  1. Picked this up off Drudge Report. The lowest common denominator never cease to amaze. Is that you, Greg? 2. ---------------- On 6/14/2005 7:08:45 PM meuge wrote: I hear this argument on a weekly basis, if not more often... even sometimes from people who should know better. A few days ago, someone showed me a survey which found that >90% of those asked think that doctors are overpaid. When asked what is a fair salary a doctor should make, an overwhelming number of Americans thought that $80'000/year is the "fair" figure. Well, if they all say it, then it must be true right? Well... I did a little research, utilizing some rudimentary approximations of tax law and other figures, relating to getting a degree and practicing medicine in the state of New York. Disclaimer: I will be using the article "he", simply because it's faster to type... not because I have anything against women in medicine. Now we'll be talking about a specialist, seeking a career in non-surgical cardiology. I know a bit more about this specialty, since it's probably going to be my first choice. For those who are not familiar with the way the medical education proceeds, here's a recap: 1) 4 years of college 2) 4 years of medical school 3) 3 years of residency - after this is when an internist and family practice physicians take their license exams 4) 2-5 years of fellowship - this is where the specialists get their training... usually 2-3 years, with the 4-5 years reserved for cardiothoracic and neuro-surgery. Let's begin by assuming that a regular student loan will appreciate to 260% of the principal over a period of 20 years (a figure given to me by my friend who is an analyst at a major bank). College - $30k/year = $120k x2.6 = $312k Medical school - $50k/year = $200k x2.6 = $520k Sub-total = $832k/20years = ~$3400/month after graduating medical school (if paying even payments) ------------------------------------------------ Resident (1st year) makes $50k After taxes, (25%), he is left with $37.5k.... so he is forced to pay the $1000/month minimum payments, leaving him with $30k, and with an $820k debt at the end of the year Resident (2nd year) makes $60k After taxes, (27.5%), he is left with $43.5k and again he pays the $1000/month minimum payments, leaving him with $31.5k and a $808k debt Resident (3rd year) makes $80k After taxes, (32.5%), he is left with $40.5k and AGAIN he pays the $1000/month minimum payments, leaving him with $28.5k and a debt of $796k Hmmm - 3rd year after medical school and he makes the equivalent of $35k/year (35k - taxes = 28.5) Fellow (3rd year) makes $150k After taxes and loans, he now makes $50.7k/year... the equivalent of $62.5k/year before taxes. In New York City, a subway booth clerk will receive upwards of $60k/year + monstrous benefits after 10-15 years on the job. So after 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 3 years of residency, and 3 years of fellowship, this doctor, who is now at least 32 years old, and now has a license, makes the equivalent of what a subway booth clerk makes after spending all that time after high school selling tokens. ------------------------------------------------- I'd love to hear your take on this. ---------------- You might wanna' check your math here. It's flawed on so many levels that there's not time to pick apart each assumption. That said, I believe that doctors DESERVE to make top dollar and, as Allan pointed out, are actually UNDERPAID relative to their predecessors. This has primarily to do with the managed care system and the Drakonian rule of insurance providers and, to a lesser degree, the exorbitant cost of medical malpractice insurance. But that's our own fault. We blame the trial lawyers, but the real grifters are the citizens (or illegal immigrants...ain't America GRAND?) who retain them. Additionally, I don't believe that most doctors go into it for the money. There are easier (and faster) ways to make substantially more money. Indeed, the majority of doctors (and all of the great ones) have a passion for helping people.
  3. What a JOKE! I just signed up for the 3 day trial at Sirius. Tuned in to the "Pure Jazz" station which is defined as: "The classic sounds and styles of the jazz masters, past and present." The first song that comes up is Jamie Cullum "Twenty Something". For those who aren't familiar with this piece of crap, just imagine Justin Timberlake doing a bad Harry Connick Jr. impersonation. Gary - What station did you find that you liked? The trial only grants access to a few of the jazz stations, but what's there is absolute garbage.

  7. Okay East Coasters. I just turned off my satellite for the summer (a week too early) and an now unable to watch American Idol. I know...I'm a sad pathetic man. I figure it's already aired on the East Coast and, since I'm getting ready to go to bed, I thought one of you might admit your guilty pleasure and help me out. BTW - I'll probably get ripped for this, but I actually think Bo Bice might have the capacity to create a listenable/tolerable album. We'll see.
  8. Un-freakin'-believable! Here's the story of another innocent child killed by one of these worthless creatures. Kill 'em all AND their dope-smokin', punk thug owners. HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - A pit bill that had once bitten a person fatally mauled a young girl before being subdued by firefighters using a fire extinguisher, officials said. The girl, who was 2 or 3 years old, was pronounced dead at a hospital following the attack Tuesday at the dog owner's home, police Sgt. Dan Underwood said. Her name was not released. "The girl, her mother and at least two other people were apparently hanging out on the house's porch," Underwood said. "The homeowner apparently told them all to stay out of the house where the dog was." It was not known what provoked the dog. Huntington firefighter Jason Price said the dog was wild-eyed and the hair on the back of its neck was raised, and that it rammed the door like a bull. "Hollywood couldn't have made this dog look more evil," he said. The pit bull's owner, who also was not identified, had posted several "beware of dog" signs and was keeping the dog inside the house because it had previously bitten another person, said Debbie Young, office manager for Huntington-Cabell-Wayne Animal Control. "A lot of people are under the impression that once they put those warning signs, they are in the clear. ... They are responsible for that animal," Young said. No charges have been filed, authorities said Wednesday. Young said animal control officials will ask a judge to order that the dog be destroyed.

  12. Popeye's spicy fried chicken is the best...hands down. El Pollo Loco's chicken is better than KFC and where else can you get a churro? YUM! But I do like KFC better with respect to side dishes. Their gravy kicks ***, as do their biscuits and you gotta' love that cole slaw.

  14. ---------------- Plus plenty of packing material/soft things to go around them. ---------------- Agree. They'll fit. As long as you have the longer wheelbase T&C (LX or above) you'll be okay. It'll take some planning and creativity, but I see no problem with them fitting. Forte's aren't all that big. I'd place the top horn sections of the Klipschorns all the way up behind the front seats on their faces. Next, I'd place the bass bins laterally so that their length is running parallel to the width of the van. In other words, "width-wise" (opposite of length-wise?). Tilt the bass bins onto their backs so that the finished wood portion is tilted up. It'll take up less floor space and protect the veneer. Finally, place the Fortes all the way at the rear of the van. They can probably be placed next to eachother and standing up. Let's do the math (Moving front to back as the width of the van should not be an issue in this configuration): K-horn tops - ~20" Bass Bins - ~ 54" Fortes - ~15" ------------------- Total Length ~ 89 inches. This means that you need about 7.5 feet from front to back. If memory serves correctly, you have a little under 8 feet to work with. Is this correct? Rather than showing cubic feet, can you tell us the length, width and height. I'm guessing that it's about 7.5' x 4' x 3'.
  15. Hey Picky, Glad to hear that it went so well. Just for clarification...I actually barbeque my chicken with direct heat which is THE ultimate test of a grill's flame control. I have a classic Farberware that I use to rotisse chicken. When I bbq, I quarter the chicken and cook it directly on the grill. Just keep the heat low. No indirect cooking here. THAT is why I like my Weber. But even still...I wind up using my charcoal Weber for chicken most of the time just 'cuz NOTHING tastes better. I also use the charcoal Weber when I cook nice cuts of meat like bacon-wrapped-filets and rib-eyes. But for convenience, nothing beats gas. My new favorite quick dinner idea is to get yourself some thinly sliced pork steaks. (I usually pick 'em up for about $2.00/lb) I rub them with Sesame Oil and season them liberally with Kosher salt and paprika and then give them a gentle sprinkling of cayenne pepper. Oohh baby, that's good eatin'...and on the cheap. Keep those grill stories comin'.
  16. That's kinda' what I thought. WOW! My hat's off to anyone who can work those kind of hours. I do offer this perspective: My father is a retired pharmacist and I would dare say that MOST Union retirees are much better off than he. He had to go to college (5 years) and paid his own way through a very expensive private university. His father was, of all things, a union member (longshoreman) but was unable (and perhaps a little unwilling) to pay for my dad's education. As a pharmacist, he went from owning his own store to working for a small independent chain to finally working for a large corporation. All the while, he worked 12+ hour days, including evenings and weekends, and was on his feet the entire day. There was no pharmacists' Union, so he worked without breaks and with surprisingly poor benefits. The best working conditions were when he worked for the large chain store. The moral of the story? I guess I can see both sides. I like the idea of protecting workers from abuses. I don't agree, however, with the socialist structure of Unions. Let's not forget, however, that all unions are NOT created equal making this topic less cut-and-dried. Some unions are particularly heavy-handed and out of control, while others do what they're supposed to. I think the California Prison Guards union is COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL! They are power-run-amuck. Do some research. They OWN the booming prison industry and THEY MAKE THE RULES. And make no mistake...it's a business. I have a friend who was a California prison guard. He retired last year at age 51 with full benefits FOR LIFE and 87% of his last years' salary (about $95K) FOR LIFE with CPI adjustments along the way.
  17. ---------------- I can visit my employers site and and access their info regarding my work history. Their records show I worked 429 days last year. I would have worked more but I was sickly last year. ---------------- I'm not trying to be a smart-a$$. Aren't there 365 days in a year? Does this mean that with overtime, you worked an equivalent of 62 days overtime? (actually quite a bit more when you account for scheduled days off, but you get my point)
  18. ---------------- Better than Carlos Santana? Never listened to him to speak of as I can't stand his old hits except for Raspberry Beret and Purple Rain. Maybe I better give the guy another chance. ---------------- For clarification: I'm not a big fan of most of his commercial releases, but I do appreciate his musicianship. Unlike most "entertainers", Prince is a brilliant song-writer and a phenomenal musician.
  19. Wow! I just flipped on the TV a few minutes ago to find the NAACP Image Awards. I tuned in right in the middle of a set with Price and Sheila E. Luckily I have TIVO, so I was able to rewind and play it from the beginning. OMG! The band was smokin' and Prince was showing off his musical chops. He sang, danced, played a bass solo (funk) and a blistering latin guitar solo ala Carlos Santana, but WAY better. Sheila E. played an unbelievable solo on the timbales. It was truly a delight. One of the finest performances I've seen in a LONG time. Anyone else catch it?
  20. Glad I could help. Check Craigslist again for the tweeter(s). I'm not a Cornwall guy, but I would surmise that they use the same tweeter as LaScala Belle and K-Horn. K-77?? If so, there's one (or a pair) on Craigslist for like $40, brand new in sealed package. How's that for goin' the extra mile!! Let us know how it works out.
  21. From Craigslist - Located in the East Bay Area - Vallejo I have a pair of the Legendary Klipsh "Cornwall" Loudspeakers for sale. I bought these Speakers New From A Stereo Shop in Sacramento in 1984 at the age of 23 and proceded to "Rock the Nation" with them for many years. Now I find myself a bit older and a little tight on funds so, sadly, it's time to say good bye to them. When new, these speakers came unfinished with an ugly one piece grill that was badly outdated style wise in my opinion. Ugly as they were after listening to them, I had to have em'.....after a few weeks of steady rock concert decible play with these Bad Boys...........I shut em down and gave em' a makeover. Sanded and finished the exterior wood, added a piece of trim wood to the front of each to add beauty and Banished the ugly one piece grills for life and replaced them with a new two piece style made from 3/4" quarter round lumber on three sides of each and a little left over trim board used on the front. Finally covering them with some "Radio Shack" speaker cloth, I had a set of hard rockin', Bad *** speakers that were also beautiful. I almost cried. I hate to let em' go and hope that if someone decides to give them a new home that they will use them for what they were designed for. High Volume and Big Sound. Paid $1007.00 for the pair in 84' and would like to ask $500 for the pair in 05'. Other offers will be considered. Please call Barry anytime. 707-590-3752
  22. ---------------- On 3/22/2005 8:42:43 AM picky wrote: Just one thing I wanted to ask of gullahisland: I would be interested to find out what sort of burner configuration your grill that you returned had. I believe the Jenn Air that I bought is closer to that of a Weber. Since we've both owned Webers, we know that the burners run linearally beneath the grill's "flavorizing bars" as Weber calls them. The burners on my new grill are much the same, except Jenn Air prefers to call them "flame tamers", and they are a bit wider than Weber's. Also, did your grill have the rear infrared burner for use with the rotisserie? Or did you have to use the burners below the cooking grate to heat the rotisserie? ---------------- The burners did run in a similar configuration to the Weber and they did have a "shield" that was reportedly designed for reducing flareups. Also, it did have the infrared burner mounted on the back side of the grill, so you didn't need to run the burners. The problem with the design (as far as I could tell) was that, unlike the Weber, there was only one layer of protection between the burners and the grill. The Weber gives you a shield over the burners as well as another layer of flavorizer bars. But that's not even the biggest design flaw. The BIG problem was the way that drippings were captured and drained. On the Costco unit, there was a large stainless steel tray that was accessible from the back. It gradually sloped off to one side (the right as you face the grill) and had a channel down the middle where it finally emptied into a drip pan. The tray was too close to the burners and caused incredible flare-ups. Think about the design of the Weber. The bottom of the bbq is very DEEP and very STEEP. There's no room for a fancy "storage compartment" underneath the grill. The drippings get FAR away from the flame in a hurry. Not the prettiest design, but it sure works great. I'm not trying to rain on your parade. I'm just curious to see how it works from the perspective of a former Weber owner. I suppose if I'd never owned a Weber, I wouldn't have known any better and might very well have been satisfied. One final note. I also found the stainless steel to be a burden. It looked great in the store, but it showed every fingerprint, splatter and smudge. And it was virtually impossible to clean without major streaks. I had to use "Barkeepers Friend" or stainless steel polish to make it look nice. And that kinda' defeats the purpose of having a gas grill in the first place - CONVENIENCE. The red enamel finish on my Weber is easy to clean. A quick spray of Windex and it looks great.
  23. But, fini... This one is VERY, VERY heavy whereas the one on Craigslist is just VERY heavy. So...all else being equal, I'd buy this one and provide my own drama.
  24. Beautiful work, Jordan. As always, you continue to raise the bar for quality craftsmanship. I really need to get down your way to give them a listen. Little do you know that Patrick and I are planning to converge at your place when he takes delivery of the Fortes. We'll supply the food and drink. You provide the TUNES!
