  1. I just saw the Toshiba HD-DVD player in the Crutchfield catalog for $499. I think that Sony's plan to incorporate Blu-Ray playback into the upcoming PS3 gives Blu-Ray a giant edge over HD-DVD.
  2. It doesn't seem like there are many fans of dispersion surround speakers. Surround speakers always seem so under-utilized. I'm actually kind of happy that I won't be using the Heresy's as surrounds-- they deserve better.
  3. I have a pair of Forte's for mains and an Academy center. I'm going to build a theater in my basement and looking at the planned room configuration it appears that I'll need to wall mount the surrounds. I have a pair of Heresy's that I was planning to use as rear surrounds but they're just too big to mount on the walls (at least where I'd have to mount them). What would be some decent matches for my Forte's? They will simply be used to reproduce surround effects. I don't plan on using them for any 5-channel music. I'm leaning towards a the RS series. Any ideas?
  4. I bought an old Soundcraftsmen. Why do tube amps have better bass? The Soundcraftsmen blows away my Rotel. Made a big difference with the bass response on the Heresy's.
  5. how far does the sound travel throughout the house? I'm a little worried that I won't be able to turn it up when the family is asleep.
  6. I have a pair of black Forte's made in '86 and they are also listed at 4 ohms on the cap.
  7. No, there aren't different settings for the phono. I connected it to the mag inputs.
  8. I recently purchased a Soundcraftsmen model 5050 amp/preamp from Ebay. The amp work's wonderful when using the Aux input but when I hooked up my turntable I noticed that I wasn't getting any low frequency from the output. I connected the turntable to another amp and it was fine. Any ideas on what the problem may be? The output from the amp was definitely compromised.
  9. I need to build a "front wall" for the theater so they'll be attached to the screen wall (which will actually be a small room for storage and my equipment rack.
  10. Anyone heard of this? I'm planning on building an IB subwoofer for my home theater. I just received 4 15" subwoofers from Acoustic Elegance. I'm going to build a manifold with 2 sets of drivers on each side firing at each other and powered by a Behringer 2500 pro amp. Not including the OSB and plywood I've spent $800 for the subwoofer.
  11. The seller had the amp checked out by a tech prior to the sale (he even included the receipt). My wife can't hear the difference-- oh well! I would appreciate some opinions on the following: I was planning to use my Heresy's as rears in a HT 5.1 setup for movies and DVD-A and SACD listening. I also need a pair of speakers in our family room for 2-channel listening. Should I use the Heresy's in the family room or keep the Heresy's in the HT setup and buy another pair for the family room. The Heresy's are as large as I'd go for the family room. My wife would prefer bookshelf speakers for the family room but I won't be using a subwoofer. Any ideas?
  12. I bought an old Soundcraftsmen model 5150 on Ebay. It's hard to get info on the Soundcraftsmen tube gear-- they're late 60's - early 70's SS stuff seems to be the collector's choice; however, I plugged this in yesterday and connected my Samsung DVD player to listen to some CD's. I connected my Heresy II's to the amp and was pleasantly surprised when the tubes lit up and music came bouncing out of those Heresy's. Even more surprising was how much bass it seemed to push through those Heresy's. Then I connected the Forte's. Wow! The bass was amazing. I played Diana Krall-- the upright bass was crystal clear and extremely detailed. Now I need a turntable! That amp sounds better than the Rotel 1068/1075 pair i just bought for my theater. I am now a converted tube believer!

  14. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5779429578 Anyone have an opinion on these Cornwalls listed on Ebay-- they're not to far from my home. First pair I've seen in Jersey!
  15. I won't be using a subwoofer. Just looking for a pair of speakers on the smaller side. I think my Heresy II's are a little too big.
  16. I'm looking for a pair of bookshelf/monitor speakers for our family room. Here's the deal: My wife has the decorating bug and the "WAF" for these speakers is going to factor into the decision. I'm looking for a pair of small speakers for 2-channel music somewhere around $1000 pair. Any ideas?
  17. Rich's description of the Academy was completely accurate. I can wholeheartedly endorse Rich's depiction of his merchandise and his willingness to facilitate a transaction. I bought a pair of Heresy II's and an Academy from Rich and they were exactly as advertised. Rich is a good guy-- you can't go wrong!
  18. I liked Bo because his song choices paid homage to some great American singers (David Clayton Thomas and Gregg Allman).
  19. All this TV bashing seems a little silly. I enjoy American Idol but I do remind myself throughout the program how manipulative the producers and sponsors can be. There are some outstanding TV shows-- in my opinion (for what little that may be worth). I'll rattle a few off: PBS Frontline-- the best news magazine on TV. What 60 Minutes wishes it was. HBO's Deadwood-- Takes a few watches to pick up all the subtle nuances seemingly contained in each line of dialogue. Lost-- Kind of a modern Twilight Zone/ Amazing Stories hybrid. Curb Your Enthusiasm-- just watch the "From Hell" episode. Homicide-- Okay it's no longer on but watch the reruns on Bravo-- especially the ones that make use of Andre Braugher's talents. If you get a chance watch the episode that details a man pinned by a subway train-- hard to find a better written 50 minutes of entertainment. It's not all crap!

His speaker cables are nothing more than 12 ga mag wire with spade connectors. I have been making my own IC's by wraping 24 ga mag wire around 3/8 caulk backer and terminating them into Eichman (sp) bullet plugs. I am not sure that this is worth the while. My intor to altec horns was a trip to the ChiTown horn meet where one guty was driving his A7's with a Gainclone and using 24 ga twisted pairs terminated with Rat Shack RCA's. Not bad. Jim N ---------------- Huh? What'd he say?
  21. You're in luck--the results are on Wednesday night!

I originally thought I should get the AR of my projector but not so. With so many DVDs at 1:85 or 2:35 it really is nice getting a full picture top to bottom no matter what the image is. Check out my earlier thread on this http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=59705 Good luck and keep the questions coming, Rich ---------------- [/blockquote Rich, For $500 (while supplies last) Panamorph is selling its discontinued anamorphic lens. Put that in front of your projector's lens and you'll not only lose the black bars on the side but improve image quality on 2:35 films!

I'm very pleased that you know a lot of stuff, but it's a pity you can't communicate. Einstein's maxim that if you can't explain it to an eight year old, you don't know what you're talking about (paraphrased) comes to mind. Now if you've got something helpful to say, write on. Otherwise spare us your wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending of garments, and wild gesticulating in despair at being unable to elevate the great acoustically unwashed masses. ---------------- I must disagree--Dragonfyr's point comes through loud and clear. Now I can't attribute this quote to anyone in particular but I'm quite certain that someone once said that we only interpret that which we are predisposed to understand and agree with. Dragonfyr's argument centered around the "cookie cutter" approach to room treatments so often advanced in forums similar to this one. Of course he also took broad aim at a variety of other "electronics boutique" tenets-- cables, crossover modifications, ...etc. I think this stuff can be a little overwhelming at times. I imagine that I'm not alone in searching for a simple solution to our HT room's various nulls and modes. I took offense at a poster in the AVS forum because his first response to a poster who had the temerity to ask a question about in-wall speaker placement was to question his knowledge of the topic and send him out in search of a design engineer. I found that response to be somewhat arrogant and dismissive -- I do not equate that with Dragonfyr's response-- just pointing out that those seeking advice on forums such as these are in search of a DIY solution. I understand Dragonfyr's response and appreciate that he took the time to explain his position. Who could argue the fact that a trained professional would offer a better solution than one could find from HT forums or reference books? I just can't get past the notion that I want to design and implement every aspect of my proposed theater. Hopefully when I'm finished my satisfaction with having done it myself will outweigh any acoustic inadequacies. Also, I promise not to spend a $1000 on cables!
  24. You know what I find funny? When I was younger I followed bands and tracked new releases and I always thought I would be aware of what was happening with contemporary music. Then there's marriage and a daughter and work and then one day I'm thumbing through Rolling Stone at the barber and I realize the following: I don't know who any of these people are! When did I get so old?
  25. I am a big ELP fan. I even like Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman from Love Beach. Haven't herad that in years, though. I read somewhere once that Jimi Hendrix wanted to play with ELP before he died. Ever listen to any of the old King Crimson?
