  1. Hi there. Where can I pick up a replacement diaphram for the Forte1 midrange? Thanks
  2. I disagree. The few times I have followed CR's advice, they have been shockingly dead on. I picked my vacuum cleaner and car by them. The vacuum cleaner is a Eureka Boss. It is clearly better than any vacuum cleaner Ive ever used. Period. The car is a Lexus GS300. I bought it because of the repair history . I've got 82k miles on it now and nothing has broken on it yet.
  3. Consumer Reports rates the noise from refrigerators. Here is a summary of fridges with the best rating: Bottom Freezers: LG LRFC25750 $1650 Fisher and Paykel E522B $1050 Side by Sides: Kenmore (Sears) 5653<2> CR Best Buy 5/5 $1200 GE Profile Arctica PSH23PGR $1200 LG LRSC26960 $2050 KitchenAid Superba KSCS25IN $2400 Samsung Select Series RS2630 $950 KitchenAid KSSC42QM $5815 GE Monogram ZISS420DR $6500 None of the top freezer models got their top rating for low noise... But there were several nearly as high rated models: Whirlpool ET8FTEXM $540 Kenmore (Sears) 7425<2> $700 GE Profile PTS22LHR $1020 Enjoy.

Hmmmm.... Looks damn good for a 36 year old. I guess she has to starve herself.

We will A/B the Panasonic Class D and Van Alstine modified Craig fixed ST-70 both using the Panasonic as an integrated as well as feeding it the Super PAS4 vacuum tube preamp (that should get confusing...but fun!) to see what we hear. ---------------- I'll be looking forward to that. I currently am using a rebuilt Dynaco 70 for my home theatre and am thinking to replace it with a Panasonic (to cut down on heat and power draw, and to move the Dynaco back to my two-channel system in the home office, where it sounds AWESOME) If the panasonic can hold its own against the dynaco, Ill be buying one.
  6. ---------------- therefore - a tube amp will APPEAR to play louder because despite the fact that is almost certainly is clipping the listener cant tell. In other words a 10 watt set amp will play EXACTLY as loud as a 10 watt SS amp if we stay below clipping level. Going into clipping becomes both obvious and painful with SS but not with the tubes. ---------------- Gotcha... Yes, that was a good point of the article too. The tube amps and the solid state amps sound approximately identical under clipping. Therefore there are two things occuring: 1) When the tube amp clips, it sounds more tolerable than when a solid state amp clips. 2) When the tube amp plays a transient, it is capable of spiking MUCH higher than the solid state amp. Either way, I think this makes a good case for using high sensitivity speakers and/or high power amps, in order to maintain a very large amount of headroom for transients. (even though you won't use that power for 99% of your music) I think it agrees with what DeanG and NOSValves have been pushing on here all along... Higher power just plain sounds better (as long as the amp has a low noise floor) In fact, two of the best systems Ive ever heard were running MONSTER amps. One had 500w Boulder monoblocks, and the other had Classe's flagship monoblocks (big monsters). Of course, the amps probably all cost $10k a channel, but I think they are onto something with the power-overkill.
  7. ---------------- On 6/21/2005 8:23:15 AM maxg wrote: The premise is therefore that clipping is so benign on a tube amp (single ended in this case - not so sure for PP amps) that the listener simply doesnt notice and therefore claims that the thing plays louder. Therefore tube watts go further than SS watts. ---------------- I don't mean to be rude, but I highly recommend that you read the article. His measurements show that the tube amps, and in particular the SET amp ACTUALLY ARE Louder, not just in perception, but in reality. But they are only capable of getting louder for transients. The tube amp is capable of getting about 2x louder during a transient than it can during a steady tone, and the SET amp is able to get almost 4 times as loud as it can with a steady tone. However, I suppose in theory, you could just buy an amp that is 4 times as large and get approximately the same thing. I highly recommend reading the article. Its very good.
  8. Not to change the subject, but isn't the Forte one of the most flat klipsch speakers?

And that BOTHERS me when he is trying to INSTRUCT all of us about how best to enjoy MUSIC. I think it's crap. ---------------- I wouldn't worry about it. 1) It can't ALWAYS be about the music. 2) This is a discussion board about audio equipment, not music. 3) He is not trying to instruction how to ENJOY the music, but instead, how to listen to your audio equipment. (which is fine) However, I see where you are coming from. I find that people that prefer Klipsch tend to be less interested in listening to the equipment, and more interested in enjoying music. If you want to be bored and analyze the quality of the audio reproduction instead of just enjoying the music, get yourself a set of Martin Logans or some other sort of boring snoozefest.
  10. An interesting note: All of those audio files are stolen directly from the CHESKY ULTIMATE DEMONSTRATION DISC. In fact, the disk itself has a explanation track between each song, where the announcer says pretty much the same notes that are typed in the post above... The disc was meant to be used to evaluate audio equipment. I think it might be out of print, but you can probably pick up a copy used on half.com, ebay, or amazon.com. That way you don't have to listen to an MP3, and you can actually hear some of the things it recommends. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0006AZL4Y/qid=1118945668/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl15/102-6906770-9272910?v=glance&s=music&n=507846
  11. Somehow, I think they are lying when they say they came from a "smoke free home". These guys are clearly smoking _something_.
  12. Ok, here are a couple of reasons that you didnt get $999 for yours: 1) Local pickup only hurts sales. This cuts down your possible sales dramatically. It is much more difficult to sell when you do not ship. 2) Pictures are important. People want to feel confident that they are getting something that is in good condition, not an old roachy set that have been around the block. 3) Though I tend to trust those that post on the Klipsch forums, good ebay feedback increases the value of your stuff. When someone has taken the time to get 200+ happy sales, then you know they wont want to throw that good rating away by ripping you off. Of course, making the sale local-pickup-only helps in that respect, but then you go back to my rule #1. HOWEVER: in your case, I would be willing to not get top dollar to avoid shipping. Since your speakers are in perfect condition, I wouldnt ship them and accept the fact that it will take longer to sell them (or accept less money for them). Especially being Cornwalls. Those are both huge and highly desirable. Put photos up of them. You will sell them much more quickly.
  13. Apparently Klipsch labeled the Fortes at 4, 6 and 8 ohms, depending on their mood. All of those values are essentially true, since the impedance varies between all of those values. Treating it like a 4 ohm speaker sounds the best to me. This kinda makes me laugh, since it makes me think about those guys who put $1000 inch-thick power cables on their amp, which then, two inches down in the circuit, runs all the power through a fuse with a filiment that is maybe .25 mm wide. Hah.

And yes, truly sweet home theatre.

I will stick to those that have served me over the years and ARE pros... Heritage, IMHO is what Klipsch is, at least for me..... ---------------- Well, though I really like the boutique hi-end shops and the service they provide also, this is a great step forward. If you go into a Circuit City or Best Buy and listen to one of demo systems, you will probably be appalled. Most sound like large boom boxes. Then think about this: Most people under 30 have NEVER HEARD good audio, unless it was a friend's dad's system. Why would they even want good audio? They don't even know that it exists! If they had a decent showroom with some decent equipment, and it might give some consumers the idea that they might like good audio. The high-end industry could use that. I just hope that Bestbuy puts a high-end showroom near me.
  16. Which tap did you use on the Dynaco? I found that the 8 ohm tap makes the speakers far too hot in the treble in my room. The 4 ohm taps fixes the frequency response greatly. BUT, my room is far too large, and it sucks the bass out so when I use the 8 ohm tap, the treble sounds even brighter. I have a fairly 'live' room that is enormous. 30ft by 25ft with 11ft ceilings and open to 2 hallways and a 9x5 entry.
  17. In a room that small, just about anything will sound like it has good bass. I have a pair of NHT Super Zeros Minimonitors (3.5 inch woofer) and they sound very acceptable in my home office. In a large room, they have zero ... ZERO bass. In the same small room, my ProAC 2.5s, which only have a 7 inch woofer sound HUGE and will rock with a 35 watt amp. You will not lack for bass in your room. However, since you can't crank it up (which is the raison dêtre of Heritage Klipsch) you are going to miss some of the fun. Someday, when you move to the suburbs, you are going to have fun annoying your neighbors.
  18. Wow! I just got the new diaphrams and took about 10 minutes to install them! I cant believe that it is that easy to rebuild your speakers! Klipsch does a hell of a lot of things right. Thanks guys!
  19. Is this what they mean when they say that Klipsch speakers are "bright"?
  20. Nevermind. Bob emailed me an explained that a new diaphram will fix it right up! He has two of them ready to send to me tomorrow! This forum is great! Thanks everyone.

Order a pair of titanium diaphragms (as Frzninvt suggested) if one is needed. ---------------- When I swapped the tweeters, the good tweeter played fine in the cabinet that contained the bad tweeter, so the crossover is fine. The ohm meter reads 26 Megaohms. Is that normal when the diaphram is busted?
  23. Is the diaphram the only thing that ever goes bad on the tweeters? Or is it possible that I will replace the diaphram and it still not work? Thanks

Clip the amp? ---------------- Im pretty sure it happened when I bumped the preamp cables when switching the inputs (its a Bottlehead Foreplay). One of the cables was loose or has a short in it and I got a good long full power BUZZZZTTT!!! until I figured out what the heck was happening. At the time I had a 90 watt NAD amp attached to them. I noticed the lack of tweet shortly after. Also, I got the speakers only a few days ago, so Ive been rocking out at insane levels... that may have contributed. I still cant believe how 'live' these speakers sound.

Are you saying I can modify the way my speakers sound by using different diaphrams?
