  1. Not that bad. The mesh is attached to a frame behind the ribbed grill front with the Mc badge. The ribs appear to be a hard plastic material. Took it apart while refinishing. Never had the EQ! Sounded fine without it but then I never heard them with EQ. Am I missing much?
  2. I may be guilty of that if it means I would prefer to play a "good" recording of any kind of music rather than inferior recording for the sake of variety, especially in the presence of company. Even a great system will not make a poor recording sound "pleasing". I think it was Mallette who said it is all about the source. I'll have to agree. A system that sounds good with all kinds of music.....hmmm. Raises the old question of what we find aurally pleasing versus a faithful reproduction of source material. Most likely not the same animal.
  3. Good analogy. The cars that excited us early on and the audio gear we all lusted for but could not afford. A walk down memory lane for sure. I recall a few model numbers all the years later including the KLH 7,8, 23, and the smaller 32. Your JBLs (100s?), supposedly the "west coast" sound and the Advents, the east coast equivalent were very desireable. My first speaker system was a pair of Nova 8s from RS, pretty but unremarkable sound, followed by the McIntosh ML-1C I traveled to Chapel Hill to hear. I had those vintage (71) speakers reconed and recoiled back in 2006 and refinished the cabinets at Bluesboys shop in 2006. I drive them with a vintage 62 HK tubed reciever as a second system. A bit of trivia most of you know..........JBL were the initials for James B. Lansing (Altec Lansing fame), who along with Henry Kloss, and Julian Hirsch founded the KLH company. Hirsch was in business with Houck who started the Hirsch-Houck Labs. I'll post a picture of the near mint ML-1Cs when I find the "post a picture link".
  4. Not a bad looking little amp. If all is in good shape I don't see doing much better for $300. The Advents (large and small) certainly had a following years ago. After listening to horns day in and out it is a nice break to listen to some bass reflex speakers, in my case McIntosh ML-1C. This would make a good thread. Design a bargain system from what is currently for sale on ebay, Garage, and Audiogon.
  5. I would be interested in how you would spend that few hundred dollars. What would your "bargain" system look like? Still enjoying my BB Extreme btw.
  6. Hey back Steve and Boxx....great to be able to chat with you guys again. Have you heard from Winchester? Where is Ace?
  7. Okay Ben warned you......I'm back! Much water under the bridge since my last post.....too much to go into here. Guess it's time for me to buy a round or two so you guys belly up to the bar. I'll have a Jack black with two cubes of ice. Cheers! PS......Thanks to Amy for diagnosing the login problem (internet explorer 10 compatability) and to Ben for his kind assisst.
  8. Never stopped you before Jeff[] To my virtual bar buds.............have a great holiday!
  9. out to the much neglected music room where there sits a HK tubed receiver, HK tubed amp, Benjamin Miracord turntable, and a Quicksilver preamp all unplugged and not being used. I need more equipment like Dtel needs bigger speakers![]
  10. Sorry Ben and I am in the same situation. Down sized after 19 years with the same company. We were at 26 employees in our hay day but now down to nine. Gotta love this economy! Guess I will cruise into retirement a little early. Cheers gentlemen!
  11. How does eating bread help when a hurricane is coming?
  12. I have a Nitty Gritty record vac but no fluid. I also understand that the shellac on 78 may cause damage with record cleanerss. Any further thoughts?
  13. I have inherited a large LP collection and need to start cleaning some of them. I am thinking about making my own cleaning solution and have just ordered two bottles of 99% pure isoprophyl alcohol from my pharmacy. I plan to mix the alcohol with triple distilled water (if I can find some) at one part alcohol to four parts water. I will then add a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid to the mixture. Any comments or suggestions? Second question, I have many 78 LPs, maybe 22 albums containing 11 records each. Is there much interest or value in these? They appear to be very well maintained. I also inherited an old Benjamin Miracord Elac turntable in very nice condition that plays 78s! Can I use the above described record cleaning solution on the 78s? Thanks for your comments.
  14. Very nice Boxx.....great job. Can't wait till opening day!
  15. I guess I need to rescue our watering hole from neglect here on a usually busy Friday afternoon. So whats up bar mates? I haven't been here or anywhere else on the forum for that matter in awhile. That is about to change as I will need some "expert" advice on a large music collection and some equipment that is now in my possession. Thats all for now about me......What is new with you? Put the next round on my tab gents. Cheers!
  16. Yes Steve it seems the bar thins out in the summer months but I look forward to a rowdy crowd here in the fall. Cheers!
  17. Thanks Ben....that guy has serious skills. Hope all my bar mates are well.
  18. Welcome back Winchester! I agree with Ben....Boxx is doing a bang up job on the bar. Next round is on me gentlemen.
