  1. Wouldn't Moody Blues, "Days of Future Passed" be worthy of naming? Although not necessarily my first pick (burnt out on a number of the tracks), I belive it was a fairly well reviewed release. I guess it depends on how we're defining "best"?
  2. Colt's going down on Sunday! Of course, as a die hard Bengals fan (my fingers still want to type Bungals), the truth be told, there is a lot of nervousness. 14 years (or what ever) of ineptitude is hard to overcome without some gut reaction of disbelief. Seems to me it's easier for non-Bengal fans to appreciate them than long time fans. I think non Bengal fans can see them for what they are and long time fans have that "omg, are they going to crush my hopes again" fear.
  3. My wife hates my LaScalas too. I've had them for 25 years and her for only 13 so she "knows her place" lol (btw, I'll deny ever having said/implied that[A]) That said, she detests them being visible, detests them being next to the wall, detests them being away from the wall (ad nausium) Soooooooooo, what do I do but bring some Khorns home [] Although she still says "Big speakers are passe'", she has to admit that they are a LOT tidier than the LaScalas (disappear into the room more). Soooooooooooooooo If you got the room... perhaps toss some Khorns into the corners. They are a LOT more managable in the room (looks wise) to my wife than the LaScalas are. That will also set the precident for your wife that she needs to be careful when she tells you to do something. You just might do it and STILL be able to have your cake to eat. [A]
  4. My HT (not currently setup anymore) was used for watching tv/news/movies. It also was used for watching concerts & music in general. Nothing like the Simpsons on Heritage []
  5. I live out in the sticks & don't have access to cable, dsl and the ISDN I DO have is REALLY slow (I'm outside limits of ISDN too but they had to provide me with it) So, given the choice of nothing or Directv, I took the DTV! The NFL package is kinda nice too... for the last 6 years of having it, I've been able to watch my Bengals suck. Now however, I'll get to watch them whoop up on Indy this week!!! (sorry all you Indy fans [] ). If it helps you Indy fans, I'm in Knoxville & had the pleasure of watching Peyton here at UT and hope he does well AFTER getting schooled by the Bengals!
  6. [:$] Just always curious what the "other side" is doing. Other than my EV's (which I bought first), I've been 100% faithful to my LaScalas since 1980 and happy with my Khorn additions to the family, even if the wife isn't. []
  7. Perhaps "Loving you" by Minnie Ripperton? That final "ewwwwwwwwwww" that's about 15 octives high would... well, I don't know what it would do... but what ever it WOULD do, it wouldn't be pretty. I'd contemplate the Queen idea, Blue man, Bad Company, The Who perhaps I'm dating myself
  8. The following is from the standpoint of understanding the concept as opposed to thinking it really applies to me. I might be able to make a connector converter that is RCA on one side (to connect to my Peach) and balanced on the other side to connect to amp (I don't own this amp, I was just looking at it) and that scenario 'might' work sufficiently. I could also take the RCA out of the Peach, connect it to a transformer that is specifically made for this purpose. The output of the transformer is a balanced connector that I could then take to the same amp. There are no downsides of using balanced connectors, other than perhaps the challange of wiring them right and the cost of acquisition. There are some gains in balanced connectors, those gains MIGHT be perceptable and if the system is good enough as is, then those gains might not be perceptable? If the distance between the Peach & the amp is long enough, then the balanced connectors will allow you to make that connection with zero, or minimal sound degradation, especially when compared to the sound the RCA connector might have under similar circumstances. Most preamp manufacturers don't put balanced outputs on their amps for cost considerations. (I say that because I'm inferring that balanced is always better than RCA, but cost more)
  9. someone asked Q: how are the surrounds on woofers.. and will bose still fix these if necessary. and his answer is/was A: The woofers work, but could easily be replaced with newer woofers--almost a pop-out, pop-in replacement. These speakers were built by Dr Bose before Bose Corp days, so they are not affiliated with the company. Now does that sound suspicous or wha? I'd bet if they were really done before Bose Corp, that perhaps the Bose (insert registered tradmark here) would WANT them back as part of their history??? I'll bet they've never heard of them.
  10. Notice the backside pics... seem kind of bashed up to anyone? Looks to me like it has been dropped, kicked or other

  12. Was just wondering In the heyday of Heritage or other lines that were built in Hope... how did they decide what to make on a given day? What I mean is, is the place large enough where they had a Khorn assembly line, LaScala assembly line, Belle, Heresy.....and they all pumped out units on a daily basis Or perhaps, did they build Khorns for a week & get that out of the way for while, then move to next speaker for week to get that inventory up before moving onto the next ? Yes I'm at work, bored (stuck sitting here for an hour while I wait for someone) and my mind is wondering
  13. Hey Doc... It's the Mc-352 that has the balanced inputs. I'm not familar with them nor their benefits other than what I've read here. I own a Peach which has RCA outputs. []
  14. Thanks Bruce... so it's fair to say that if the two are side by side then I can just get some kind of adapter and forget about the rest of the stuff? As a followup, if I for some reason decide to seperate them by 30' (which wouldn't be impossible in my basement though unlikely) then I might want to look at creating a balanced signal at the Peach end of things (output of peach into transformer & output of transformer which is now balanced... to the balanced input of amps 30' away) and then perhaps enjoy the benefit of a balanced line?
  15. Well, if he shows up and I'm not around it only means I'm having breakfast with my family before hitting road back to Knoxville (currently in Atlanta). Follow up question If something is balanced from preamp to power amp VERSES using RCA from pre to power... if the RCA connectors aren't as good (in an absolute sense) as the balanced, dont we have a "weak link" thing here? ie, if I have a Peach with RCA outputs & convert to balanced input on the amp side, does the balanced "improve" anything over the RCA (I'd doubt it)? So, aren't I going to have the same net end result as just using the RCA's? (it's good to know you can convert over though)
  16. Noticed a McIntosh amp other day that was "fully balanced" and had balanced inputs. (MC-352) If someone acquires something that requires balanced inputs, can you get an adapter to switch it over to rca? What are the benefits of a balanced input? If you DO convert to a balanced input from RCA, do you lose any of the benefits that a "fully" balanced system might have?
  17. Was talking to guy other day & he said the perfect amp one could have with Khorns is a MC-275. Be that as it may, I got to wondering about that verses 2 mono MC-75's... Forget cost/space/wife/other... From a pure sonic viewpoint, anyone care to give general reasons why mono's might be (or are?) better than a stereo unit? I can think of perhaps better seperation & that's about it. When I was once at Statement Audio talking to Tom Manley, he made the comment to me that by having a stereo unit "if one channel needs a bit more power while the other one doesn't, then the power supply can move more over to that channel" (or some parahprase of that) I kind of raised an eyebrow on that logic but A) I'm clueless, He's a fellow Buckeye (although from Cleveland area lol) C) Didn't notice too many monoblocks for sale so perhaps he was trying to frame what he has to sell in its most favorable light... btw, the conversation the other day as referenced above was NOT with Manley. The visit with him was probably over a year ago. (didn't want to infer anything) so are there numerous benefits of monoblocks or is it just more to take care of & maintain?
  18. Dee, you're in my thoughts & prayers. (and in the thoughts & prayers of those crappy amps you dumped off on me [6]) Now git your 'hiney' (had to constrain myself) well & back on track. [A] Richard
  19. Seems Born2RockU had an issue with him too... I presume that's OUR Born2RockU?

  21. Thanks for the input. As an aside, I too had a pair of Wrights (that I bought from Danny) & put them side by side with the OTL's (Transcendent) that I bought from Daddy Dee. For my ears, the OTL's won. If you've not heard them, you might give it a whirl (although I had to bridge them to get the 4 wpc as the standard flaver just didn't have enough oomph for me).
  22. Thanks for all your thoughts & comments, I'll look into the other amps. I DO like the idea of a tuner and have been contemplating getting one so the HK might kill 2 birds. As for John, nope, no relation! Interestingly enough, I was working in retail a lifetime ago & when I took their check & checked drivers license... their name was Albright too... was a weird feeling. You don't bump into many of "us" too often. John is about 90 miles away, due south on I-75. I'm a transplant from Ohio. I'll claim to be his long lost relative though... if it helps me mooch his stuff [6]
  23. Ok...bear with me here a minute... <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> First disclaimer: I know its over kill, I know its not necessary. Second disclaimer: Ive got a 4wpc SE-OTL so I KNOW its going to be hard to find something that sounds more lush. Third disclaimer: This isnt for sounding lush although if it DOES then Ive found my nirvana! Im still trying to find a high powered amp that will sound great, low noise & have a lot of headroom. This isnt any trashing of low powered or average powered amps since Im VERY content with the sound the SE-OTLs put out...until I want to do some wall shaking. Ok, I say all the above to just try to be sure were past any wonderings as to what/why and perhaps just get to the answers. I found these on ebay over the weekend: (found 3 & one is already over so Ive deleted that one) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5827047706&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5827047706&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT I then went to Roger Russels website to try to learn more about these & found out he had a contact Roger button... so I did and this is what I said. Hi Roger, I hope you don't mind me being so bold as to send this to you so I'll get right to the point. I live in Knoxville (So can go by DeWicks easily for their refurb stuff if need be) I have a pair of Klipschorns. I have a pair Transcendent SE-OTL (bridged to 4 wpc) amps I use for "luscious listening" I want a high powered amp for when I want the Khorns to shake the walls. I don't care if it's 200 or 500 wpc...in fact I'm probably more interested in the 500 just for kicks (not literally, just making the point of my predisposition of high power). I'm intrigued on getting a McIntosh... I currently have a dbx BX3 MK-III that I got off ebay and not sure I have gotten rid of the "what about a Mac" feeling, so I know until I get or try a Mac I'll be bothered. That means I'll end up getting a McIntosh so I may as well not fight it & try to get the right/best one. If it matters, I'm using a Juicymusic "Peach" preamp On ebay there is currently a MC-2002, MC-2600, MC-2300 Again, I'm looking for something with a LOT of head room but I don't know anything about McIntosh nor those autoformers and if they'd be of help with my Klipschorns. If you have any thoughts you'd be willing to share on which amp might be my "right" choice, I'd appreciate that. If you get flooded with this stuff and don't respond, I respect that too. Best Regards Richard D. Albright Knoxville, TN This is his response to me: Richard: The best of the three amplifiers you mention is the MC2600. I used these in the lab to test the systems we designed. I never did drive them to full power but that reserve was always there. The 2600 is heavy, though. Roger Unfortunately, he misunderstood my question a touch. What I really meant to be asking him was which McIntosh amp (even if not mentioned above) would be a best pick for Khorns Soooooooo, anyone here have any thoughts as to the amp, how good these would mate with Khorns, how quiet they are... More importantly, any idea of an APPROXIMATE market value for the MC2600? Is this thing likely to go for $7,000 or is $3,500 reasonable? (just making up numbers to make the illustration) This IS from the proverbial horses mouth, so Im open to who thinks what/why this amp might be a great (or bad) idea. Isnt it typically said that more drivers get fried from using a too LOW powered amp rather than one with too much?
  24. I gave my vinyl player to my sister....had too much wow & flutter []
