Hi there. Where can I pick up a replacement diaphram for the Forte1 midrange? Thanks

I disagree. The few times I have followed CR's advice, they have been shockingly dead on. I picked my vacuum cleaner and car by them. The vacuum cleaner is a Eureka Boss. It is clearly better than any vacuum cleaner Ive ever used. Period. The car is a Lexus GS300. I bought it because of the repair history . I've got 82k miles on it now and nothing has broken on it yet.

Consumer Reports rates the noise from refrigerators. Going into clipping becomes both obvious and painful with SS but not with the tubes. ---------------- Gotcha... Yes, that was a good point of the article too. The tube amps and the solid state amps sound approximately identical under clipping. Therefore there are two things occuring: 1) When the tube amp clips, it sounds more tolerable than when a solid state amp clips. 2) When the tube amp plays a transient, it is capable of spiking MUCH higher than the solid state amp. Either way, I think this makes a good case for using high sensitivity speakers and/or high power amps, in order to maintain a very large amount of headroom for transients. (even though you won't use that power for 99% of your music) I think it agrees with what DeanG and NOSValves have been pushing on here all along... Higher power just plain sounds better (as long as the amp has a low noise floor) In fact, two of the best systems Ive ever heard were running MONSTER amps. One had 500w Boulder monoblocks, and the other had Classe's flagship monoblocks (big monsters). Of course, the amps probably all cost $10k a channel, but I think they are onto something with the power-overkill.

His measurements show that the tube amps, and in particular the SET amp ACTUALLY ARE Louder, not just in perception, but in reality. But they are only capable of getting louder for transients. The tube amp is capable of getting about 2x louder during a transient than it can during a steady tone, and the SET amp is able to get almost 4 times as loud as it can with a steady tone. However, I suppose in theory, you could just buy an amp that is 4 times as large and get approximately the same thing. I highly recommend reading the article. Its very good.

Not to change the subject, but isn't the Forte one of the most flat klipsch speakers?

An interesting note: All of those audio files are stolen directly from the CHESKY ULTIMATE DEMONSTRATION DISC. In fact, the disk itself has a explanation track between each song, where the announcer says pretty much the same notes that are typed in the post above... The disc was meant to be used to evaluate audio equipment. I think it might be out of print, but you can probably pick up a copy used on half.com, ebay, or amazon.com. Somehow, I think they are lying when they say they came from a "smoke free home". These guys are clearly smoking _something_.

Ok, here are a couple of reasons that you didnt get $999 for yours: 1) Local pickup only hurts sales. This cuts down your possible sales dramatically. It is much more difficult to sell when you do not ship. 2) Pictures are important. People want to feel confident that they are getting something that is in good condition, not an old roachy set that have been around the block. 3) Though I tend to trust those that post on the Klipsch forums, good ebay feedback increases the value of your stuff. When someone has taken the time to get 200+ happy sales, then you know they wont want to throw that good rating away by ripping you off. Of course, making the sale local-pickup-only helps in that respect, but then you go back to my rule #1. HOWEVER: in your case, I would be willing to not get top dollar to avoid shipping. Since your speakers are in perfect condition, I wouldnt ship them and accept the fact that it will take longer to sell them (or accept less money for them). Especially being Cornwalls. Those are both huge and highly desirable. Put photos up of them. You will sell them much more quickly.

Apparently Klipsch labeled the Fortes at 4, 6 and 8 ohms, depending on their mood. All of those values are essentially true, since the impedance varies between all of those values. Treating it like a 4 ohm speaker sounds the best to me. This kinda makes me laugh, since it makes me think about those guys who put $1000 inch-thick power cables on their amp, which then, two inches down in the circuit, runs all the power through a fuse with a filiment that is maybe .25 mm wide. Hah.

If you go into a Circuit City or Best Buy and listen to one of demo systems, you will probably be appalled. Most sound like large boom boxes. Then think about this: Most people under 30 have NEVER HEARD good audio, unless it was a friend's dad's system. Why would they even want good audio? They don't even know that it exists! If they had a decent showroom with some decent equipment, and it might give some consumers the idea that they might like good audio. The high-end industry could use that. I just hope that Bestbuy puts a high-end showroom near me.
