first question...do you like the way the cornwalls sound with your old receiver? if so...enjoy and don´t worry about "upgrading"...some of us found that the Klipsch speakers forced us to look for upgraded electronics, but not all. I found that my adcom amplifier sounded way too bright and bothered me over long music sessions with my Klipschorns, so I began looking for new preamps and amps...now I have a $500 pair of Dynaco monoblocks which sounded much better to me with the k-horns and a marantz 7T preamp ($300), I am still in the market for a tube preamp and maybe someday a SET tube amp...however part of this is the "hobby" aspect of classic audio gear, not a dire necessity...I would say that these horn speakers do tend to match well with tube gear, though they can be ruthlessly revealing of noisy electronics...so...you can use the cornwalls as the cornerstone of a audio collecting hobby (which you wife may curse me for suggesting)or simply establish some upstream electronics that sound good to you and enjoy! Best of luck and welcome to the klipsch family. BTW if you decide you will not keep these "wife unfriendly" big speakers, I will guarantee you a 100% profit! Tony

don't forget to check out the C-31V...audioclassics has it for $895.50...and it looks sweet! why go for the 34 or 35?

I have a Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner...besides protecting from spikes it is supposed to clean and filter the AC coming in and prevent interaction between components via AC...however any possible improvment in sound has been extremely minor, hard to detect...the money should be spent to protect your equipment not if you expect some big improvement in sound..YMMV...however after hearng so much about the PS Audio AC regenerator I am again attracted to tweaking the AC...perhaps that is the way to go?...regards, tony

I have bought a number of items on ebay I think you should keep the following in mind: 1. pictures are important! ask for actual photos of the item in question. 2. write e-mails asking for the COMPLETE description of an item, assure you ask explicity if the item has any operating or cosmetic problems. 3. check the sellers feedback, I generally will not buy from anyone with less than a dozen feedbacks (all positive of course), you may miss and item but your risk is much lower if you can confirm previous satisfied customers. 4. consider escrow for big ticket items. the only weakness on ebay is your inability to touch and hear an item before hand, it is serious handicapo and one which must be taken seriously. The Ebay community is serious about discouraging sellers who lie through the negative feedback mechanism and banning crooked sellers but...caveat emptor, you must ask all pertinant questions to the seller...laslty beware of paying too much in the heat of bidding, know the price you should pay and do not go higher...regards and good luck, tony

I paid a little over $1,000 for my k-horns, about $500 for my Dynaco tube monoblocks and about $1,000 for electronics (cd/dac/preamp)...less than $3,000 all in for a system I love to listen to...true I am looking for tweaks, true if I were not all thumbs I might build a world beater DIY speaker with Audax drivers a la Polynatalia but I am sure I would keep the k-horns for the impact, the expansive, dynamic sound...Get a used k-horn, get the room right, maybe fill in below 50hz with a strong sub and I do not see how anyone can top the sound for $3-6k the whole system...regards, tony This message has been edited by sunnysal on 05-17-2001 at 02:15 PM

tblasing, go to http://www.audioclassics.com they have the C31V for less than a thousand, the others are all less than $1,500...this a reliable source, I have bought McIntosh equipment from them in the past, it is always as advertised! give it a look before giving up on the Macs! regards, tony

I found that Frank Van Alstine has some units with two outputs and tone controls for around $1k...the quesiton is has anyone heard his stuff? any good? lastly the Audio Research seems to be just the ticket but I cannot find any for sale anywhere...anyone have ideas? thanks, tony

oak?, oh well...when I meant EQ I meant parametric or possible something like the z-systems unit...where you can focus on those specific frequencies...that wouldn't help? regards, tony

james just to add fat to the fire, I might be able to "go halfsies" on a pair of belles with you...I havebeen looking for one birch ply belle to put between my k-horns...maybe we'll come across a pair sometime and split them up...meanwhile, glad to hear you're still in...get tone controls or, god forbid, an equalizer to bump the 50hz and and 80hz nulls and hold on...regards, tony

thanks JMON, I know it will difficult, a tubed preamp with tone controls and switchable outputs...but...that´s what I want...I suppose the tone controls would be optional in my mind on a warm, huge soundstage, detailed and dynamic tubed preamplifier! given that any ideas?...I cannot find current production C&J or BAT preamps with switchable outputs...maybe vintage? many McIntoshs seem to have that feature (AND Tone controls, even Loudness...but I think they are a little too antiseptic in sound, not too warm, but maybe they had a model way back that meets my needs...the 20 or 22?)...thanks, tony

sold my Creek passive to Randy Bey...then bought some cheapy sound values JFET unit...now I KNOW I need a decent tubed preamp...the creek was great in terms of transparency but I need two things from a preamp: 1. two switchable unbalanced outputs (output 1, output2, both) AND 2. tone controls...I also crave some tube warmth so...most units with these features really tend to dampen up the music, I hear less dynamics and certainly less transparency then I want...NOW...I would spring $1-2k for the perfect preamp but which one has features 1 and 2, has real warmth but also has great extension, dynamics and sounds utterly transparent? easy one huh? Obviously I have to go for a used unit since preamps with these types of descriptions seem to cost more tha $5k new...I see names like BAT and Conrad & Johnson mentioned as well as CAT and perhaps Joule-Electra...anyone have opinions? mabe look at vintage gear? (unfortunately a Marantz 7C is over $2k)...help! Tony

I have some RB-5s "reference series" klipshes and I have to tell you if you like the heritage series I do not think the reference series will do ya´ MTC but...Ebay has belles now and then for reasonable prices...regards, tony

First: Build false coner for my one floating K-horn...then... Second: A good tubed Preamp (I have been trying to find something in the sub $1k range, but without sucess so I will save up and see if there is something in the $2-3k range)....then... Third: a Sony SACD 777ES player Fourth(only if one does not get the Bass up to where I want it): a pair of HSU subs, or something that can keep up wiht the K-horns AND go down to the mid to low 20´s with DBs! Fifth: build out a HT system in my Family room...Klipshc based? not sure yet, I do have the RB-5s as a starting point... regards, tony

Watch out James! you just admitted to tone control usage!...I too bump up the bass (or...keep this between you and me...the loudness) on the k-horns...my midrange, yes brutally revealing but that´s why I moved to tubes...all in all still the perfect tony zorn speaker...dynamic, loud as ya want it, and lets face it...BIG!...someday I may have a second system with B&W 801s, my McIntosh SS amp and a SACD player for that "fine" listening experience...but for now...blissful in Salvador...Warm regards, tony

the wierd thing is this; the k-horns weak section for me is the bass...while dynamic and punchy, it does not go down past 50hz...the mids and highs are quite good however, especially considering the relatively cheap drivers used...I am sure that if we take TAD or high-end JBL mid and tweeter horns, combine them with some other bass section (maybe that Pi speaker bass folded horn cabinet) we can get a better speaker...BUT if we are not talking about building own own then the K-horn makes a terrific compromise accross the board...well maybe a few tweaks here and there...

I made the mistake of posting my system there a while back and got stupid comments as well...better yet, someone answered in some obscene manner using my name! so that was my last post there...regards, tony

randy steve d. has sold most of these seemingly to car decibel freaks...you can never tell from his comments whether this sub will perform as described...though it looks great! all the benefits of a low frequency horn, without the enormous size...I am just on the verge of having a local woodworker make the cabinet and source the drivers from madisound...I have to source an amp/x-over (what to get cheap? one of those generic flat plate jobs?) and then we I will inform you of the results...tony

Randy, I had similar doubts...the bass cab does not look like anything I have seen before, in scale or in throat/horn design...let´s wait and see how your friends turns out...I am still waiting (for the construction in my garden) until I can start to build the WO34 sub, whose plans I ordered a few months ago...
