get off my soap box here. I never intended to get this deep into it! I need to lighten up! It's just waaaay too cool to see people come together and help each other out either financially or physically or however.
  12. Some people get really mean-spirited about the whole hurricane thing and get mad at the Emergency Management Operations when they're told to evacuate. I wasn't "forced" to evacuate from my Florida home so I didn't but..... It's hit or miss and no one can guess 100%. We had quite a few folks that were told to evacuate during Frances and they didn't. Well...about 8 hours into the thick of the storm, the local news reported that they were calling the fire departments to come get them out(which they didn't). These are the same ones that get mad when they're told to evacuate. I'm sure it's a pain the tail but were supposed to be "adults" about this and realize that it's not the governments fault that a storm is coming and it's not the meteoroligists fault for not being able to pinpoint where it lands. Like I said in my other post....I've lived in FL for 37 years and I've experienced 3 semi-major hurricanes so it "is" a great place to live. That's like saying I wouldn't live in Colorado for fear of the blizzards that come.
  13. I just finished removing my plywood after Frances and I paid $17 per sheet(for 15 sheets) of 3/8" which was the only thickness they had. I thought it was a little much but Home Depot jumped thru hoops to get all of that stuff rerouted to us at the last minute so I'm okay with the price.... (Problem is....I think they were shipping it all from Alabama and now they need it).
  14. (sorry but this got a little long) This is kind of in reference to the Frances thread from earlier but since it involves hurricanes, I thinik it fits. I live in central east Florida about 7 miles inland from the beach and just sat thru about 16 hours of hurricane force winds from hurricane Frances. I had 8 family members evacuate from the barrier islands staying at my house. We sat up at night listening to the roof of my 3 year old house creek and pop and moan until we were just too tired and fell asleep but when it was all said and done, there's not a shingle missing from my roof! We were totally blessed to have come thru unscathed as many others did not. I think that if you live outside of FL, you think everyone deals with hurricanes every year and that's just not true. That's the same as saying living in California means you will deal with disasterous earthquakes on a regular basis. I have lived here on and off for 37 years and have seen 3 significant hurricanes come directly thru this area. If you do the math, that's less than one for every 10 years.....and that's why you see people lined up at Home Depot and Lowe's to buy supplies. Who wants to store plywood and shutters and generators and "panic" supplies for a storm that's going to come every 10 years. It's just not feasable for everyone. I have no place to store shutters at my home and just wasn't up for paying the $2,000 it would cost to cover all my windows so I chose to sit at Home Depot last week at 3:45 in the morning to get plywood. By the time I got there, 150 people were already ahead of me. The people at Home Depot were awseome! First of all....they were "there" at 3:45 in the morning! They pulled out the lawnchairs from the patio furniture section so we could all have seats and then they brought us all cold bottled water while we patiently waited on the next load of plywood to come in. The store manager came in at 5am and told us all that he was doing everything he could to get us plywood but it was out of his hands. They ran out of plywood within the first 120 people so I sat longer and waited for the second truck knowing it may not come but sure enough....I got my plywood and was out of there by 8:30 in the morning. Another thing to keep in mind is that the media loooooooves hurricanes because they know you people (outside of FL) will watch it like the superbowl. I can promise you that the news team will not show up at my house becuase nothing broke! Take note that they probably spend 75% or better of their newscast time on mobile home parks and beaches where the most damage is visible.....otherwise....it's not news. Don't get me wrong. The media is a great thing and badly needed (minute by minute weather reports) but at the same time, if they can't show a "stop" sign in the background whipping in the wind, they don't get viewers! Most of the time, we get so busy that it takes the big events like this to remind us of the things that really matter and sorry to say....life ain't about "stuff"..... Perspective is a great thing! That's my two cents....(and I've saved my plywood for Ivan!) Ha!
  15. Yeah....this is kind of crappy! I live about 30 miles north of where it's supposed to make landfall and that ain't a good thing! There's still three days before it hits and that's an eternity in Hurricane language but we're sure prayin it pulls north and stays out of everyone's hair! The house will get boarded up tonight but that won't make a whole lot of difference with 145mph sustained and gusts up to 170mph! This one makes Charley look like kindergarten! It's more powerful and MUCH larger. Hurricane force winds extend out 86 miles from the center so....(doing the math here)....if the storms moving at 10 mph and the eye passes right over you, that means you get to sit in hurricane force winds for 16 hours! Tropical storm winds for 30 hours!!! If it stays on this track, we're bailin and headed west and try to put some dry land between us and the eye. It sure makes life simple when you can only fit your important things in one car load.
  16. I'll have to try it in the middle and up high(pointed down like you suggested). I have an 11 foot cathedral ceiling so we bought a tall armoire to fil the space. I think it's close to 6'5" tall! First I got to get the thing though.... Thanks for you info!
  17. I actually haven't even bought it(RC3-II) yet. I'm just doing some preliminary's to figure out what I'll have to do to make this puppy work. So yes....I'll be glad to wait. That 0.0000001% will make me feel better when I bust out the Rotozip!!!!
  18. Thanks! I'll have to do some type of a layout 'cause I SURELY don't want to screw up my wife's armoire!!!!! I've already been given those instructions!!!!!
  19. I'm trying to see if the RC3-II will fit into the pocket in my armoire(before I buy it) and I can't figure out which dimension is which from all the descriptions. Is it 7.9" tall and 9" deep or 9" tall and 7.9" deep. It's too close to call when looking at the photo's but oddly enough, that extra inch may make a difference and I will have to pull out the "innerds" of the Armoire and redesign.....(which I'd rather not). ...Hey....I at least know which one is the 22.9" dimension!
  20. I'm clearly out of space in this house for full size anything! ..and when I do get to the new house, my other half will prevent me from spending any more cash on this home theater pet project of mine. I got a good deal on the RS-35's just last year(which means I spent more money on my pet project) so I won't be changing those out in any near decade! Good suggestion thoough....
  21. Yeah....I've been watching those for the past couple of weeks. One of those has been listed at $240(ish) for the last week and he didn't get a single bid(he's got 10 of 'em). He's just now dropped his price but his shipping is $35. I'm holdin out for a while longer..... I'll see what else comes along since I'm not in a rush! Thanks!
  22. Sometimes ya can't see the forest for the trees! I didn't even think about that and it should have been obvious.... Thanks for keeping my head on straight!
  23. After a few previous discussions, I was planning on getting the RC3-II for my center channel ('cause I can't afford and Academy to go with my existing Chorus II's). I know this isn't the perfect speaker for my set but that's all the budget will allow. Anyway.... I've seen on Ebay that there is a single RS-7 for sale for around the same price I'm going to pay for the RC3-II. I already have RS-35's for my rears. Am I better off by getting the RS-7 and using it for my center than going with the RC3-II? Of course....by the time I get all this figured out, the RS-7 may zoom off to well above my budget but it caught me by surprise.... Thoughts, questions, comments?????
  24. Sorry....I never was able to talk myself into trying the yammie with my Klipsch. I had heard too many things(whether true or not) about mixing the older Yammie's with Klipsch and the "highs" were undesireable. I felt secure enough (from other's comments) to jump in on the HK 7200. It's now "last years" model so it's going for cheaper however....you couldn't pry that baby from my dead hands! It sounds incredible in both music and home theater modes with my system. I think you'll get a few more options on surround and music modes but with the Yammie but for me, I end up only using 4 or 5 of them at the most anyway. That being said, my HK is warm and full(just like everyone had told me it would be) and has every bit of enough power to bust out my eardrums without distorting. It's simple to operate and comes with two remote controls (One "busy" one that hass all the setup buttons on it and the other with fewer buttons on it for daily usage(volume, source mode, on/off, bla...bla....bla....)...and oh yeah....it has its own similar version of Yamaha's YPAO. I started with it's automatic settings and then went back and fine tuned them. I paid $800 for it about 3 months ago from J&S. I think this years model is basically the same but starts to add the web features which I don't use.... ....my two cents.....
  25. I've seen this topic out there but haven't seen any solid responses. Right now, I'm seeing the RC3's going for about $50 cheaper than the RC3II's on Ebay. I tend to want to purchase the RC3II just because it's newer(assuming they learned some things and upgraded on the older model). That being said(and the add'l $50 isn't really going to kill me) what are the PRACTICAL LISTENING differences between the two(specs are too close to be a deciding factor)....? Is the RC3II the better of the two speaks?
