  5. currently run 2 phase linear 400 amps am somewhat pleased with the reproduction, i would like it if i had to turn up the volume more as i understand the better performance is around the 10 or 11 oclock pos. i want good clean sound at low and high levels, i can only turn the volume to 9 oclock as things are now. and i recently installed la scalas and they have shown a known trait with the phase linear amps a slight hum or hiss. (what ever you want to call it) im looking to upgrade and figure to have 700 800 dollars from the sale of phase gear, tubes or ss are fine with me as long as they are basically maint free. i also have to be able to run 4 speakers without running in deries or phase thanks for the help and advice Joe

  12. thanks all i seem to have solved the problem have had no feedback since the ugly was installed, now just need to find a nice piece of marble to dress the thing up a little, hard to beleive a paver and a few rubber balls could solve feedback Joe
  13. hello there i just went thru the exact same problem you are talking about, i had the problem with 2 different tables, the first thing was i had bad rca ends on the turntable interconnects, that was an easy 5.00 fix went to radio shack and bought new ends connected them and all was good for a while(i was able to diagnose the problem as being the rca's by simply moving them around at the connection to the pre, if the sound goes away, or is interupted or changed its a fairly safe bet you have a problem there, next time i had the problem was even simplier to fix it was simply vibrations caused by alot of bass, thus causing the feedback again, isolasted the TT and problem solved. that speaker noise will sure give your heart a jump start though wouldnt you say, i know i freaked out and ran for the controls Joe
  14. "Btw, how are you connecting the units to your reciever? VIA digital or analog connections? You might notice an improvement with the digital connection so it's worth a try." ---------------- DID THEY EVEN HAVE THE OPTICAL CAPABILITIES 15 YEARS AGO???? just wandering Joe
  15. randy i"ll have you know i always cover my baaaaaaaaa,oh you mean on the ugly table, yes i thought of that but wouldnt that just be something else to pick up the vibration and cause feedback again??????? and yes that is a dual cs 5000(good eye), i am pretty happy with it so far has a great sound with it, read some complaints about the tone arm weight but i dont see where its a problem. i have a audio technica cart on it and seems to perform fairly well for a 300 dollar TT i love it Joe
  16. i would have to say better low volume (level) performance, i tend to think the phase linear does a good job at reproducing sound, but also as i upgraded my speakers to la scalas they do show off weaknesses in the upstream equipment (amps) i noticed yesterday that the phase linear puts of a constant background hum or hiss (not sure how to describe it) the sound dissappears into the music once it begins to play but between tracks, and while idle the sound is present, the amps were reworked to spec less than a year ago so im confident this is just a trait of the design i(i have also read this is a common thing with phase gear), i do also like the ease of maint with the ss amps, and i tend to gravitate twords vintage styleing, i was thinking about mcintosh, say 2100 series or 2105's but havent heard them and i have no place local to listen to hi end gear circuit city, and best buy all that is around and they cary crap IMO, i do like the music loud at times also. Joe

  19. ---------------- On 3/20/2005 5:42:35 AM heresy2guy wrote: That could be the case. Then again, he might have picked them up from somebody or someplace (that had little knowledge of their true value) as a broken and/or defective set of speakers and he quickly turned them over on Ebay for a big payday. I've heard similar stories by those unfortunate enough to have befallen such a scam. On the flip side, I've heard of people getting good speakers at average prices too (can't say I've seen all that many good "deals" on heritage speakers on Ebay to be honest with you). It just seems like the scammers on Ebay have targeted the high-end audio/video buyers and are pulling quite a number of "fast-ones" on them. There was even an article in the Wall Street Journel on this very issue some months ago. Spending $750 to $2000 plus for Cornwalls on up to Khorns on Ebay, sight unseen and, more importantly--sound UNHEARD--is really taking a gamble. And if you get burned, what then? Most people just put them back on Ebay and sell them to the next unassuming sucker in order to try and break-even, although they usually wind up eating their original shipping costs. And those shipping costs can be $200 to $400! I just think it's sort of like throwing darts at a board. Playing a game of darts when the bet is $50 is one thing. Playing a game of darts blindfolded, when the bet is $750 to $2000, is something altogether different. Still...some people get lucky. ---------------- sure ebay may be a gamble but you have to take in account that new the sspeakers are 3 to 4 times the going rate on ebay and if some minor repairs are in order you are still getting one heck of a deal, i know i have had 2 sets now that i bought where the seller was either a liar (scammer) or blind, but as with my recent la scala'a for 838.00, even with the veneer needed, and thge crossover upgrade i will still be less than half of new cost. scammed or no they are still worth the money after the repairs IMO Joe
  20. i would like to see about upgrading my amps in my system i will have to use the funds from selling the phase linear amps to buy new ones i am guessing iwill have 750.00 or close to spend, i have to be able to run 4 speakers, i dont want to run speakers in series or parallel, have a tube pre, and i think i would prefer to stay with SS amps, but not totally against tube, also would 4 mono amps give better sound ? all suggestions appreciated Joe
  21. thanks for that guys, yes the tweeters are the round magnets, the mid drivers are the push clips type not soldered, i guess these could have been fixed by klipsch but would they have changed the crossovers to a newer version Joe

Now let's start modding them, just kidding. Randy edit, are they not what the seller said they were. a little rougher than what he put out? ---------------- well lets see where to start, his discription "excellent cabinets, original unmolested", during the auction i could see they had been sanded thru the veneer in 2 places so i asked if that was indeed what happened, and if there was any other damage, his reply was they were sanded thru top layer but there is no veneer on these it just went to the next layer(seller obviously knows nothing about wood products) and the rest of the cabs are excellent, after purchase another forum member informed me the mids and the crossover were not original, after picking them up i see the mids are refurbished models stamped with a big ink R on each one, the crossovers are AL< and should be AA, the woofers are the round magnet type, should have been the square in 1977, so his idea of excellent unmolested speakers is both cabs have several chips of the veneer, plus the sand thru, and the only original drivers may be the tweeter not sure as i dont know how to determine the date on them the mid horns are the metal ones at least. awaiting a reply from him as he sent a flunky to meet me when i picked them up, he was a no show I WONDER WHY HMMMMM YOU THINK MAYBE HE KNEW, they still sound good and were a fair buy at 800.00 Joe
  24. here is a pic of the set up (at least what will fit in the pic) Joe
  25. went to new york friday evening met up with the seller this morning(a guy with obvious eyesight problems, or honesty problems jury still out on that) straight thru driving to get back home, set up the la scalas with my pre conceived notion's, "they cant be that much better" go thru all the fun of moving 2 sets cornwalls, a set of heresy's, and of course the la scalas. put the la scalas where the corns were setting (get a good A-B comparison) put on the last album i had listened to before the trip, sounds pretty d#$% good, next put in a cd i hace been listening to quite alot willie nelsons greatest track 1 blue eyes crying in the rain. then it hits me hey willie is singing harmony in that verse, never heard that before not even with the cornwalls and the heresy on top, so i guess the immediate verdict is they are that much better!!!!!!!, now one big question i have is about the supposed lack of bass, these thing rock the whole house is vibrating, setting in my listening chair i can feel the bass in my chest, couldnt feel that before either, la scalas have officially replaced cornwalls as the main speakers in the 2 channell set up although i am running 4 speakers with 2 amps la scala's, and cornwalls atop them. sounds great now my neighbors will really hate meHE HE HE HE!!!!!!!!! Joe
