  1. Easy, you make a point that I missed. I only spoke of expensive SS. Let me supplement: (1) Price being equal, there are some tubes that blow away very good SS; and (2) Price being equal, there are some SS's that blow away tubes. As a matter of fact, I am sure you can find bargains in both categories that, for less money, will outperform their counterparts.
  2. This is almost like CD vs. Vinyl. Many swear Vinyl is superior, yet many say "What are you talking about?" As is apparent, you have a good number of experienced people on both sides of the debate, repeating "yes it is,""no it's not," etc. I think the fact that this debate never ends is a testimony to the marginality of difference, if any. Plus, you have some folks pushing the idea that maybe their SS sounds as good as tubes because it's a particular brand - one of only the few that compete with tube quality. There are SO MANY diverse high-end brands of SS out there, such a statement cannot be remotely true. Hi-fi is very competitive and diverse. Here's my hypothesis: (1) Some tubes blow away very good SS; (2) Some SS's blow away very good tubes. If this were not the case and tubes were THE end in themselves, what do you think makers like McIntosh, Adcom, Denon (and all the other hi-fi names I can't think of) would be doing with their time and effort? If tubes were indeed so superior, I am quite sure their R&D/technicians would have told the boss that by now, and SS would have been abandoned a long time ago. And as far as any argument that SS is cheaper to produce (if this is true), that would have no bearing on high-end. When McIntosh builds a $5k SS amp, I am quite sure it would have gone w/tubes for the extra $200 or so if tubes were THE thing for people with $5k to blow on an amp. On the other hand, if SS was THE end in itself, what do you think NosValves would be doing with his time and effort? [] I just don't think with all the competition and diversity out there in equipment, anyone could give a categorical answer along these lines one way or the other. I will say this re: my experience: A tube pre-amp driving my SS Crown was a noticeable improvement. Sure, it was marginal, but it was noticeable. If it was that huge of a difference, I would have dumped by Yammy pre for a tube pre in a heartbeat. Not that I never will because I might. But the difference wasn't enough to make me run to the pawn shops. On the other hand, a Jolida tube CD player was not any better than my HK SS CD Player. Therein lies proof of my hypothesis, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
  3. I don't see any point in worrying who might think what or do what. What's done was done. And Audible's right. Plus, if a person worries that his/her spouse might have an affair, it is worry that is well-wasted IMO. No amount of worry can keep a person loyal, so why bother with worrying? My attitude is to chalk up whatever you learn like this in terms of "big deal." Or like Audible says, "whatever that dude had, it must not be what I've got." I say this to anybody: "Worrying that a spouse might get swept off his/her feet into some fling or worse, yet, a new romance, is not worth worrying about, because worry won't prevent it." So, have fun and stop worrying. You never know, that "dude" could turn out to be a rather important client down the road. Hell, yeah, I'd take his money.... []
  4. You mean you haven't noticed? I start out being a dumba$$, and it takes half the time before we can all figure out something as basic as "I have Type D KHorns." [] But I don't do it on purpose. I really am one - until someone straightens me out. And then, of course, unconventional applications (like Burlap for grills) seem to raise an eyebrow here and there. Why, I'll never know. Well it could be worse you could be your avatar [] ..... But then, I'd have to change my name, and m00n has already been taken! [] Duh. I missed it. I'm thinking dumba$$, and you're thinking "Blowhard." Now that you mention him, where's he been?
  5. Tell that to Louie Belson! Ah! You know of Louie Bellson. I saw the VHS version of Cobham vs. Bellson not too long ago. Bellson makes it look so easy!

  7. HDBR, seeing as you're a cabinet guy, can't you just imagine the endless custom pizzaz that could be done with the front of the KHorn bass bin? That's one nice, big, flat surface where the decorator's possibilities are almost endless.
  8. HDBR, very interesting read. I suppose it fits in well with the story on the LaScalas and Belles. I would never have guessed this about Cornwalls, though. That's what's interesting. Sounds like Klipsch started with the intent to make speakers for large rooms/auditoriums/outdoor gatherings, but people kept bringing them home. That, if true, would go in line with the concept that all these other models were really only intended as supplements to KHorns.
  9. They didn't use kick drums back then. The kick drum was all for show. []
  10. OTOH, I bet they'd look better if the front was not quarter-joined pieces. But they are definitely pretty enough that I would have bought them if I didn't already have mine and the price was right.
  11. Ditto on the question. Born2RockU had a lot of noise in his when he took his Power Conditioner out of the line. Although I don't have the noise issue and know nothing about Power Conditioners, I did get to see one in action, and it really did work.

  13. Does it affect the sound? Hmmmmm..... I'd call it the "Poor Man's" way to get sound like Dean's Super AA's. [] Just kidding. I listened to a bunch of songs after I put it on and couldn't tell any difference. I'm not saying nobody could possibly tell. I just didn't give it a moment's worry, and when I checked, everything sounded fine. I'd say this for anyone scared to use this for a re-grill because of sound issues only. At $2.99 a yard, go buy a yard and cover the top bin and see what you think. If you don't like it, take it off. Oh, yeah. About the look. Maybe in the pics it might be hard to tell, but they don't look like cloth in the sense of the cloth like you'd use to sew a shirt. These are (like someone said) "potato sacks." They have little pin holes. It's a rough weave. As I think about it, you can see it better on the picture of my Cornwall on the custom stand. That, too, is Burlap, except a lighter color. It wasn't my idea to use Burlap. The previous owner used it on my Corns. Looks like the Cane grills - and that's what I thought it was when everyone said "Cane" this and that on the forum.
  14. Plus a few hours to putty all those little staple holes and dents. Plus some added elbow grease to sand and apply stain and a few coats of poly. Fun, fun, fun.... Maybe down the road.... Just trying to bump past the pics to get to a new page.... BTW: What do you think of those black potato sacks for $2.99/yard?

  16. By the way, my Corns were raw Birch decos that were stained - as luck would have it - practically the exact same color as my KHorns. The Birch on the Corns is very, very nice, too! Word of reassurance as to your LaScalas - I just don't think Klipsch used crappy wood. As became apparent to me earlier, the color of stain seems to make all the difference. Your LaScalas will be real beauties with the right stain color, IMO.
  17. Thanks. Are you referring to the "smudge" that runs up the middle a little ways? If so, the pic just doesn't do justice. I think the flash makes the wood grain disperse all the light and make it look alot darker than it is. It looks perfectly normal in ordinary light. I'll try a pic when the sun is out (???). Under the grills of the Corns, they are raw birch. I took of the grill on the other one (since it was shredded by my cat anyway). Could be made to be pretty, but a concern is all those staple holes that were left where the cloth was attached beneath the trim. Folks here have re-assured me they've patched the tiny holes with wood filler very successfully before a new application of stain. Funny! As I quote you, your edit pops up in my editor window. Talk about real time.... As to the ports, there's no issue with sound that I ever recognized, but I'm deaf. Finally, yep, it would be a bad idea to go push on one of them pretty hard. Other than that, the stands are very sturdy - especially on a harder floor than carpet. I bolted the two plates to the pedestals with large lag bolts - very large - and then used wood glue, also.
  18. All said and done, that black Burlap makes a pretty nice grill cloth - eh? Not bad for $2.99 a yard compared to (I believe someone said) $40.00 a yard for "real" grill gloth. [] With 4 yards, I re-grill both speakers for $11.96 + tax. I guess "real" grill cloth would run me about $160.00. Not bad for black potato sacks. []
  19. And for the Deco Corns w/custom stands I built. Yep, the previous owner put grills on them and trimmed them out.
  20. BTW, those are only pics of the right speaker. The left is a total beater. []
  21. Paul was kind enough to upload all the DFH materials in one package. I haven't read it. I have been quite pre-occupied with everything else. But Paul, I WILL get to it. And thanks so much.
  22. Uno mas! Notice I grilled the side of the bottom plate of the top bin? I kind of had to, but it looks cool, I think. Please ignore the dingy wall and baseboard. I haven't reached this room for the remodel, yet.
  23. Here you go. My beauties - the work in progress that they are:
  24. don't forget the Vaseline, too, Jeff ....[] Duke, I didn't hear you ask if you could come over.... [] Whaaa ...ya wanna play Twister, or something ...???....[] Noooooooo ...... Duke, I love you, man! That was my last laugh before I go home and get to work on my grills. [] See ya!
