  1. Pop, as I said YMMV, but that's not my experience and when talking to someone who was supposedly expert on veneer, he said that one of the problems with contact cement is tearing apart the veneer because it contracts when it dries. I'm sure it doesn't happen every time or noone would use the method but it does happen. If I wanted to get into veneering big time, I'd have to get a vacuum press and use those materials but I'm not at that point yet so I'm just going to try a different method.
  2. I'm really surprised to hear someone say something bad about etymotics' sound quality. I have the ER4S earphones and think that they are leagues better than Apple's meager offering. As it happens, I'm selling mine but that's because I'm just not using them as I had thought. I had great intentions of running but that just isn't coming to pass. But I can definitely say that I think the sound quality is wonderful.
  3. Thanks guys. The one thing that I know that I don't want to use is contact cement. It dries and tears the veneer apart. YMMV.
  4. I remember seeing a post with pics and info about using a "new" method to veneer. As I remember, it was titebond glue maybe yellow glue (?) and an iron to melt/set the glue. Does anyone have a link to what I'm talking about? Thanks.
  5. I've heard Chorus speakers and own Cornwalls. I'd have to say that the Chorus is a very good speaker.
  6. I'm running a MC-240 and MX-110 through Cornwalls. My musical tastes span jazz, rock, and classical. I don't do heavy metal, rap or C&W. I can't believe how great the Corns sound particularly with jazz. I picked up the Corns for a good price and really didn't think that I would keep them because they are large in my small home. They are still here because they've earned their spot in the house. Rearrange the room but get the Cornwalls.
  7. Per AL K, his XO design is for use on Cornwall 1s and won't work on Corn 2's. He said that it's due to the different tweeter in the 2 - K-79.
  8. Hi JW, I got your e-mail and PM. I have to think about it. I've been drinking Booker's all evening and I'm amazed that I can type. I may be slow tomorrow too.
  9. Dean, thanks for the schematic. Hardhead, Thanks for the info. Been there and done that info is exactly what I was hoping to find out. I haven't specifically priced the Al K crossovers yet but it sounds like it could be a good way to go. I love my Corns and hope to push them on to even bigger and better things )
  10. Yes, Bob seems to be a good guy, but I was wanting to rebuild it myself.
  11. I'm contemplating my Cornwall XO (1983, B3 Network, K-77-M, K-52-K, K-33E) and what I want to do with it. I could just try and replace inductors and caps with like values or I could go for a new design like AL K's. Actually Al K seems to have had an original design for Corns and Heresy's and then modded that design for Corns only. Has anyone done the Al K XO - either version? Any recommendations? Thanks.
  12. I agree that I would rather have a great set of speakers fed by OK amp/preamp rather than an OK set of speakers fed by a great amp/preamp. Speakers are critical but it isn't as if the source doesn't matter. I had a very good s/s system, tried tubes and now I'm all tubes so it's obvious to me that there is a difference in source. Although I have not had a chance to try out many tube units, those that I have sound differently even with the same speakers. Every piece in the system plays its part. That part may not be equal but still be significant.
  13. 4 MC-60's! Sounds like you're doing great on the amp front. It was a stretch for me getting one MC-240 and an MX-110 - but I love'em! S/S - even very good S/S - just doesn't sound the same after some good tubes. I haven't delved into the hi line CD players yet but have kept my eyes open when people were talking about them as someday I would like to get one too. You might want to take a look at the Jolida JD100 or Njoe Tjoeb which are both tube cd players which can be had for $1000 or less depending on how many mods have been done. Enjoy your Mcs!
  14. Bad taste in movies, but good taste in speakers!
  15. There are certainly some good tube preamps out there but I don't know what "thru the roof" price is to you. Maybe you ought to give a good receiver or integrated tube amp a try and see what you think - then there's quite a range of good choices at "reasonable" prices - such as Fisher 500C, and Scott 299C. Comparable quality to those two in a new unit would be many times the cost. Those old receivers/integrateds used some good quality iron. There are also separates in Scott and Fisher but I'm not as familiar with them. Then there's a Bottlehead preamp which is a modern design but at a reasonable price. I don't know if you have any good radio stations nearby but the tube tuners have got me listening to the radio more than I did with the S/S unit that I had...and it was considered to be a good S/S tuner. I hope that you do check out tubes. I wondered what people were talking about, tried it and now have basically junked my S/S outfit for tubes. Try it, you'll like it. )
  16. I had thought about getting rid of my vinyl more than once as I hadn't been listening to it for quite a while but hearing everyone talk about their records got me to listening to mine again and I'm enjoying them. I even purchased a few recently at a garage sale. I have a decent table and cartridge for my main unit but was hoping to pick up someting relatively cheap for a secondary system. It seems like cheap and TTs just don't go together too well. I guess we low budget types will have to get lucky.
  17. I'm looking for a TT too so though I'd try to keep this thread alive. I'd like to replace a TT in a console and end up with a good secondary system so appearance and dustcovers don't mean much and I'd be looking to keep it under $150. Obviously, for that budget it needs to be vintage which is fine since it's going in a vintage console. Any other specific recommendations besides Thorens160?
  18. The Forte IIs are really nice speakers too. Better in the bass department than Heresy's I think. Of course, you can really never have too much Klipsch - vintage or otherwise.
  19. That would seem about right . The guy said that he had purchased them in 1984. What do they call the textured black finish?
  20. I just purchased a pair of Heresy's today so it looks like I've got a Klipsch constellation now! The serial numbers are 1G8Y831 (I'm not sure if that's a G or a 6) and 1G8Y850. The finish is a textured black and the grills are black. I have seen the veneer finishes before but this is something else. The guy had pulled the stickers off of the back at some point so there's no info from that. Anybody know anything about these from the serial numbers? Thanks.
  21. I have e-mailed e-bay customer support so we'll see if they care enough to remove a fraudulent listing. I hope that they do but I can't say that I've heard good things about e-bay protecting buyers. I guess we'll find out if they do something and have him change his listing.
  22. I'm not going to do business with him but thought that this was incorrect. Seems like he's already been told and wants to do the wrong thing.
