  1. Hmm... I wonder how much of an improvement I'd get (if any) by going with two of the T-2000 SVC 15's over my current Dayton DVC 15's. Any idea DrWho? (sorry, I don't have the time right now to run the #'s myself, gotta get to work) [] Thanks
  2. I'm not going to get into another stinking argument. If it is in PAL, you CAN NOT VIEW IT ON A NTSC MACHINE, PERIOD! What part of "This is one of the fun things I have to deal with almost every day at work" did you not understand?! I have been dealing with video transfers every day of the week for 4 years now, and even on professional machines, they will not work unless you have a PAL conversion deck. Did it ever occur to you that the tapes you were renting while in Japan were already in NTSC? Guess what, they were because Japan uses NTSC as their standard format. ---------------------------------------- After I thought about it more, I realized that Japan was NTSC, not PAL. I just got done dealing with a bunch of tapes from China and Hong Kong about 2 weeks ago, and for whatever reason I was thinking that they were from Japan when I first answered seti's question. So, to answer your question correctly seti, YES, you can view that tape from Japan without any problems.
  3. In some recent and past threads, I have seen mention of putting a 20 ohm resister across taps 0 and 5 on the T2A autoformer. I'm just curious as to what this does. Also, I believe that other component values are shuffled around a bit when adding that resister. And one more thing. I have a few wild ideas for some near future projects (something I don't think has been tried yet), and was wondering how high the K-33E, or in this case, Bob's CT1526 can be crossed over at and still produce a nice clean sound. I know it runs out of steam at 1500Hz, but has anyone ever used a crossover point of 800Hz or higher? And what frequency range should I keep away from as far as having a crossover point going from the woofer(s) to the midrange? If things go well, I might be doing something in the lines of a 3-1/2 way design. Any thoughts?
  4. If it's in PAL, which it most likely is, he will NOT be able to view it. You will only get snow or a blue screen.
  5. Most likely it will be in PAL format. You will have to have it transferred over to NTSC. The only problem with that however is that it will be copywritten, which means no one will make the transfer for you unless you have some kind of written Copy Write release form from the company who oroginally recorded and produced the tape. (which can be a difficult task in itself) This is one of the fun things I have to deal with almost every day at work. [:|]
  6. Hmm... Sounds like the original caps need to be replaced at least. My CWs sounded the same way as you described until I replaced the stock caps with new ones. It was a much needed improvement! []
  7. You could get a Crown XTi 1000 like I'm getting. It has a DSP that for crossover, paragraphic EQ, limiting, delay, and a subharmonic synthesizer. At least that way, you would have an amp and crossover all in one. (6, 12, 18 or 24dB per octave selectable) Mine will be here Thursday. [H]
  8. Despite your butchered syntax, it is apparent that you equate answering a person's question with "hiding." Folks that use Crowns don't usually feel the need to put down other amps. We just use what WE think is best for US. No need to thump our chests on a Klipsch forum, or be an obnoxious ***. I would guess that NOBODY who has thoughtfully chosen a Crown amp as a solution to their needs would think of using Krell. Not that the Krell products are Krapp, they just are different answers to different questions. So, for you, they may be the "answer." For me, they beg the question.... Since you have added nothing to this thread but your obtuse and irrellevant rambling, I respectfully suggest that you continue to enjoy your Krell in whatever manner pleases you. Kindly remove your head from the firm grip of your clenched sphincter. It will be much easier to hear. You have a nice day!!!! [] To TheWOOFER... Not to mention that steamer asked about an AMP for his SUBS in the SUB section of the forum. I mean, did you expect us to answer his subwoofer amp question in a totally different area of the forum?! [:|]
  9. Finally, you got away from that stupid MDF, gawd I hate that stuff. Why do you hate MDF so? It's a much better material to build loudspeaker enclosures with than plywood. Sure, it might be ugly, but it's definately more sound.
  10. Thanks. I'm sure it will be fine. I mean, come on, it's a Crown! [] I was actually considering the XLS 402 or 602, but went for the XTi instead. My main reason for going with it is because of the built-in DSP. It's cheaper to get this amp instead of one of the other ones along with a Behringer FBD. See, in my room I have this nasty +10dB peak of about 40Hz, so hopefully I can use the paragraphic EQ to tone that down some. Plus that built-in limiter might become useful as well. We'll see.
  11. LOL. Yeah, me too. If it doesn't, I'll be the first to know. []
  12. Out of pure boredom, I have been looking through a few general Google searches under "recording studio", "recording booth", "studio equipment", etc, etc, etc... I even sat down for a little bit in front of my two CD racks to look up the "technical specs" that some of the CDs include in the CD sleeves. What I have seen mostly are Hafler, Bryston, Threshold, Lexicon, QSC, Crown, Carver Pro, Sampson and Mackie. Not a single one anywhere (whether on my CDs or on the internet) did I see any studio using Krell amplification. And for something that has nothing to do with the subject at hand... Wendy Carlos uses 4 Klipschorns and 4 Cornwalls, 2 Velodyne ULD-12 Servo subs, 2 TOA Model P-75D amps, 4 Marantz A1 amps, and an Onkyo A-8150 amp. Here's a couple pics of the 4 Cornwalls she uses...
  13. BTW, Al K's ESN networks are much more complicated devices with a lot more components. If I were you, I'd ask Al "if" and "how" the crossover point could be changed. Hopefully, it won't be too difficult. []
  14. In order for me to change my tweeter's crossover point from the stock Type B's 6000Hz, I had to add another 2uF cap to the existing 2uF cap, effectively making it 4uF which lowered the crossover point down to roughly 4500Hz for use with Bob's CT125 tweeters. Here's a picture of the stock (with new replacement caps - left network) to the modded network with the lower 4500Hz crossover point (right network). You'll also notice an extra .500uH inductor on the right network. That was installed to roll off the squawker at 4500Hz on its top end instead of letting it roll off naturally.
  15. You've had pretty much every configuration of these- have you ever done a side-by side comparison of each? I kinda did a side-by-side. Once I completed the first Pyle horn mod, I connected everything and fired up the system. The left CW was running stock except for the CT125, 4.5kHz cutoff for the tweeter and 4.5kHz roll off for the squawker. The right CW was running the same except for the added Pyle horn, top hat and the 400Hz cutoff for the squawker. The midrange was fuller and more open, with less honk and shrill, but the honk and shrill was still noticable. Then once I did the next and final mod of switching over to the 511B horn, I did a small comparison again. And again, I completed the first 511B mod to the right channel first while leaving the left channel running the Pyle horn. This time, the Altec offered much more detail and space, as well as a warmer, even fuller midrange with just about as little honk as possible and NO shrill at all. The 511B makes instruments and vocals sound very real and natural sounding whiling adding just the slightest bit of extra oomph on output. OR at least, that's what my inital thought was. Now it seems that the output is just right and blends seamlessly with the CT125 and K-33. As you can see in the plot below, the response seems to be rather smooth from about 300Hz on up. In fact, Dean says that the 7uF cap bank that I'm running on the K-55V is actually allowing the driver to run down closer to 300Hz than the projected 400Hz. My guess is that the 511B is loading the driver rather well down that low as can be seen by the little boost in the 250-500Hz range. Now keep in mind that the K-33 is running a little lower at about 437Hz due to the added 68uF cap. All in all, I think the sound is excellent and miles above and beyond the stock CW!
  16. All I can say is that switching out the K-600 squawker horn to either the Pyle and/or K-400, or even better yet, the Altec 511B horn turns the Cornwall into an entirely different (better) beast.
  17. Well I just bought the XTi 1000 yesterday from Parts Express for subwoofer duty, so I'll let you all know how it turns out.
  18. Throughout this thread, I have seen people thinking that the SUV is Jim's, and now that Jim "tweaked" the tailpipe... Like I said in the first post, it is NOT Jim's SUV, it is our "other brother's" SUV. Jim did not tweak the fender or exhaust, I did. And yes, that jerk was flying at full tilt when he rammed us. I'm actually amazed that his little Ford Escort started back up and he was able to drive the darn thing off.
  19. Well, I bit the bullet and bought the XTi 1000 from Parts Express. I figured if it turns out that I don't like it, I can just send it back and get the XLS 602 or something. Don't worry, I'll let you know what happens once I get it. Thanks for the info though! []
  20. Also, what about the Behringer Reference Amplifier A500? It's rated at 500 watts mono @ 8 ohms, +/- 1dB from 10Hz - 25kHz, and fanless. plus it also uses RCA connectors, as well as TRS and XLR. And after thinking about it, being that my sub is so efficient, I may not need 1000 watts. it gets pretty darn loud as is at only 180 watts.
  21. Yeah, I saw that thread but didn't want to hijack it, so I just posted about it here. So what is it about the older CE line that put you off so much? And yes, I plan on probably putting it in my bedroom. I'm still not 100% sure if I'll get it though, or that Samson Servo 600 eventhough it's 400 watts less and fanless. Unless there's another amp you can think of that will give me a little more oomph for about the same price or less and possibly without a fan.
  22. Alright, so back on the subject of my subwoofer, I'm looking at buying a quality amp for it. I'm seriously thinking about buying a Crown amp. It's the XTi 1000. I'll be using it at 8 ohms bridged mono for 1000 watts to the sub. Now my main question is, is this amp limited on the low end of the freq range? Everywhere I look at in the specs, it only mentions +/- 0.25dB from 20Hz - 20kHz at 1 watt. And since my sub produces substantial output down to 14Hz, I don't want to use an amp that can't dig that low on its own. Or should I not be concerned with this? I guess what the "+/- 0.25dB" means that the amp is almost perfectly flat between 20Hz - 20kHz, and is probably only down -0.50dB at most by 10Hz or so, if that. Any thoughts on this guys? DrWho maybe, since you seem to really like and know a lot about Crown amps? Thanks, Charles
  23. Yeah, looks like a minor parking-lot type of hit. From your description, it seemed much worse. Poor guy probably didn't realize he even hit you, from the look of the pics. [:^)] Don't show the pics when you sue for whiplash........ [] Poor guy?!?!?! WTF?!?! Nevermind, I'm not even going to get into it with you. I just consider the source...
  24. Alright, my brother has an 2001 American SUV which has an all steel frame and bumper and weighs a little 4000lbs, plus a full tank of fuel (about 160lbs), plus the 3 of us (about another 650lbs). That's roughly 4800lbs that was fully stopped with the brakes engaged, that was pushed 15 feet down the road. We have the 4 tire marks on the pavement to prove it. It was a kid about 180lbs, in a 1998 Ford Escort that weighs about 2400lbs that hit us and pushed us that 15 feet, with a weak unibody and a plastic bumper, AND considering the fact that the cops told us that his car was totalled! Plus, judging from seeing him coming right at us in the mirror, and the speed limit on that street is 35mph. Oh, and did I mention that not once did he hit his brakes?! Where he hit us is exactly where the steel bumper bolts directly to the steel frame of the SUV with 6 very large bolts. The damage to that guy's car was pretty severe, with part of my bro's rear bumper stuck through the front of his car that he took with him as he ran away. The rear fender is buckled on the SUV also. So yeah, I'd say the guy was doing at least 35mph, if not 40mph when he hit us.
