  1. SET...who cares about that low-powered, high-brow crap anyway? Just a bunch of stuck-up snobs who own that stuff, showing off to all their high-society friends; "Look at me...look at what I got...I'm so special...my 845 cost way more than your dumb 2A3"...blah, blah, blah... Hey, wait a minute...uh, what am I saying? Oops, got carried away for a minute there... ---------------- I would like to see a magizine that reviewed more equipment that isn't priced in the stratosphere. Stereophile is pretty to look at but how many people can afford most of that gear reviewed by these magazines. Is there a magazine that reviews more moderately priced equipment? I see lots of new brand names from overseas but never see any of it reviewed. I'd also like to see some kits reviewed.

Erik: thanks for the kind words on the Zebra wood case. It still needs some sanding and the amp needs to be set into the recess I routed out for it. Right now it's sitting on top of the case on 4 rubber legs. Here is another pic of a sub I made to keep the wife happy. I can turn the driver against the wall and she gets her furniture and I get my sub. ---------------- I would shop audiogon until the right deal comes along. There are always amps of great build quality at great prices available on audiogon you just have to watch and be ready to make an offer. It took me three weeks before I found the amps I wanted. Another thing I noticed is that most audiophiles take very good care of their gear so buying used shouldn't be as much of a concern. I also wouldn't limit to SET even though thats what I prefer. I would love to hear these quad II forty's on my belle's http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampstube&1095462347 . Thanks and good luck wish I was buying new gear...
  3. Has anyone in this forum listened to the Bottlehead phono stage? It would be used in conjunction with Wright WLA12A preamp/300b SET/belle's.
  4. Speaking of weakest links what do you think about this guys weakest link go here http://www.altmann.haan.de/tonearm/default.htm . I mean how could this sound good!
  5. Is the dope from hope available in pdf or downloadable format?
  6. Well I was trying to come in on budget but I've already heard the whooshing sound as it sailed past. I've already spent twice as much as expected so why stop now! I'll just get the 1000 watt amp over engineering is better than under engineering. Thanks again!
  7. Has there been documented proof of a virus spread via mp3? I haven't come across any but if they are that is a new attachment I will have to start blocking. I would say the chances of a virus surviving that are slim but you could always open it on a mac no chances of a virus infecting that but I suppose the last thing this forum needs is another flame war topic pc vs. mac : ).

I wonder if you can sell realdolls from realdoll.com on audiogon.
  9. _________________________ The Parts Express plate amp would be fine for this application. Get one of the bigger ones if you do, I'd go for the 500 watter. If you go with a conventional power amp, you can use Harrison Labs F-Mods for crossovers. They are a passive, preamp level 12 db high or low pass crossover that will plug into the power amp. Use 70 Hz with the Belles. You might consider 60 or 80 Hz if your room is unusual. _________________________ I was wondering about the crossover settings that was going to be my next question. Which would have the best sound quality? The 500 watt plate amp looks good. When I first heard this sub it was powered by a 200 watt nad so 500 watts should be enough. It's amusing to me that my klipsch are driven by 8 watt each yet the sub is 500 watt. Thanks again for the advice, Seti
  10. What is this re-form of which you speak? I learn something new everytime I am on this forum.

  12. I would say it depends on the girl last bit of luck i had she wanted to listen to the dead kennedy's and the undertones first release. If she's a hippy chick bob marley(acoustic medley off songs of freedom box set) always works. Hell ask her what she wants to listen to!
  13. I am not going to use this in a ht setup but just to hit where the belle's don't. I only heard this sub once when I purchased it and I wanted to set it up in the same config to see if I like it at home. The guy I bought it from had it setup in his house had a 200 watt NAD amp and an external crossover. I believe these are the drivers. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&PartNumber=297-608&DID=7 * Power handling: 300 watts RMS/425 watts max * Voice coil diameter: 2" * Voice coil inductance: 4.2 mH * Nominal Impedance: 8 ohms * DC resistance: 3.5 ohms * Frequency response: 18.1-500 Hz * Fs: 18.1 Hz * SPL: 90.6 dB 2.83V/1m * Vas: 4.92 cu. ft. * Qms: 3.7 * Qes: .21 * Qts: .20 * Xmax: 12.5mm * Net weight: 14.6 lbs. * Dimensions: Overall Diameter: 12", Cutout Diameter: 11", Mounting Depth: 5-1/4", Magnet Diameter: 5-3/4". *greek to me* I unfortunatley do not know how they are wired as they were custom built and I did not get any schematics. Thanks for the advice....
  14. What is your opinion of the bottlehead 2a3's ?
  15. I'm not going to use this in a home theatre. The person I bought them from had the sub hooked up to a 200 watt nad and a seperate crossover. In retrospect I should have had him toss them in on the deal. He was using the sub to add some bass and go where the belles couldn't. It wasn't room rattling ht bass but rather just adding something you could tell on some tracks when it was turned off that something was diferent. I thought it was interesting and wanted to try a simnilar setup at home for further evaluation. I'm not sure after evaluation if I would love it or hate but I want to give it another chance. I don't mind buying a plate amp just for the sub and I also wouldn't mind picking up one of the amps listed. What I do care about is quality and clarity which would be the best route? a lower powered plate amp/crossover or a seperate amp and crossover? Thanks again for all the advice!
  16. I believe that is it all he told me was that it had 2 12 inch peerless xls drivers but that could be it. He also said it will go down to 18cycles but I'm a newbie not really sure how low that is. Thanks for the opinion I was a little worried as I spent $1200 on the belle's and $400 on the sub. I will look at the amps suggested. Do those include crossovers? Thanks!
  17. When I bought a pair of Belle's I also got a custom made isobaric subwoofer because he would not split them up. The sub was supposedly designed by someone who was a consultant for Cary Audio but I can't prove it and the cabinet was made buy a great woodworker in the Ozarks. It is made from walnut(pic attached) and even uses the same grill as the belles. All I know about the guts of this critter is that it has 2 12 inch peerless drivers. The problem is that it has no built in amp or crossover. I have a tube based system but for the sub I would prefer solid state. What would members of this forum recommend for this sub? Can I purchase an external unit that has crossover and amp in one unit? This is my first sub and I am just not sure what would be the best course of action. Any advice much appreciated!

  19. I currently have the JJ 300B's and I have been happy with them so far but the only thing I have compared them to are some valve arts which I didn't like as much. I have been reading really good reviews of the sophia meshplates but has anyone in this forum tried them? http://www.sophiaelectric.com/pages/se/300B5v.htm
  20. I have seen several pieces of wright gear come up for sale on audiogon lately and when they do they sell fast. I missed 4 pieces before I got a preamp and if I like it i'll also try his phono stage. I searched audioasylum and it seems he has a good reputation for building quality gear without being overpriced but i'll seen find out. Seti

  22. Well dam I just switched from UPS to FedEX because of shipping problems and units arriving broken and boxes partially crushed. The last two times I shipped there were problems and they are the hardest to collect from or at least for me. What other shipping options are there? I was thinking that perhaps next day delivery would be an option as travel time is reduced? Shipping is the only thing I don't like about buying items off of audiogon.
  23. OK sorta of topic but funny. My nephew was watching the beverly hillbillies(episode Jethro's Pad) so I noticed Jethro was trying to be an internatial jetset playboy and one of the requirements for this status was a hi-fi system to help put women in the mood. I wouldn't usually notice but he had tube monoblocks and even a tube preamp. The tubes he was using were very bright and I was hoping to see soem khorns but no such luck. The only problem I could see with Jethros plan was that he was using a turntable per channel so it would be stereo to blast women into the mood...I can't believe I haven't tried this.. So how many of you have success put women in the mood with your systems and are we that much closer to being international playboys? LOL

    room size ?

I simply had no idea room size mattered so much. Thanks for all the input perhaps i'll just tear down one of the walls and extend the room. So what are the magic deminsions for a room to house a pair of belles anyhow?

    room size ?

Wow thanks for all the advice. It is a little over my head so I should start to read the f*ing manual. lol.... I went back and actually measured the ceilings for myself and only one room in the house has 15ft ceilings and that is the kitchen lol no klipsch there. The other rooms are 12ft ceilings. I'll check out the modecalc. I have an attic that could be converted to living space but i bet the slanted ceilings wouldn't help..... Thanks again!
