  1. I would take 4 at least. XXL for me -- white or grey -- keep it simple with just logo on front. XL for hairy, guitar playing teenage sons -- black with copper logo on front "A Legend in Sound" on the back would be cool. I am another one that would love to see a high quality baseball cap as well.
  2. Do you mean after my avocado green Zenith alarm clock radio? I remember listening to the military draft lottery during the Vietnam war late at night on that one. My first "stereo" was a Panasonic record changer in an enormous wood cabinet with a pair of cheap built in 6 inch speakers. I remember the first thing I listened to was Bill Cosby's "Why is there air?" First separate speakers would be ESS bookshelves. I managed to melt (no exaggeration) the Heil air motion mid-tweeters within 2 days. A Sansui 9090 and Jeff Beck will do that. Returned those under warranty and upgraded to the ESS amt series. Kept those for only a month or so until I discovered Altec Lansing VOTT. I can't remember which model #. But it would be 1977, just before they came out with the Tangerine Plugs for the high frequency drivers. Kept those all through college and into the mid-eighties. Did a poor job at refinishing them trying to get them to look little more like home speakers. The bizarre thing is I believe they are now owned by a member of this forum! I think Tom Brennan (TBrennan) now owns them, I have tried PMing him but he hasn't been online since November. I would love to hear from him and fill him in with the history of a great pair of Altecs. Mid-eighties I auditioned my first Klipsch still have every one I have ever purchased. 1988 K-Horns 1988 Chorus 1995 KG 2.5 ? year used Academy and just received 3 weeks ago... a pair of Heresy III The real question is... what will be next?
  3. Everything recommended so far probably should be considered essential. Three more to consider though, maybe for numbers 6, 7, and 8... The Legendary Oscar Peterson Trio Live at the Blue Note (available on Telarc) Wade In The Water - Ramsey Lewis The Blues And The Abstract Truth - Oliver Nelson I envy you for the discovery you are about to make Jim
  4. Thanks everyone - This is the answer I got from the Denon 2910 thread on AVS; "This is just a selection so that you have the option of what piece of equipment does the color space conversion for you. But there may be more to it then that. HDMI is capable of outputting up to 12 bit YCbCr so depending on the video processing, it may be better to output YCbCr and let the display convert to RGB at whatever bit depth it handles. Usually the more information you give a display to work with, the better. So I would recommend outputting YCbCr to be on the safe side. There is a chance that the color space conversion may not be as good in the display but you could always switch between and compare for yourself. " "Basically it comes down to: do you want the RGB conversion to be handled by the Denon or your TV? If you have a good TV, let it do it." Jim
  5. Thanks travisc, I did post to the Denon 2910 thread at AVS about the same time as here. I received an answer - it is amazing to me that Denon provides minimal description as to what the two choices are for. This Klipsch site is one of my favorite spots to visit every day - I find the members to be very helpful - but mostly it is interesting to share an appreciation for such great speakers - Thanks again, Jim
  6. I posted this question on the HT Guide.com Forum yesterday and haven't received a response. I am posting it here in the hope that one of my Klipsch brethren could be of help. "I have just received a Denon 2910 DVD and hooked it up to my Panasonic 61 inch rear proj. LCD using the HDMI connections. I am using a digital optical connection for audio to my Rotel RSP 1068 pre-pro. THe Denon 2910 allows two HDMI choices for video setup: HDMI Y Cb Cr or HDMI RGB Which one do I use? There is very little description in the operating instructions Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Flannj" By the way I have a pair of black Heresy III on order which I will be using as rears in my still incomplete 5.1 HT - they are supposed to arrive next week - I will post my impressions. Happy New Year to all, Jim
  7. TBrennan, Did you strip and finish your Altec cabinets? I had the EXACT same speakers for about 15 years. I eventually stripped off the gray paint and underlying glued on paper layer (MDF?) What a long messy job that was. Then stained them much like yours. Mine were missing the screen in the bass bins as well. I have lost track of where mine ended up. Looking at that picture is giving me the weirdest sense of deja vu. Those speakers were a major contributor to my poor academic performance in college. I am very curious as to the history of your VOT's. This is freaking me out - Jim
  8. Amy, Can you give us any idea as to when orders can / will be taken for the new Heritage lineup? When will prices be set? How soon might these units ship? etc... etc... I stopped by my local Klipsch dealer on Friday and they had little information. The rears channels in my HT setup are crying out for a pair of black Heresy III's. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim
  9. Jump Into the Fire by Harry Nilsson on the Nilsson Schmilsson album. Great bass line all through the song, except during the drum solo (which by itself is a great test for any system). And then at the end of the drum solo the bass line comes rolling and rumbling back in. Best... Bass line... Ever.
  10. Brought my 2 teenage sons to their first NHRA event this weekend. Final eliminations at the Carquest Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet. Spent the first couple of hours pre-race walking through the pit area and getting up close to the teams working on the cars. Standing 3 feet from John Force and listening to him chat with the crowd. The NHRA understands what it means to be fan friendly. The first time the boys heard one of the Top Fuels fire up in the pits they were standing just 20 feet away and nearly jumped out of their skin - but the smiles on their faces made my day right there. The first round of eliminations were for Top Fuel, we had seats just before the 60' mark just 14 rows up, and the boys smiles got even bigger as they watched both cars go through their burnouts. Then pre-stage...stage...tree goes green and WHAM. Two 7000+ hp, 0 to 330 mph rockets THUNDER (not a strong enough word) by in 4.5 seconds. They nearly soiled themselves and I laughed my *** off watching them react. Eyes burning and slowly becoming covered in little bits of tire rubber we watched round after round of incredible machinery and even more incredible driving. I can't even imagine being enclosed under the body work of a Funny Car with that engine just inches in front of you and being able to keep the car under control. Great facility, great machinery, great driving. All in all a great day. It has been years since I have been to the drags and I would recommend the experience to anyone. Unfortunately there is no audio system in the world that could duplicate the sound and sensory overload even with a wall of Klipshorns. Also unbelievable people watching, as we were leaving my 14 year old son said to me in his best Ralph Wiggum imitation "people that come to drag races make tatoo parlors rich and orthodontists poor".

  13. Sorry about the same reply to 2 different posts. I pulled the trigger yesterday. Impulse buying? Who me? I visited my local Rotel dealer and liked what I saw and heard. A great thing about living in the Chicagoland area is easy access to multiple dealers of all sorts of equipment. Bought a RMB-1095 amplifier and a RSP-1068 pre pro. $3100 for the package before sales tax. High sales tax is a bad thing about living here. Compared to buying the Sunfire demo I still get 200 watts per x 5. But I get brand new unused equipment with a longer warranty. Separates as opposed to a receiver (good for future pre pro upgrades). All for 200 bucks less. What I definitely heard was a lower noise floor on the Rotels. What I imagined I heard was a little less strain at high power levels. Unfortunately I also get a lot more heat and size with them as well. Although I liked the Sunfire quite a bit and from what I know and have experienced with my own Carver equipment they are well built and reliable. I am wondering if Sunfire may be pricing themselves a little too high with their recent increases. I found the Rotel dealer to be very low pressure and knowledgeable as was the Sunfire dealer. So, here is how my developing 5.1 system stands. Rotel electronics, Chorus mains, Academy center, KG 2.5 rears and Velodyne DD-18 subwoofer. Panasonic 61 inch DLP. All getting ready to be placed in a currently being constructed basement. Gramas701, I understand your reservations about DLP and chip issues but I dont have much choice in this case. My father-in-law is a Panasonic distributor and he can save me A LOT on this new unit coming out in May (beggars cant be choosers). The DVD has yet to be decided. So now I have a basement storage area filled with cool equipment that I cant hook up yet. Thanks for the commentary everyone.

  15. I am shopping for electronics for a new basement HT. My local Sunfire dealer has a demo Ultimate Receiver for sale. It has been on their floor for about 13 months and it is very clean. It has updated software and will be sold in its original box with a full warranty. This is a reliable dealer that I have purchased all of my Klipsch products from (K-horns, Choruses, Academy, and KG 2.5's). I just spent an hour playing with it in their showroom and I like the product very much. They want $3300. More than the used units on e-bay and Audiogon. Less than new units from the dealers on Price Tool. I am not desperate to make a purchase yet but I wouldn't want a good opportunity to slip away. So what do you think of this price? I am interested in as many opinions as possible. Thanks, flannj
  16. I am a long time Klipsch owner and am in the process of finishing my basement. This means lots of choices to be made and questions to be answered. At this point I own two black Choruses that I will be using for front speakers one black academy for the center channel. Also I just purchased a black Velodyne DD-18 subwoofer. I also have a pair of black KG 2.5's that I could use for the rear surrounds. I am limiting myself to a 5.1 system due to the Wife Factor (an additional 2 speakers would probably result in my head being shaped like a frying pan). At his point I am considering either Rotel or Sunfire electronics. I really like the Rotel RMB-195 and feel it would be a good choice to drive this system. But I am comfortable with Bob Carvers products. In either case I am not set in my choices for electronics. The TV will probably be a Panasonic 60 inch DLP. Question #1 - Are the KG2.5 a good choice for the rears? I know Fortes or Choruses would be a better match but their size is larger than I would like for that location in the room. A bookshelf size would be a better fit physically. I assume 2 more Academys would work but they are getting bit overpriced and I would want them to be flawless in appearance. Question #2 - Opinions on the electronics (also DVD player). More questions will follow. I am impressed with the level of expertise on this site and welcome any comments or advice. Thanks in advance, Flannj (I also have a pair of black K-Horns in my family room driven by a Carver M-1.0t and the KG2.5's are currently in the kitchen hooked to the family room system and driven by a separate M-1.0t amplifier.)
