  1. You may be able to find a pair of SF-3 on the used market. Those would seem to be the ideal match.
  2. Ahhhh... The patience of the young! She pulled the trigger on the Cinema 6's. "Sweet talked the guy into $1000 even with tax included." When I talked to her on the phone she said she was "doing the happy dance with them all spread out on the floor!" I am about to head over to loan her my old Pioneer VSX-452 Receiver so she can listen to them untill she saves some cash to buy something of her own. Anything special to keep in mind as to speaker placement? I am just planning to move them around till they sound right for now.
  3. Computers I have No problem with, but she is not interested in that route. She found a Cinema 6 system complete for $945 (new) locally. Good deal? Her first choice was "5 speakers like your's" (Heresies!), but when she checked on cost she decided against that option! lol
  4. well it went something like this... I had just had the speed limiter in my Buick Turbo-T removed and wanted to make sure I got my money's worth! So... a friend and I headed out to a mostly deserted stretch of interstate and away we went. I was at about 135 when I passed a State Trooper with another car pulled over. Figuring that with that kind of jump he wouldn't stand a chance I stayed on it. Never saw lights in my rearview or anything. a little while later this helocopter buzzes me and hits me with the spotlight from hell so I pull over and wait. At that point I knew I was in the deep darks! They don't take to kindly to having to call in air support! A minute or so later, cruisers from 3 jurisdictions come screaming up and one very large, very upset state trooper drags me out of my car and slams me face down on the pavement! I went to jail, car was impounded, friend had to call for a ride home from the nearest payphone! I am not sure how fast I actually went, but they said the chopper paced me at 155. The end result was a felony and 5 misdemenors, plea-barganed down to 3 misdemenors which resulted in loss of liscense for a year and around $3700 in fines, court costs, and attorney fees. Youth, ignorance, and horsepower can be an expensive combination
  5. Hey guys. My stepdaughter has her first place of her own and would like to set up a decent Home Theater. The room she has available is 11x14x8 and she only plans to have one piece of furnature, a Loveseat. Her starting point is a Pioneer DV-578A DVD player her mom and I bought her and she needs to aquire everything else. Anything we should keep in mind while deciding what to buy? None of us have any HT experience so feel free to make suggestions based on that fact. Her budget is still a bit in flux, but she plans to do this a little at a time anyway. She would rather save a bit longer for good equipment than go for instant gratification, so that is good. Her first purchase is going to be a flat screen TV of some sort. I will know more about her budget at that point. Thanks for any guidence you might provide!
  6. Take it from someone who once got a speeding ticket for 155 in a 55, they will eventually catch you! [] It was a sheriff's dept chopper that did me in. Once he let me know he was there I just shut it down and waited for the cars to get there.
  7. Well. I talked her out of the belt sander idea. (actually, I think the damage she did to the shipping crate did!). She has now spent several hours removing loose veneer and filling all the gouges with wood filler, and they are starting to look a lot better. All she needs to do is perfect her corner restoration technique and do some finish sanding, and they will be ready for new veneer.
  8. Any experience with the Music Hall cd25.2? I can get one brand new for ~$540, but I haven't had the chance to hear one.
  9. The Bussmann GBB-3 Fuses we use at work are almost $7.50 each. I believe you can order them from http://sacramentoelectronics.com/index.html.
  10. I am sure this has been covered, but the search function is not working out for me this morning! I have been discussing my subwoofer project with a guy at work tonight and he asked me if I know the crossover frequencies for they E-2 Crossovers in my Heresies. I don't, so here I am! Anyone know? Thanks!
  11. Oops. Guess I should read the whole thread before responding. I agree with what Gary said. lol
  12. I don't think this is gonna work! Measure very carefully before driving 5 hrs! We had trouble getting Heresys in a Prius a few weeks ago and they are smaller than your Chorus II's!
  13. Thanks for the info Tom. I am just providing technical support, tools, and working space. She is doing the work. What ever I tell her, she will proably end up doing it the way she wants anyway! (ever tried reasoning with a 19 y/o girl?) [] I just don't want to see her ruin her speakers! She spent an hour with the belt sander today practicing on some old shipping crates and is actually pretty steady. I just need to get some new belts.
  14. Hey guys. I have offered to help a friend of my stepson refinish some garage sale Heresies that she uses in her dorm room. The factory oiled walnut veneer is completely trashed. There are several gouges all the way through to the ply. Is it possible to strip the veneer off? Af first we were thinking fill all the gouges, sand smooth and paint, but after reading posts on here about veneering, you guys have ruined her! Her plan is to get out the ole belt sander and just let'er rip till she has removed all the veneer. I guess it will work, but I wanted to chech with you guys and see if there is other alternatives. If worse comes to worse with the belt sander o' doom, we can always go back to fill and paint! [] On a side note, the drivers in the pair are completely different! She doesn't care as all she wants right now is Loud and they do that just fine! [Y]
  15. I am officially out. I just got put back on nights and will now have to work that weekend. [:'(]
  16. Looks like a good idea, but I sure hate to see people parting out these great old speakers.
  17. any of you knowledgeable types wanna post a short tutorial on this subject for us newbies? ie. equipment needed, standard techniques, etc. I am getting interested in building my own subs and would love to be able to adjust placement and tuning based on actual test readings to compare to what I hear. Unfortunately, 27 years in my line of work has taken a toll on my hearing so I need all the help I can get sometimes! []
  18. A couple of 1350 Ton Centrifugal Chillers and a seriously large House Vacuum system plus associated pumps and piping noise.
  19. Apparently I am not the only person working nights! The guy with the sub just responded to my email. He said that he didn't use WinISD, he used an online calculator on a car audio site. Using that he came up with a Vb of 3.866 cu.ft. a Fb of 29.94 Hz, and a F3 of 31.79 Hz. Using those numbers he came up with the 6 7/8" length for a 4" diameter port. He also considered two 3" diameter ports, 8 7/8" long. He said the box is slightly oversized to allow for the space consumed by the plate amp he was planning to use and internal bracing. Makes sense to me, make sense to you? Thanks!
  20. I did some searching on the net and found an online WinISD Applet. I plugged in the T/S numbers and came up with a Vb of 3.24 cu. ft. and a Fb of 32.16 Hz. I pluged those into the Vent Calculator applet on the same site and came up with a single port of 4" diameter being 7.14" long. I guess the 6 7/8" was a bit short. I will ask him how he arrived at that length. Also, the box volume of 3.24 cu. ft. is a bit smaller than the 3.98 cu. ft. he figured.
  21. More info... He offered to sell me the unassembled box he was building for it for an additional $20, but the numbers mean nothing to me, and I have no idea how he came up with them. Here is what he emailed me: All 3/4" MDF, front is 2 pieces thick (1 1/2"). Internal box dimensions 18"x17"x22.5". One flared 4" port, 6 7/8" long. One internal brace 3/4"x1"x17". All MDF cut to size but no holes cut yet. Does any of that add up to a decent sounding sub? I figure even I can glue it all together for a quick fix (while I am waiting on my other subs to be built), but don't want something that will sound like cr*p! Thanks for putting up with the newbie questions! Oh, and if I do build it, how much power (amp) will it need?
  22. I guess I should add that this is just something that I thought might be a good deal and would stash away and use for something later. Not for use in the subs I am planning for use with my Heresies.
  23. Hey guys. A guy at work has a Dayton ST305-8 12" Subwoofer listed on the for sale board for $55. I called him and he says that it is new. Said he changed his mind and went with a different driver instead. This seems like a good price based on what they sale for at PE, but is it agood sub? I told him I would take it, but he said if I change my mind this weekend I can back out. Thanks!
  24. I currently have my Heresies about 5' out from the back wall and almost 4' in from the side walls. A few minutes ago I was in the corner behind one of them chasing a kitten who looked to be on a mission to claw anything he could find and I noticed that the bass level was a Lot higher than out in the room. Would I see improvement in my listening position by using some sort of bass traps in the corners Behind the speakers? I am sorry if this is basic stuff, but room treatment is Way beyond me at this point.
  25. Cars!! Currently rebuilding a 1969 Firebird. Hence my lack of money for Audio Equipment.
