  1. You know what they say about people's opinions, everyone has one, and you asked for them so: IF one doesn't need heavy watts to drive ineffecient speakers I don't see how you could do any better than one of Scott's vintage integrated amplifiers. I've owned a couple and currently own a 299D that's been completely redone by Charlie at Vacuum Tube Valley. I don't know how much money a guy would have to spend to get the quality sound that can be had from one of Scott's integrated amps. These guys had it so right all those years ago! My $.02 Regards, Bill Woodward
  2. Hello all; I have an old amplifier, (no matter the make) and it has all screws for the same small spades that La Scalas use, not only for the speaker connections but also the connection to a preamp. All my home built speaker cables are constructed for small spades but I can't live with the spade connections to a preamp. I've checked with a couple of shops in the area and the cost is more than I can justify given what I have in the amplifier! Is there anyone in the Pacific Northwest, (Portland, Oregon area would be nice) who would convert two of the screw/spade connectors on the ba ck of this amp. to a couple of RCA jacks. Of course I'll pay and even throw in something that might make it worth someone's time. Thought I'd check here before I gave up. Thanks all, Bill Woodward wjwoodie@aol.com
  3. Can anyone direct me to some pictures of Altec receivers. I'm told they are model 308A, 304A, 303A, or ACC 101. I have searched the web and can find nothing. Thanks all, Bill Woodward

No cables equals no sound! I also liked "I had believed that thicker cables were better for transmitting lower frequencies, but apparently not. These solid-core 12-gauge runs of pure copper wire had no trouble relaying well-articulated, deep thunderous bass when the source material called for it." What, 12 gauge isn't a thick wire for a speaker connection? And then he says, "I could ramble on…" Please don't. If you really want solid core 12 gauge copper cables with spade lugs on the ends I will make them for you at the absolutely bargain basement price of only $5/ft! THIS IS SNAKE OIL! (Oh, by the way - I can sell you some of that also!) Go to your local Home Depot (or whatever is near you) buy a spool of 12 gauge stranded speaker wire, some 12 gauge crimp on spade lugs and the crimp tool for less that you would pay this Bozo for a set of his "magic dust wires." You will then be set up for making custom speakers connections for yourself and several of your friends for many years to come. They will work every bit as good as his! And, as a bonus, since you will be using stranded wire yours will be easier to run. Let the speaker cable wars begin! ---------------- Honestly, this subject alone is the reason I came to this site, and the reason I check it almost everyday. No matter how they try the voodoo cable crowd can't change the laws of physics, we're stuck with them and I love it! Regards, Bill Woodward
  5. To one degree or another I think most everyone is a bit biased towards the set up they've put together and tweeked a bit,....I'm no exception. I have a ST70 that's had all the caps replaced and that's it. I use it most of the time with a McIntosh C11 pre from 1961 that's totally stock. My La Scalas sound so warm, just exquisite. I recently hooked it to a Scott 299D that's been completely redone by Charlie at Vacuum Tube Valley. (total cost including the amp. itself ($1000.) I have about $500.0 in my ST70 as it is. Scott products or for that matter a Dynaco ST70 that has had caps. replaced so that there is little or no "Hum" at all is very difficult to beat. These guys had it so right all those years ago that I can't see any reason to use solid state gear with such sensitive/efficient speakers. If you had a more difficult speaker to drive I could see going solid state. My two centavos,... Regards, Bill Woodward
  6. Damm it makes me proud to know an American company will go out of their way to do the right thing. I love their products, (swear by them) and this is the kind of thing that will keep me a fan for life. Their ethics and the way they do business is seldom seen in our world today. Regards, Bill Woodward
  7. I've known Cris for about ten years and this isn't his garage it's his warehouse, I go over there every week or so. If he would have taken the picture of MY Dahlquist DQ10's from another angle you might have seen an almost pristine pair of original Patrishans. (Sp?) (Looked to me like giant Khorns) He runs into a fair amout of Klipsh gear but he's known in twenty countrys as being the guy to call for Altec gear. He's a real road warrior racking up professional trucker type mileage on his big truck. Over time I've been offered Altec tube monoblocks, countless Altec speakers, and he's the guy who gave me a sweetheart deal on a pair of absolutely "As new" stained birch La Scalas in their original boxes. (He knew how much I wanted a pair and gave me a pretty good deal) I try to pay him back when I can by feeding him Bass Ale at my house, and I sold my DQ10's with the sub and crossover to him for the same price I offered them to members on this site, ($300.00) you can see what they sold for. The guy who bought them got a great pair of speakers! Cris should write a book about is life. He has done so many crazy things for fun and profit. Regards, Bill Woodward
  8. Hi Mark: I appreciate your reply but I'm not quite sure I understand. I believe you are saying that the M400 will need me to feed BOTH channels into my preamp,....Then at the preamp have them going into the pre with a RCA jack that feeds all four channels via a RCA 2 into 1 adapter? Thanks again, Bill Woodward
  9. First thank you for the information. As I do this there's no chance of doing damage to the amps is there? Thanks, Bill Woodward
  10. I've been able to get all my dumb questions answered so I thought I'd run this one by the group. I have two Carver M400 "Cube" amplifiers that I have had completely redone by Rita at Carver/Sunfire not too long ago. For those who are familar with these amps they have both Stereo and mono modes that can be changed with the flip of a switch. Sooo, if I want to run them as monoblocks I can switch them to "Mono" and run only one channel of each into my Preamplifier? (This is a question not a statement) Since these amplifiers have both Mono and Stereo modes I should be able to run both the right and left channels into a RCA 2 into 1 adapter to the preamp right? (again a question not a statement) Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks again all, Bill Woodward
  11. I'd say; "Thanks for your opinion, could you please let me listen to some 104db sensitive speakers you sell." Don't have any? Then I'd invite him over to my house to listen to one of my 42 year old integrated amps. (Scott 299D) driving some twenty year old Kilpsch La Scalas. Then I'd let him know that one of my entire systems costs less to put together than ONE of his high end speakers. I love the rip off high end dealers and the nut cases that buy $20K amps and then sell them in six months for the next greatest thing Stereophile magazine says they should buy. It leaves lots of bargans for a simple guy like me. Bill Woodward
  12. Thanks Al, What the heck is a crossover network going to cost? Damm I feel dumb,... An Outlaw network?? I need to start looking, I'm sure the same goes for my Scott 299D. Thanks again guys. Bill Woodward
  13. I feel really dumb asking this but I need help. This morning I swapped a buch of components and changed my systems around. I'm told my old McIntosh C11 tube pre amp. can use a sub woofer. In this case it's a Sunfire MkII true sub. (The sub has worked fine last night with other components) There seems to be only two possibilities, 1.) the single jack right next to the "Main output" jacks, (located half way inbetween the "R" and "L" main outputs and it's marked "L+R") I'm guessing it is for a center channel speaker OR a sub. OR 2.) two very small screws on the bottom left corner as you're facing the back of the pre amp that say, "To speaker." Bottom line, I seem to get the smallest amount of bass with a RCA jack into the single output from the Pre amp marked "L+R" but it's lame as can be. Any suggestiopns guys? Thanks as always, Bill Woodward
  14. Thanks for the reply, no worrys friend. I've spent a little time in France,... Bill Woodward

  16. "French Government Raises Terrorist Alert." AP- The French Government has raised their country's Terrorist Alert from "Run" to "Hide" for their citizens. The only two higher alert ratings are "Surrender" and "Collaborate." A French Government spokesperson said they fear terrorists may attempt an attack on their largest white flag factory effectively disabling their defense industry. Bill Woodward
  17. Man what I wouln't give to have your; 1. Knowledge and skill 2. Your tools I Love my La Scalas and I'm really happy they're not painted but the beautiful stained birch. If I had your skill, knowledge, and tools, I'd make cabnets for all my vintage gear including my Scott 299D, a Scott tuner, (yet to be acquired!) my vintage Phase Linear series two tuner, my Carver C4000 Pre amp. etc. etc. etc.! I'd love a pair of Totum (LIke) mini towers in a mahagony to match the furniture in my study. (except sensitive enough to be driven with my old tube gear) What a craft you have! Regards, Bill Woodward
  18. Thanks Dflip, just in the nick of time. I wanted to get some more information on them and for the money it seems like they'll be a good fit for me. Regards, Bill Woodward
  19. Any suggestions, seriously. Space is a serious consideration. They can only be about nine inches wide. It's a very small study. I love horn loaded speakers, but,...space.
  20. Hello All: I've needed to get a pair of tower style speakers for my very small study and I have found a brand new pair. I'm told by the dealer that they are 90db efficent which I will need because I will be driving them with a "New" (to me completely redone) Scott 299D. I can pick them up for $425.00 in their sealed boxes. What do you guys think? Thanks as always, Bill Woodward
  21. Hi Dean; The major issue for me at this point is space. The only spot I've had for these is in my living room and right now a pair of perfect 1985 La Scalas has taken the Dahlquist's space. (The best HiFi deal I personally have ever run into!) I thought I'd take a stab at finding someone in the Pacific Northwest who might want to trade for a pair of KG3.5's or RF10's or RF15's, but I after reflection it might be a bit of a lng shot. I've loved these Dahlquist speakers, they do sound very nice, maybe a bit bright, but I does interest me on upgradiing their networks. What exactly is involved? What upgrading have you done for others? WHat would be the total cost? Thanks for the advice. Bill Woodward
  22. There no way I want to try to ship these excellent DQ10's that I have had professionally refoamed along with the 400 watt passive sub and "Passive matrixing" crossover that came with them. If someone can pick them up in Portland, Oregon or I can meet someone within a hundred miles or so they can be had for a relative song. Thanks, Bill Woodward P.S. I would not mind trading up or down, or even, for a pair of smallish floor standing tower type speakers.
  23. I only looking to keep them from getting crushed so often. Given the arrangment of my living room the old set of cables were all but ruined over a couple of years. So I'm making a new pair of cables, given the megabuck cables I see with this real soft foam around them I thought it would do no harm. You're tellling me I'll notice the degraded sound? If not do you know where I might get some of the stuff? Does this mean those five or six hundred dollar cables I see with this foam on them are being degraded sound wise? Thanks for your help, Bill Woodward
  24. No one needs to tell you how cool this "New" Scott pair you scored are! My 299D was no where near the deal you got, but I love Scott's tube gear, a real bargan at almost any price in this day of megabuck high fidelity. Think how much you'd have to pay today to get the same sound you get from this "Old Junk!" Congratulations, Bill Woodward
  25. Yes, congratulations on your new La Scalas. Mine are of 1985 vintage and Bob from this site sold me some brand new AA crosovers. I just added a Sufire Mark II sub to them and I don't believe I'll ever get rid of them. The sould is out of this world, I love them! Might be a little over the top but would you mind telling me/us about what a new pair costs? If not I understand. Beautiful,... Bill Woodward
