  1. Check with 3dzapper...I think he might have one. I have a black one for sale, Olorin will gladly make it oak for you
  2. Hmmm, I live in MD. Already have WO 87 Khorns. Maybe the ultimate HT with khorns for mains and rears. Where are ya and how much? Send email if you like to rplace13*NoSpam*@yahoo.com Remove the *NoSpam* Thanks, Rich
  3. I'm guessing a pair of something to split!!??
  4. If talking purely home theater and not music, between all Academy, all Forte or all Heresy I am not sure there is a clear winner. Forte is an all time classic - great speaker all around but for most room I think (and experienced this myself) that the Forte is a difficult speaker to use for surrounds and back surrounds due to the passive radiator in the rear. If you had a huge room it would work, but most are not that lucky. Forties were my mains with an Academy center for many, many yearshard to beat. Having just mounted my heresies they are very large, heavy and bulky in all directions and make walking under them difficult (unless you have high ceilings). I have them put on their sides and mounted near the ceiling. An academy would be shorter top to bottom (giving more room to walk under them) intruding into the room less. I have seen the statement made that an Academy and a Heresy are about the same size. This might be true in volume, but a longer shorter Academy just looks better to me then a heresy on its side. But then who cares about lookswe are talking HT here, right? It is all about the sound. Since the center is so important in a movie I might be more inclined to give the nod to the all Academy set up. At the very least I would love to hear it. If someone has done it please give us a report. If music becomes an issue then you have to go with Fortes, IMO. I am never getting rid of my Forte IIs...but they currently don't have a place in my HT set up. Heresies are the clear winner in the money departmentbut our thread starter says he already has 3 Academies so getting 5/6/7 of the others would probably cost the same or more then rounding out the Academy set. I agree starting from scratch it would be pricy to go all Academies. Still like Frzn stated you can always get you money back.
  5. I can't say for sure that it would sound great (not having done it or heard it) but I would be willing to bet money that it would sound great. Especially if space were a premium this would be a nice way to go. For a while I had three Academies as L/R surround and surround back in my 6.1 set up. I liked it quite well.
  6. Dean (and other) what is your advice on 87 khorns with AK-2 Xovers. Would those As be a step in the right direction or should I first make the change to new parts for the almost 20 year old speakers and freshen them up to AK-3 status while I am at it. Don't think I am the right guy for the job, and don't want to be with out speakers for any length of time so would like to buy a set of xovers then maybe have my AK-2s worked over and compare, then keep what I like best....and sell the other.
  7. As promised here are the pix of my set up. Things are rather tight and taking off the dust cover for use is a tricky navigation to say the least. I like the fact that the TT is rather high. Makes queuing up the track pretty easy. I need some light in this closetnot to mention a more finished look it I am going to be showing off my TT. Here are the turnbuckles for adjusting the level.
  8. Well, almost 250 views and only mild interest. I'll drop the price 25 bucks and wait another day before putting it on ebay. 550 including shipping anywhere in the lower 48. 525 if you come and get it. Thanks for looking.
  9. Nice TT, looks great. Nice family too! I was all over the Scout till some other things got in the way. So far I am very happy with the Muich Hall MMF-5. Scout will have to wait a bit.
  10. Unless I am way off base here I can't imagine having any vibration issues from foot traffic. I am in the basement on a concrete slab with poured concrete wall around me. Add to that the fact that the TT is not on any wall or floor. The only problem I could see would be that my wires suspending the TT are in the first floor, floor joists. If somebody was to jump up and down in my living room that might transmit down. Wouldn't the wires absorb most of that? No walls related to the khorns are involved either. Am I underestimating the tenacity of vibrations or am I worrying about something that does not exit?
  11. Don't forget Pretty Pink Ribbon. There are so many good songs once you start to listen and I mean listen to them. Very tlented...and funny too. Get going O, find me that DVD!
  12. You have heard of them...you just don't know it. The guys in the band are our age (40-46). Short Skirt Long Jacket, He's going the Distance, Frank Sinatra are some of the more radio played songs. Really funny but smart lyrics. Go on line and buy the CD Comfort Eagle. If you don't like it I will pay you back for it. (This offer applies to CP1, not the lot of you cheap Ba$ta..s) Edit: link to bands site http://www.cakemusic.com/
  13. Thanks for the quick reply, Ben. I am confused now. I was under the impression that you put some big honking piece of something under a TT to provide mass which in turn absorbed any vibration. Am I wrong here? Are you saying that the granite you used actually vibrated/resonated and hurt the bass? Do you know how/why the wooden shelf corrected the problem? Also what does the term footfalls mean? Thanks, Rich FYI, my current wood shelf is 11.5 X 20. This gives me just enough side to suspend the shelf with out interfering with the plinth. But almost gives the illusion that the TT is floating in mid air. Well except for the four wires hanging down from the ceiling. Not too worried about the weight as the stainless steel aircraft wire is good to 900 pounds per strand. Now the mounting to the floor joists might be an issue as weight increases, but I can over engineer that with a little more effort.
  14. A few months ago on DirecTV's Freeview I saw a Cake concert. I thought it was really nice in both sound and video. I have been looking here and there for a DVD of the concert with no luck. Anyone know if such a DVD exists or if any live Cake music is out there on DVD? Thanks, Rich
  15. In my original post a while back Original Thread you guys had a lot of helpful info. Two mentioned suspending the TT form the ceiling. That is exactly what I did inside the equipment closet (see original post for closet pix, scroll down a bit). Not so much to prevent vibration of floors, but because I needed the TT close to the equipment, I needed the space under the stairs for growing record collection, I cold not put the TT in my rack as it was too wide and a shelf like Larry C suggested would put the TT sideways and make queuing up the LP difficult on the side wall or too far into the closet to reach if on the back wall. At least for now the suspended TT seems the best optionbut I am still open to suggestions. Ill try and get some pix this weekend, but basically I have a shelf narrower then the plinth front to back and wider then the plinth side to side. The shelf hits all four feet of the TT but allows the front to hang over shelf just a bit. This is great because the power switch of my MMF-5 is on the bottom left/front of the plinth. I suspended the shelf with stainless steel aircraft wire and put a turnbuckle on each wire to aid in leveling it. After 3 day of listening I am pretty happy with the setup. My questions are: Should I have any concerns with a suspended shelf for my TT, are there any special issues I should be aware of? Currently the shelf is cheap pine, dont you want some mass for the base of a TT? Should I look into using my pine shelf as a template and having a final version made from Granite or Marble? Thanks for all the TT and vinyl help to date, Rich
  16. Might check your avatar while you are at it. Not showing up...maybe a space there too.
  17. rplace

    Avia

Check ebay I got mine there and for less then MSRP sealed, new.
  18. Ki, you are the second to ask...so I will post here. UPS paid out on the claim in full for 600 dollars in turn they took the entire speaker and the packing from the damaged item.
  19. Bite the bullet and contact your brother. Sell the khorns here to a needy soul and use that money to finance your new purchases. Khorns should not be sitting around not being used.
  20. Ultra High Recording Quality or some such thing. Never heard one can't say how good they are.

I prefer the top boosted over the bottom. Eventually gravity catches up with everything. Fletch, is yours the UHRQ version or just the standard MFSL?
  22. The more I think about it Supertramp was very forward thinking in the name of that album. I would, in fact, be the crime of the century to pay 200 bucks for that album.
  23. Too bad it is Supertramp If you want to make money I am sure you will get in the 20-50 range on ebay. 200...I would be surprised. I just bought David Bowies MFSL Ziggy Stardust on ebay for 20 something. Not sealed and new...but arguably a more classic album. Find the true Supertramp fan and maybe. This is my laymans understanding of 1/2 speed masters and MFSL. They use master tapes, not copies, of the recording session. They play them back at 1/2 speed and in turn the equipment that is used to make the "stampters" is operating at 1/2 speed. This allows for more detail in a 1/2 speed master LP then a traditional setup. Finally during the pressing of the vinyl they user more and better quality vinyl. So any 1/2 speed master lp (there are lots) should sound pretty darn good. It is my understanding that MFSL or Mo-FI or Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs is just very good at what they do. So as a general rule a MFSL "Boston" album will probably bring more then a CBS 1/2 speed master "Boston" album. Insert what ever album name you want in place of "Boston". I did read somewhere that The Who "Face Dances" album by MFSL is a dog. No personal experience on my end though.
  24. I originally purchased 3 Academies off of ebay for 1800 dollars (600 each) One was damaged in shipping so I was left with two. I experimented with the remaining two pulling duty as front and rear centers in a 6.1 set up and then as R/L surrounds in the same 6.1 set up. Chorus and Forte II were the other speakers in use. They excelled in both uses. For about 10 years or so prior to that I have used Forte/Academy/Forte as my 5.1 system and yes the Academy is that good. IMO if you are using Quartet, Forte or Chorus you simply must have an Academy as your center. The only reason I am getting rid of the Academy is because I have recently acquired khorns and have gone with khorns and heresies all around. The one academy has already been sold to forum member bitece. I think he would be more then willing to speak about my accurate description of the speaker prior to his purchase. I would prefer local pick up but have the ability to pack it so I am quite certain it will arrive intact. Ask Tubes, Horns and Buds about my packing of his heresy if you have any doubt. I am just looking to get close to my money back but not really interested in giving this away. I will sell it for 575 and I will pay the shipping. If you have the ability to come and get it great I will let it go for 550. The speaker is in fantastic shape all corners are perfect. All edges are clean and crisp. There is a few spots where the blackness is starting to wear thin. I noticed when I wiped it down with lemon oil that the cloth got a little darker in color. All my other Klipsch speakers are oiled so I guess you need to clean the black ones with something else. I have seen a couple of posts in the forum about how to get all the black back on the speakers do this an you will have a 10 of 10 speaker. I have over 20 extremely high resolution photo of the Academy as this link. Academy For Sale Next to each link is a brief description of what you are looking at. I have tired to make the speaker look as bad as possible using lots of light and a flash. It looks way better in person then with the harshness of flash photography. If you are not happy with the way it looks or sounds when you get it, ship it back to me at your expense in the exact same condition I sent it to you in and I will give you all of your money back. You are not going to find that offer on ebay. I want you to be as happy with this phenomenal speaker as I have been. I live in the Baltimore area. I am willing to meet you along 95 if you like for delivery. D.C, philly or N.J is a short drive to my house. For all of you Academy doubters out there find 10-12 others who want to audition an Academy and send me 50 bucks each. You can then ship it between yourselves and arm-wrestle over who gets it in the end. If you have any questions give me a yell. Warning for dial up users these are very large files they will take a long time to render. NOTE each photo opens up into another browser. Use the links and descriptions below to see what I have to say about each picture.
  25. Drag, Don't most commercial theaters have the speakers behind the screen? I have read about THX approved home screens that are perforated and remember reading a post a while back about a forum member (soundbroker I think) that had done installs of perfed screens with great success. Personally I think if you had the space and deep enough pockets devising a HT that is as close to a real theater would be pretty cool...speakers behind a wall of screen and all. I could do with out the sticky floor.
