  1. Raptorman, I have a link that might interest you.It explains the pro's and cons of going active.I am planning to do a serious mod to my LaScala's including an active crossover from Marchand Electronics. You can look up the info on the web.Go to google and do a search for Bi-Amping.You will find an article from a guy named Rod Elliot(Benifits of Bi-Amping,not quite magic but close).I have done some research in this area on the web including lots of reviews on Marchand stuff. In addition Al K. is telling me in a true bi-amp setup it is best to go active.I was on the phone with him ready to place an order for one of his Extreme Slope networks. When I told him of my plans for bi-amping he indicated that his passive networks would not be the best way to go.I think if a guy stays away from time delay settings and so forth(just more ways to mess it up)and sticks with the basic functions of a crossover ie.divide the signals and send them to thier prospective drivers he will be ok.If you read the article I spoke of you might just go active. Greg
  2. So if I want to bi-amp my LaScala's with a 5 watt SET amp for the mids and highs(no woofer involved). Can I assume that I can get higher SPL's than is reflected in the chart with less power? Greg
  3. DM, I agree with alot of what you are saying plus I would add that simplicity is a very important aspect of any system. The more components in the signal chain the more the original signal is changed.I don't have a dedicated pre in my system,my amps have a high quality attenuator. Greg
  4. I believe that every system no matter what the componets are have thier own synergy.I think we can hear changes because components react differently with each other. Its a long road to find the sound.you like or can be.A company that makes several products would maybe design them to have a certain synergy working together. 5. Frzninvt, Thanks for the input.I already took the amp board to the dealer to be shipped out to Velodyne. When I got home I saw your post and checked the part in question ready to call the dealer and say STOP.Both plugs were secure in the PCB board.Velodyne seems to believe the problem is on the amp board. They will send me a completely rebuilt unit for $275.Ouch...oh well its cheaper than a new sub of the same quality. My other Velodyne(F1500)was a fantastic unit that blended well with the LAS and I believe this one will be the same once fixed.I see you are running 2 F1500R's.I want to find another one and do the same.LaScala's are another speaker without a sub.I believe a sub adds presence to the overall presentation. Thanks again. Greg
  6. Thankyou all for your input, I have made the descision to try the Decware SV83s monos on the mids and highs. What I like about Decware is thier philosiphy of simple and balanced. The only con I have read in reviews is the power output but the speakers in the reviews had sensetivitys of 90 to 94 db.Reviews with speakers of higher sens don't have that complaint. But every review gave a + for bass thru the high freq.I am new to tubes and like my Shanling SP-80 PP with the level 1 mods by parts connection. They make the LaScala's sound better than I have ever heard.I will have to sell the Shanling's to finance this move as I am doing other mods to the LaScala's.The plan is to make them 2way using 511B horns with 902 drivers. The network will be Al K.'s ES600 extreme slope. In addition this will be a bi-amp setup with a Bryston 3B w/input level control on the woofer.I have been in communication with Sfogg who also runs his LAS 2way.He says good things about the sound.Well this post is getting away from me,once again thankyou for the input. Greg
  7. Hello, I am having problems with my sub.It is paired with my LaScala's in a 2 channel setup. It runs fine until I turn volume up to match output of LAS then the sub shuts off after about 5 min.It turns back on about 30 seconds later. This happens at about 11 o'clock on the level control. This has been a problem since I bought it a year ago.I have owned a Velodyne F1500 paired with another set of LAS and it kept up with no problem.Has anyone had this problem or know the cause.Something else to note is the sub sounds muddy, not crisp like my previos Velodyne even at low levels. My dealer swears by them and he told me that they are some of th emost reliable tubes made today. I currently have Mullard tubes and want to play without it costing me an arm and leg. I'm also interested in replacing the tubes with New Factory Fresh tubes to see what happens. I let my dealer talk me into a Jan-Phillips Military grade 12AT7. I've read mixed reviews on this tube. I think that I may have made a mistake with that one. The older Phillip tubes were excellent but these were made in the US and are not the Holland made phillips tubes. Has anyone used the Jan-Phillips 12AT7? ---------------- I have used the JJ/Tesla EL34's and like the sound, nice mids, strong bass, clean highs, quiet. They just don't seem to last very long.I have only about a year expierience with tubes so I'm not sure how long they should last.I have gone through 4 in a year. 9. SET fans, Has anyone omned or are you familiar with Decware triode amps?I am interested in bi-amping my LaScala's with a good SET on the mids and highs and a Bryston 3B on the woofer.Any thoughts or comments apprieciated. Greg

Rob ---------------- Rober, thankyou for your input. Its nice to hear an oppinion from someone who has listened to the equipment.I am investigating all avenues of SET to make a sound choice and will look into bottlehead. Thanks Greg
  11. Has anyone heard Dared products? If so what is your impression of them?I would like to try a SET amp but don't want to spend big $$$$.Are these Dared monos overpriced? Greg

Greg ---------------- You're obviously doing fine. If you have an itch for trying a lo-pow amp, go for it. That's ultimately the best way to get it out of your system. Then you won't have any nagging doubts. That is, as long as you don't fall for the line about "If only you had used a different power cord/patchcord/tube brand/capacitor brand" etc, "then you would have loved it." ---------------- No way,I already have them.I have walked through the wilderness of stereophile and came out alive, broke but alive and wizer.I am going back to my roots. That means Klipsch LaScala's with something I never got to try.Never put any tubes on them...now I have and won't likely go back.I do have a Bryston 3B w/input level control that I want to put on the woofer and bi-amp with my tubes.Just having fun! 17. Hello, I am new to this forum and saw your post.I run a Velodyne powered sub which has x-over built in.My cd player has 2 outputs.1 set to my amps and LaScala's 1 feeds my sub.If you have another amp and 2 outputs on your Preamp you can utilize that second out.Other members of this forum could help with how to roll off the high's in the signal,I know it can be done just not sure how.Or you could run a full range signal to it. Greg

Greg
  19. sorry about that attachment,I didnt do something right and cant yet figure it out.I would suggest speaking with Al K.I'm sure he would be glad to help. Greg
