I've got the 6800 on my windows machine and it's an extremely nice card. I just haven't found a good free dvd player for the pc yet that doesn't crap the picture out...I must confess I haven't looked too hard either though ---------------- watch the apple web sight. they have a version of quicktime 7 comeing for the windows based (pc) platform. the quick time 7 rocks!!! it will do HD to 480i and it all looks great, in full screen!! and if you can find software that uses the h.264 you can make your own HD dvd's (i use fcp5) headed down to the race track to shoot some HD video of VIPER DAYS(we have over 60 full race vipers) they have a 100 mile feature race today. should make for some great footage!!! jay

The purchased version of Quicktime (which allows full screen viewing) has the best picture for a dvd viewer program that I've seen so far. And of course controlling the system would be done with a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse Going the PC route would be very similar. ---------------- ya i know what your thinking....... as i sit in the HT room surfing the web on my new power mac duel g5 twin 2.7 gig, "BILLIONS AND BILLIONS" of ram and hard drive space, i KNOW what your talking about!! although i went with the nvidia 6800 ultra ddl card, instead or the ati card (its way faster)...and supports twin HD displays... well, im once again im tired of the web.... i think ill play around and do a little HD vidio editing (in real time of coarse and in full sceen!!!) by the way if you decide to do the HD vidio thing get as much drive space as you can afford!!! 22 minutes of non compressed 1080i mini dv takes up about 40 gig of drive space and by the time you add the transitions and special effects it will eat up over 50 gigs of drive space!!! the really amazing thing it that after you run it through the h.264 codec you can get almost 4 hours on a duel layer dvd!!! jay

On the AVT 235 you can go up beyond that to +8 or +10 but you should have your ears on and listen carefully for any distortion and if you hear any, back off. Bottom line: let your ears be your guide. Go to 0 Db or beyond cautiously, and if you hear distortion, back off. ---------------- just an edjamakated(sp?) guess on my part but the 00 db is most likely the point where the preamp output level is at what the designers have deemed is the max clean output of the preamp. if you push past this limit you may over drive the preamp on louder passages. the 00 db referance on a 5 volt preamp would not be the same as on a 4 volt preamp in terms out output voltage to the amps. jay

  7. great post!!! and now a question?? as stated before is it better to scale to the native res of the display? or just get close and let the internal scaler do the rest?? the reason i ask is that, in my case, my sony projectors native res is 1366 by 768. but in the book it says to set your computers output res to xga (1024 by 768) the new mac(duel g5 2.7 gig) that i just bought has the nvidia 6800 ultra ddl card that lets me scale to any res. should i set it to 1366 by 768 or 1024 by 768 ?? any thoughts?? griff?? thanks, jay
  8. as a side note i found out why it was on display. warren buffet and his crew are haveing the brookshire hathaway convention in town, and its on display for the stockholders private shopping spree. word has it that some guy from l.a. bought 2!!! of them and they have sold a total of 5 sets!!! also around the corner was a 75 inch sharp lcd prototype that said the price was yet to be decided. the remote for it had oriental letters printed on the buttons!!! jay
  9. great score!!! bad placement of jvc any thing above 3 on the volume control and the reciever ends up on the floor!! jay
  10. i was at nebraska furniture mart making a payment today and wandered over to the tv section to walk through, and they have an 80 inch plasma samsung on display!!! price...$100,000.00!!!! and if you use your mart card its only $4,000.00 per month!!!! had to laugh out loud!!! and the pic was crappy ( dead pixles, flashed pixles, ect) jay

  13. i coppied this from an other web sight http://www.eff.org/broadcastflag/ Join the Digital Front of Television Liberation! Today, you can use any device you like with your television: VCR, TiVo, DVD recorder, home theater receiver, or a PC combining these functions and more. A year from now, when the FCC's broadcast flag mandate takes effect, some of those capabilities will be forbidden. Responding to pressure from Hollywood, the FCC has adopted a rule requiring future digital television (DTV) tuners to include "content protection" (aka DRM) technologies. Starting next year, all makers of HDTV receivers must build their devices to watch for a broadcast "flag" embedded in programs by copyright holders. When it comes to digital recording, it'll be Hollywood's DRM way or the highway. Want to burn that recording digitally to a DVD to save hard drive space? Sorry, the DRM lock-box won't allow it. How about sending it over your home network to another TV? Not unless you rip out your existing network and replace it with DRMd routers. Kind of defeats the purpose of getting a high definition digital signal, doesn't it? The good news is that we have until July 1, 2005, to buy, build, and sell fully-capable, non-flag-compliant HDTV receivers. Any receivers built now will "remain functional under a flag regime, allowing consumers to continue their use without the need for new or additional equipment." Any devices made until then can be re-sold in the future. We at EFF want to do our part to advance the DTV transition -- and the public's rights to receive and manipulate DTV broadcasts with technologies they choose. We want to keep the right to time- and space-shift that the VCR has given us (against Hollywood's protest). We want to keep the fair use rights that let us excerpt clips from press conferences or make our own "Daily Show" from the evening news. That's why we're encouraging people to buy HDTV tuner cards now and build multi-function receivers and recorders around them. Here's where you can help. The folks at www.pcHDTV.com make an HD-capable (ATSC) tuner card with Linux drivers. The MythTV project has built a terrific personal video recorder (PVR) platform that gives a GNU/Linux PC features like TiVo's pause live TV and "season pass" recording. These are great for geeks, and we're looking for volunteers to help make the combination more accessible to the general public. There are also a number of alternatives for Windows and Macintosh computers that offer similar features. We still need volunteers to help make these products more accessible to more people. The Broadcast Flag: The essence of the FCC's rule is in 47 CFR 73.9002( and the following sections: "No party shall sell or distribute in interstate commerce a Covered Demodulator Product that does not comply with the Demodulator Compliance Requirements and Demodulator Robustness Requirements." The Demodulator Compliance Requirements insist that all HDTV demodulators must listen for the flag (or assume it to be present in all signals). Flagged content must be output only to "protected outputs" or in degraded form: through analog outputs or digital outputs with visual resolution of 720x480 pixels or less--less than 1/4 of HDTV's capability. Flagged content may be recorded only by "Authorized" methods, which may include tethering of recordings to a single device. The Demodulator Robustness Requirements are particularly troubling for open-source developers. In order to prevent users from gaining access to the full digital signal, the FCC ties the hands of even sophisticated users and developers. Devices must be "robust" against user access or modifications that permit access to the full digital stream. Since open-source drivers are by design user-modifiable, a PC tuner card with open-source drivers would not be "robust." It's not even clear that binary-only drivers would qualify. Together, these rules mean that future PVR developers will have to get permission from the FCC and/or Hollywood before building high-definition versions of the TiVo. The products that they do build will be epoxied against user experimentation and future improvement. The rules mean that open-source developers and hobbyists will be shut out of the HDTV loop altogether. i guess that if you dont have a hi-def dvr its time to snag one before they have the chip installed jay
  14. colterphoto, thats the same stuff that came on my 77's that you said you liked so much. at last check you can still get it from the factory. it's fairly cheep ($30 to regrill my hereseys, and i have a bunch left over) jay

  18. if i use the plan of putting the subs in the listening position, does it matter what way they are pointed, to the front/rear/side of the room. or should i lay them down pointing up at the ceiling?? come to think of it, has anyone ever tried pointing the subs at the ceiling?? i wonder what effect that would have on bass output?? jay

  20. i have had my system set up in three different rooms and in its most recent room it has lost more bass output than i think it should have. because of the giant pita of moveing things around i was wondering if someone would give me a starting point, on sub placement in my room. the room 13x19x8 the north wall is 13 feet, concrete block, 5 ft under grade. this is also where the screen is. mounted 6 in off the wall. the east wall is also concrete block (19 ft). the south wall is framed with drywall and the opening into the room is located in the corner against the west wall (the opening is 38 inches wide) into a short hallway the west wall is framed, with drywall and has a brick fireplace that takes up the center third of the wall. the seating area is 12 ft back from the north wall the subs now sit front and center on the north wall under the screen. the backs of the cabinets are 1 ft from the wall. where should they go?? im useing cornwalls for the fronts and they are forced ,because of screen size, into the corners. the subs can be stacked verticaly or horizontaly if that would be better?? they are twin 15 cabs that are front ported (h36 w20 d18) any thoughts as to a starting point for placement?? thanks in advance jay

Blacks on this projector are pretty much black. I used the Avia disc to set the colors and WOW, this is a pretty picture. One thing the Avia does is force you to lower the level of sharpness. It actually does bring out more detail. I also am not affiliated with Carada. As above, another satisfied customer. Interesting about painting the back wall. It does make sense. We already painted the wall with the screen a flat darkish green. I wonder if I can convince her to paint the back wall the same color......nah, probably not. ---------------- i use a stewart???who knew?? i agree that wall treatments are very important try black crushed velvet its a little wierd tho. with the rear curtain closed and the can lights all the way off the screen "floats in space" out in front of you!! the velvet works great and slows down some reflections from the speakers as well jay
