  1. Or a System 6 Based upon the Klipsch SB 1 as I remember. Still more than $ 500 but more potential than Promedia.
  2. I swithed a year ago from Kimber Toslink to Audio Quest between my CD player and MSB Dac. I was pretty sure the bass was firmer, mids fuller and highs a little less "tinny"(jitterry?). Allot has changed since then I should go back and listen again. Supposedly the AT&T connection is more robust than Toslink for optical signals. Toslink always seemed to be a bit of a flimsy connection; could you get more jitter if the optical signal is trnasferred to a cable that is lined up off the center line of the inside diameter of the connector on the source transport. There has to be some error generated at the cable and component interface. Is it significant I am not sure. I understand electronics very little; light transmission far less than that.
  3. Mdeneen, Sounded like it was close. I think we may get out there for 4-6 days the end of July or early August. We like our lakes in Michigan but the climate in your neck of the woods is so pleasant. ----------------- Resonsible kids that show up to work around here make $ 7-9 per hour; minimum wage adjusts up due to the value the employee brings. -------------- Another of my brain farts(reality deviations) in line with standard of living is to keep our dollars with counties with similar ethical basis. I do not want to buy oil from people that hate us and the proceeeds can be diverted to terrorist organizations. Or cheap imports from China that were made with slave labor and have poor quality. Some reports indicate the Athabasca tar sands in Canada have more oil than the middle east, I have not read an update in a couple of years. It is supposed to be only financially feasible to extract at $ 40-45 per barrel. Western hemishere economies could adjust to higher gas prices(they would still be lower than Europe)and let the restricted money flow dry up the adverserial governments in the middle east and elsewhere. Dependency on fossil fuels(non renewable resource) will come to a head eventually. And there was the story about the recently discovered bacteria in an Idaho hot spring that converts hydrogen to methane. Certainly a unique life form that may influence the energy policies in generations to come.
  4. I only have one disk from mobile fidelity; Neil Young "Old Ways". It sounds only a little bit better than the Mark Knoffler "Sailing to Philidelphia" I am listening to this morning. Mark does a duet on one song with James Taylor; an interesting contrast in voices. You can just about get 3 Mapleshades Cds for the price of a Mobile Fidelity or even 4-5 NAXOS classical CDs. MF filled a niche; the big record labels only care if a CD plays in a persons car or boom box.
  5. Ear, Right on! I trade off between haggling for a few percent and paying retail at shops I like. As noted before, Almas HIFI in Michigan is really sharp for Klipsch demos. I would love to work there when I retire from selling plastics.
  6. EMI jazz(Keith Jarret and Dave Holland Quintet), Blue Note(Patricia Barber) and Mapleshades master some CDs that are in a different class as well. CDs never needed to sound so hastily made and compressed. Eric Clapton and BB King recent collaboration is pretty sharp. Sonny Rollins "Saxaphone Collossus" recorded in 1956 by Rudy Van Gelder was reissued in 1999 using the JVC 20 bit K2 super coding process. It sounds damn near vinyl to me! Good rematered music to try.
  7. mdeneen, My wife would like to burn some of my frequent flyer miles this summer since we have not been away from the kides for more than 36 hours in 3 years. She likes the northern California weather and geography. She really liked the time I took her to Calistoga. Where is Hearaldsburg? I pay college kids $10 an hour or more to help with house chores business travel precludes me from doing during the week. I hire licensed tradesmen at scale for the more sofisticated tasks. Never have had concerns about quality. Floor guy who put in my kitchen floor last June would not start installation of the new floor untill he had fixed all of the squeaks in the joists of my 47 year old house. Citizens of developing countries have difficulties understanding the productivity and work ethic in the U.S. There are always exceptions but you cannot beat good old USA GNP and currency stability.
  8. Couple of brief updates... 1. Prologic sounds better than the old receiver. 2. PBS is my best over air channel and the picture quality remains awsome. 3. Still have not bought and installed the new dish and switch to get all the Hi Def channels from Dish Network. 4. James Bond on ABC HDTV tonight and last Saturday look awsome. Roger Moore though. 5. NCAA basketball looked pretty good. 6. I am researching outdoor antennas. The more things change the more they remain the same. A roof antenna; I would have never beleived 5 years ago.
  9. My homemade Heresey clone experiement was with .75 inch thick birch plywood. I do not use them right now they are used for backyard parties. Pretty solid construction and the wood is nice to look at.
  10. Boa, What pre pros are you considering. certainly not something you would do just for PLII? I really like the deal I got on my Sherwood Newcastle demo Spearates I bought last fall; but the preamp is quite outdated although it sounds really nice.
  11. I had a buddy of mine who lives in the "Woods" next door to you buy the Outlaw on my recommedantion. His speakers are junk but he was very impressed by the build and service associated with Outlaw. Good luck Rick
  12. I was at Sams buying food today; with 4 kids they eat a bunch. Some of the funds I invest in surely have Walmart. No one could have predicted K Mart and Sears ill condition 15 years ago everthing goes in cycles. Walmart will suffer eventually they will run out of suppliers to take advantage of like Sears did. I buy as much as possible from specialty stores bagels, HDTV, speakers and the like. I am concerned the securities and exchange commission aproves everything proposed in mergers. For plastic mold filling analysis on computers( CAE) there were 2 major players C mold and Mold flow Austrailia. They were allowed to merge. They were the 2 top companies in the market; it makes no sense. NAFTA I feel encourages Mexicans to stay at home to work; instead of sneaking into our welfare system in the states. I would rather keep dollars in our hemisphere. Mexico, Central and South America have allot of work to do but we have some things in common. Judeo Christian values, democracies and others. I hate to spend a nickle if it goes to China. Just bought some made in the USA RED Wing shoes last week; they will last longer than 3 pairs made in China. I have issues with NIKE as well; all that money they pay to Tiger Woods and MJ make me ill.
  13. Thanks Mike I should have that RP 91 unit sometime next week. Could be a good idea to sneak the ICBM in the house sometime late summer.
  14. You can always chase a new format or surround function like PLII. I recently got a Model 6000 Dish Network receiver and I think the Pro Logic sounds better than the old satleite receiver. Source material is important. My S VHS sounds real good but picture is not even close to DVD. I like DTS the best followed by DD 5.1. I personally would use PLII very little; I watch DVDs and can get DD 5.1 from my sattelite.
  15. Mike, Can you get by without the ICBM for a little while? I invested in the HDTV technology this month and needed about $ 300 of additional components that I really did not plan for. My wife is going to kill me if I sneak the ICBM into the system. I got the RP 91 from a mom and pop brick and mortar place that has really good service in the western suburbs of Detroit called Walters Home Appliance for $ 480. I will continue to use my cd changer and MSB Link to play cds through.
  16. I am not clear on your question, it is a little late. You really need 6 channel analog in on a pre amp or receiver. Then the bass management is still non existent on most pre amps and receivers. To accomplish DVD Audio with maximum adjustibility it just is not cheap.
  17. Now it may be a little unsafe to be listening to any Klipsch at 250 watts. Unsafe for your longevity of your ears. Maybe in an industrial aaaplication in a club or auditorium. It would have been great to have Klipsch in my high school auditorium in 1977. OOh Baby!
  18. I live a double life one in analog 2 channel and one in HT. I have been a 2 channel lover as long as I rememeber, but the technology of HT, sattelite and HDTV is a great hobby I have pursued for the past 6 years. Through the conveneience of 12 month 0 % financing I decided to go for it. Just paid wifes car off. Toshiba 36 inch direct view HDTV, Panasonic RP 91 and the Dish 6000. The Dish receiver 6000 I also loaded with the "8VSB" card wich allows one to access local over the air HDTV broadcasts. I watched some PBS and "The Practice" today; it is real strange to get DD and an awesome picture over the air with a simple $40 Radio Shack indoor powered antenna. My wife got to pick out the TV and she really liked the Toshiba. I am sure most 36 inch direct view TV s are very pleasing compared to any analog TV one has become accustomed to. It will be another 10 days to get the other dish installed on my roof and the very expensive "64 switch"(delivered for $ 160, the "8VSB" card was only $140); which allows one to automatically switch to the satellites that carry the HDTV channels. Set up was a little clumsy but the sound(optical DD) and picture quality are at least equiviliant to the best THX certified DVDs I have watched. If posters are interested, I will write some periodic updates on my experiences; I find HDTV to be an interesting developing technology.
  19. I ordered the Panasonic RP 91 on Friday. I do not have 6 of the same type interconnect for this unit to go analog for the DVD Audio to my preamp. Audio Advisor has a sale on MIT MITerminator 4 or 5 interconnect. MIT 4 $ 38 per pair 1 meter MIT 5 $ 25 per pair 1 meter I have tried Audio Quest, Esoterec and Radio Shack. Anyone have a satisfying experience with these MIT interconnects?
  20. Based upon Mike and John having success with the Panasonic RP 91, I took a longer look. Read allot of reviews. I think it has the Gensies chip but Panasonic has worked out the Chroma Bug issue through design somehow. I do not beleive they have implemented the Sage chip in this model. Then the RP 91 received a class 3 recommendation from "The Perfect Vision" in the issue I received on Saturday in the mail. I will order it tommorrow from my favorite mom and pop appliance store. Thanks to everyone for the thoughts! Rick
  21. Punisher, Relax...I started my system in 1976 at the age of 16. Only used Klipsch in bands i was doing sound for. I think I got my first pair; a pair of KSB 3.1s in 1994. Then upgraded to RB5s. C7 or RC3 are really a big step up from the SC1 when youi can do it.
  22. Sony does not. They, along with Phillips support their in house developed SACD format. DVD A seems to be a multi channel format from its inception. SACD was 2 channel only at the beginning. The two competing formats allow for better quality than CD. Folks will probably argue which format is better for better part of this decade.
  23. Any new products would be very unlikely to contain FREON; it is kind of a controlled substance. It dissapates in gas form quite quickly when exposed to the atmosphere. It was used for cleaning automotive fuel injectors subsequent to their manufacure. I beleive its use in this process was discininued 6-8 years ago.
  24. I hope someone way more electically astute than I can comment on this one. I have to readit a bunch of times. "sotochastic"(?) phase distortion? WOW
